  • 1. AS MEDIAMUSIC MAGAZINE EVALUATION

2. When I was creating my music magazine Boombox, the firstthing I did was research into different music magazine in orderto understand the layout and house style of the magazine. Thishelped me recognize and understand the conventions of themusic magazine, what and where everything is supposed to beplaced. I have looked into Q music magazine as it is one of themost known and popular between all ages, also the genre isappealing to my audience too.One of the main features is the bold titles allmagazines use. The titles are positioned on the topof the page and can be placed underneath thecentral image or on top. The more knownmagazines usually place the title underneath thecentral image as the magazine is widely knownalready, when the magazine is recent, the titleusually is on top of the central image, of course thetitle can be used both ways either way. My centralimage was placed in the center of the page asevery popular magazine does; the model on themagazine is also using a direct mode of address, which creates a more personal approach with theaudience. A lot of magazines use more images ontheir front cover. I found this to be unnecessary as Iwanted my magazine to be tidy, otherwise it wouldlook messy and confusing. I have looked atmagazines such as Q and tried to follow theconventions, layout and font style of this magazine. 3. I placed my cover story on the top right and used shortone-liner so it doesnt give out too much information sothe reader doesnt lose the interest. This one-liner iscatchy which will lure the reader in to read the article. Most magazines have a colour theme which makes themagazine look organised, the colours vary from 2 to 4different colours, which are used through the housestyle in the magazine. I have used 3 different colours;white, black, dark pink. I also have used buzz wordssuch as EXCLUSIVE which catches readers attention, many magazines uses that and also such as a + signand a list of artists which makes the reader think thatthey are getting more of their money worth. Thecontents page has been divided into two Features andRegulars. I chose to do it this way because it helps thereader to navigate through the pages in the magazine ina easier way and to also navigate through the contentspage itself. It makes the contents page look moreorganised and professional. 4. The target audience for my magazine are female teenagers and young adults of ages13-18. I chose this certain age because I believe this age range of people buymagazines most often than people out of this age range. The genre of music mymagazine is about is Vintage/POP which is known worldwide and is very popular evenbetween older generations. My article and front cover features a new sensation in themusical industry. She is 17 years old and has become known worldwide in only few yearstime. Her name is Amelia and she doesnt have a stage name which makes the audiencefeel that she is truthful to herself and people around her. Amelia also is a teenager whichthe readers can relate to and look up to. In the article, Amelia answers question relatedto how she made it to where she is now, and answer some questions related to how shedeals with the fame in her everyday life, and she tells the reader how the success mightaffect someones life.Amelia tells even the most personal things in thisinterview which makes the audience feel close to herand helps the audience to understand her better asshe is sincere and honest as she answers thequestions for the readers to relate to her as they maybe in the same situation as she once was. Thisconcludes that she cares about her readers and is notstar struck like some of the other artists. She is like aninspiration to the readers because she herself saysthat she never thought she will become someone sheis now, this encourages the readers to follow theirgoals in life and try their best to achieve them nomatter what. My magazine does not represent anyracial groups as it is a Vintage/POP music magazine, everyone knows it and enjoys it. There are also a lot ofartists in POP from different racial groups. 5. There are two media institutions in particular that could distribute my music magazinebecause they both are worldwide known and have a very wide range of different magazinesthey distribute, whether it would be for men, women, about travel, sport, gardening, evencooking and of course music. These two institutions are IPC Media and Bauer Media.Choosing one of these, I would choose Bauer media because it claims to be very popularand worldwide, and the worlds largest privately owned publishing group. They offer 300different magazines all around 15 countries as well as radio and TV. Knowing that they alsooffer radio and TV I know that this institution is very well organised and seems to be veryprofessional towards what they do. Knowing that it also distributes a lot of differentmagazines of different age groups and genres, i chose it because my audience are femaleteenagers of ages 13-18 which isnt as wide. I believe BAEUR MEDIA, by distributing mymagazine, would attract a lot of attention to it even for its smaller target audience. 6. Regarding the technologies learnt from the process of constructing mymagazine, I have learnt to use a very wide range of different programs Ihave never used before. Programs such as Adobe Photoshop and illustratorCS3; these two programs, I have never used before, are now very easy tounderstand and use. Before I knew how to edit images on Photoshop, Iused a program called Picasa to edit my pictures, but now I know thatPhotoshop allowed me to do much more different range of things I neverknew existed, whether it may be effect wise or cropping wise. It has allowedme to cut out the model from the image leaving me with a clean finish of themodels body without any background. Now I know how to edit fonts on Photoshop too, whether it may be size orcolour. Photoshop allowed me to also change the transparency, saturation, contrast, hue, threshold balance, contrast and more.Illustrator has allowed me to create magazines, fliers and more torepresent my work and both of these programs also let me edit mywork any time instead or doing it all over again.Blogger has allowed me to publish my work online for other studentsto see and teachers to mark; it is a quicker and more efficient way ofrepresenting work instead of printing it out and wasting paper. Thesame goes with making questionnaires, instead of writing them andprinting them out, instead, I made online polls on Survey Monkey, forpeople to visit and complete. Survey monkey has allowed me to seethe amount of questions answered the percentage of answers and tounderstand what my audience thinks and wants in a very quick andeasy way. 7. Photography has allowed me to experience different shotsand picture angles, and let me express the style ofVintage/POP music through pictures. This making process ofmy magazine has allowed me to learn a lot of new thingsregarding editing programs and also let me show myphotography skills. To photograph my pictures I have used aprofessional Canon camera. 8. Looking back at the first drafts of mymagazine, I have realised that I have made alot of mistakes in the layout, house style andfont style of my magazine. My central imagewas far from the image in needed to show thestyle of Vintage/POP, it was very plain and notcreative at all. The font colours reminded of arock genre instead of Vintage/POP andlooked very rough and out of place. I alsoused other images on the front cover insteadof using one and making it look moreprofessional and tidy. This made the frontcover look messy; it seemed very confusingand didnt look good at all. Also the font stylewas different in almost every puff which madeit look unprofessional and untidy.Regarding the contents page, it was also verydifferent; the colour scheme was similaralthough the font style was different from theone on the front cover. The house style hasnot been carried out properly by using thesame font. In my final magazine I had madesure that the house style completely carrieson to all the magazine pages, including thefont, the colour scheme etc. I have alsochanged the colour completely as its morelikely to attract my targeted audience. 9. The article was a total disaster as the interview text was placed all over the pages in awrong order. Knowing that the interview is supposed to be placed in columns, it wasfar from that. The images were also placed in wrong places which didnt complete thelook of a double page article like in other magazines. The images were edited veryunprofessionally and with no taste. They didnt look good on the page. Now that Iknow all of the mistakes I did in the past I have made enormous changes to my work,Ive taken new images, decided on a proper house style and made sure to carry it onto the other pages so if the magazine pages were to be laid out, they would look likefrom the same magazine. This time I made sure the images I choose are appropriateto the magazine I am making.
