He is author of Music Law in the Digital Age and a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Texas.

How Digital Changed Licensing and the Economics of Copyright  As distribution methods for music develop and evolve, copyright law has remained fairly constant.   However, consumption of music and the licensing process have been completely altered as technology has enabled micro-payments and real-time tracking.   Meanwhile, major catalogues have been removed from PRO's and some labels have been able to negotiate terrestrial performance rights for sound recordings through larger digital deals.  This discussion will reveal the ways new business models for music have changed royalty rate structures, licensing, and payments for music, and the underlying economic impact.

Market ing Music ians for the Video Streaming AgeThe new music industry has yielded yet another medium to share, market, and sell music: live video streaming. Often called webcasting, online concerts, music cams, and other buzzwords; live video streaming is a powerful yet different medium to master. No longer do YouTube style music videos work “live,” nor does it make sense to just flip on a webcam while performing at a club or café. Frank Podlaha, CEO and Founder of StreetJelly[dot]com, talks to the challenges and successes musicians face building a community of fans, marketing their personal brand, and ultimately selling their music through live online performances.
