Who Reads Music Magazines?
• I think that people who read music magazines are most
likely people that are very interested in a particular type of
music. There are different types of music magazines,
rock, dance, classical etc. A persons interests and music
taste will influence which genre of magazine they read, for
example, ‘moshers’ will stereotypically read rock music
magazines, and will have certain expectations of the
magazine. People may read a magazine due to a well
known or liked artist being in it. Musicians may read
magazines, as they are very interested in music.
Why Do People Read Music Magazines?
• There are many reasons people read music magazines.
They may be interested in a particular artist starring in the
magazine and want to find out more information about
them. They may be new to the genre and want to find out
more about the style, music, the stereotypical conventions
of that genre.
• Blulmer and Katz uses and gratifications theory has many
reasons why people may read music magazines…
Blulmer & Katz : Uses and Gratifications

How Genre is Represented
As you can see from the last slide, genres are represented in different ways; the conventions of the magazine depend on the target audiences expectations, taste, demographics etc. For Example.
This magazine ‘mixmag’ is a dance music
magazine. The bright, lumionous colours
are stereotypical of a dance music mag-
azine. It’s target audience is young peo-
ple, into partying and music. The well
known ‘party island’ Ibiza is mentioned,
another convention of dance music, as a
lot of the music comes/is played there.
