Colour Scheme

The colours purple, white and black have been used repeatedly to make the magazine cover more coherent and cohesive. The use of three main colours helps create unity in the magazine

This cover of Q magazine follows the conventions of a magazine. The only unconventional attribute to this cover is that the title Q acts more like a logo as opposed to main title which usually stretches across the page creating a clear masthead.

The kickers have explanatory text and is in the left third of the page, the eye flow is very obvious. This cover has an informal and indirect mode of address. The colour scheme is Red, white, black and yellow. The barcode is also situated in the bottom right hand corner. This is all very generic of a music magazine.

Fused magazine takes an unconventional approach in their front covers. Although the main conventions are there (cover lines, model credits and sans serif title) the way in which is laid

out differs from the norm .

The main image is illustrated on a digital painting software which already plays up on the conventions of a regular music magazine cover. The cover lines are either “painted on” (with the main image)

or laid out as text on the page that fills up the negative space. The magazine also has a white border (gutter) around the page which makes the main image stand out more. The magazine name is written in a plain sans serif font which follows convention as well as ensuring that the main image isn’t overpowered. The magazine cover on the right is of Q magazine. This shows the difference in style. Q magazine follows very clear conventions, the eye flow is more obviously applied (although it is apparent in both magazines), the main cover line is obvious and striking, there is a barcode and there is also a kicker and an explanatory text as opposed to just having cover lines in the kicker

What I will use in my magazineThrough analyzing both Fused and Q magazine, I have chosen to try and reach a happy medium between both magazines. Where I want the edginess and style of Fused, I

also want the functionality of Q .

I have decided that I will use a very similar style in my main image as to make my magazine a bit more unconventional. However I will stick to general rules such as a cover with explanatory text and that being in the left third of the page. I will also put a barcode in my front

cover as well .

I would also like an informal and indirect mode of address in my magazine as this will follow convention. An indirect mode of address means articles on fashion,

gig listings and band reviews .
