As the Chair of Creative & Cultural Skills and COO of Live Nation I am passionate about getting talented young people into the creative and cultural industries. Live Nation is the largest live entertainment company and a major employer in the music industry. We need talented people entering the industry at all levels – from entry roles to management - and education and training has a vital role to play in this. This is why I think that the Music Education Directory is so important. It provides a reference that will help young people during the difficult process of deciding where to go and what to study.

This is also why I support UK Music’s Music Academic Partnership (MAP) and CC Skills’ own National Skills Academy. This directory has been produced to allow anyone seeking a music course in the UK to locate, compare and contact education centres running those courses in their region.

The database is split first regionally (London, South of England, Central England, North of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and then within each separate region it is divided by subject area (music business and cultural theory, music performance and composition, music technology and production). Finally within each of these subject areas the information is split by level (Higher Education – degree level, Further Education – college qualifications, training courses).

The information provided allows the user to link directly to the establishment websites and contact addresses for the courses they believe to be the most relevant to their career aspirations. The user is advised to ask relevant questions of the education provider including:-

What music facilities do they have?What industry experience and qualifications do the staff team possess?

What are the placement opportunities?What are the international opportunities?What percentage of former students are now working professionally in music?What type of employment are they engaged in?What will the course cost?

Additionally we would advise all prospective students to visit several establishments in order to view and compare facilities, meet the staff team and gain an understanding of the content and direction of the teaching programme. In this way you will gain a clearer picture of what each course can offer and make an informed choice.

Undertaking a music education programme could give you a significantly better start in the professional environment. However, it may take many years and incur significant cost. How toUse the MED

Each entry consists of three columns. The first shows the institution and the main web address. The second shows the subject and the qualification. The third contains the direct contact details when available for the course or a general contact. E-mails and phone numbers are provided in as many as possible. Where appropriate each entry will have the logo of any industry links. These are explained in more detail below.

• British Academy of Songwriters, Composer and Authors (BASCA): One of BASCA’s four main aims and objectives is “to foster a sense of community amongst British songwriters, lyricists and composers and to encourage the next generation of professional music writers”. With this in mind, they created the BASCA Academic Supporter Programme with the following main aims

i. To build closer ties with British Music Educational Institutions.ii. To educate students on the working of the Music Industry.iii. To inform on current affairs affecting songwriters, composers and lyricists.Iv. To share knowledge and experiences from our established writer members.

• Joint Audio Media Education Support (JAMES): JAMES is a consortium of music and entertainment industry organisations collaborating in the support of education and promotion of excellence. The JAMES accreditation scheme indicates that college and university courses will satisfy the demands and expectations of UK & International employers in the Music and Entertainment Industries.

• British Phonographic Industry (BPI): The BPI represents the UK’s recorded music industry. Membership of the BPI allows institutions access to the expertise of the BPI and a range of training, education and information seminars.

• Music Academic Partnership (MAP), UK Music: MAP is a ground-breaking collaboration between a select group of educational institutions and the membership of UK Music. MAP members have direct contact with the highest levels of the music industry through UK Music’s members and also access to a range of benefits such as top-level Production Day experiences for students, working with BBC Introducing and expert careers contacts in the industry.

• Creative & Cultural Skills (CC Skills), National Skills Academy (NSA): The National Skills Academy network of education partners delivers programmes designed to improve the provision of skills and training in the creative and cultural industries.
