MUSIC NOTES

The organ piece before High Mass today is Pièce Héroïque by César Frank (1822-1890). Franck was one of the 19 th century ’s most inf luential organist -composers . His most famous composit ion is his orchestral symphony in D minor . Franck composed for the great organ at the Basi l ica of St . Clot i lde in Paris . This organ was bui lt by Arist ide Cavai l l é-Col l (1811-1899). Cavai l l é-Coll designed organs in a symphonic manner , s imilar to a symphony orchestra . He expanded the types of sounds and express ive capabil i t ies of the organ. Inspired by the organ at St . Clot i lde, Pièce Héroïque is a dramat ic piece in three main sect ions. The f irst sect ion announces the main themes. The mi ddle sect ion is tranqui l and melodious, but the st i l lness is occasional ly interrupted by the pedals immitat ing batt le sounds. The f inal sect ion of the piece features a dramat ic crescendo, culminat ing in tr iumphant chords in B Major. At High Mass, St . Dunstan ’s Choir wil l s ing the Kyrie and Agnus Dei Ste l l ifer i conditor orbis . This p lainsong mass comes from the Graduale Romanum. The Graduale Romanum was compiled by the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France, a result of the growing interest in chant from the 19th century. - J o s eph Arndt , D ir e c t or o f Mus i c

Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

T H E L I T U R G Y O F T H E W O R D

First Reading—Jeremiah 14: 7-10, 19-22 Although our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for your name's sake; our apostasies indeed are many, and we have sinned against you. O hope of Israel,

its savior in time of trouble, why should you be like a stranger in the land, like a traveler turning aside for the night? Why should you be like someone confused,

like a mighty warrior who cannot give help? Yet you, O LORD, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; do not forsake us! Thus says the LORD concerning this people: Truly they have loved to wander, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the LORD does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins. Have you completely rejected Judah? Does your heart loathe Zion? Why have you struck us down so that there is no healing for us? We look for peace, but find no good; for a time of healing, but there is terror instead. We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, the iniquity of our ancestors,

for we have sinned against you. Do not spurn us, for your name's sake; do not dishonor your glorious throne; remember and do not break your covenant with us. Can any idols of the nations bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers?

Is it not you, O LORD our God? We set our hope on you, for it is you who do all this.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

VczzzzxecxxzzyczztcxyczzucxzrcxxxYcxxzTmcecxxrcxxxtczxREzzzzzz/

How dear to me is your dwell-ing, O Lord of Hosts! How dear to me is your dwelling, O LORD of hosts! My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; by the side of your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. All repeat refrain

Happy are they who dwell in your house! They will always be praising you. Happy are the people whose strength is in you! Whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way. All repeat refrain

Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, for the

early rains have covered it with pools of water. They will climb from height to

height, and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion. All repeat refrain

Second Reading—II Timothy 4: 6-8, 16-18 I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defense no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Vzzzzzzzzzzzzzz6zvvvcczdrvczzzYzzzzzzzzz/ People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Prayers of the People—Form IV

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.

Here and after each petition is sung

VzzzzyvrvyvtzvRv/vvrvztvzzzYvzzz/ Lord, in your mer-cy, Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be

fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal

kingdom.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

Confession of Sin

Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day, and beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you and glorify your Name as we sing,

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues

We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.

Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. A M E N .

BRITTEN 100 AT GRACE CHURCH

The concert series continues on Sunday, November 10 at 4:00 P.M. with a performance celebrating 100 th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). Britten was one of the 20 th century’s greatest composers. In addition to his sacred music, he wrote for nearly every type of instrument, and he composed many famous operas. On November 10, our choirs will sing music of Britten with guest conductor Timothy Brown. And tenor Andy McCullough will perform some of Britten’s songs, accompanied by Joseph Arndt. Timothy Brown was for 30 years Director of Music at Clare College in Cambridge, England, where he succeeded famous composer John Rutter. Mr. Brown made numerous recordings with the Clare Choir, particularly on the Naxos label. Many parishioners may remember that he and the Clare Choir sang for Advent Lessons & Carols in December 2009. Mr. Brown is arguably one of the world’s greatest living choral conductors. Our parish community is very lucky to be hosting him.
