Dear Friends,

Greetings and welcome to our ninth season of music at christ & saint stephen’s. We are pleased to offer our special services and a variety of concerts performed by an exceptional group of

musicians.

The season begins with a vocal concert featuring gregory lorenz and sarah rose taylor. A tenor of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, Mr. Lorenz has performed operatic roles and solo concerts to great acclamation across the USA, Europe and Japan. Ms Taylor, was recently reviewed by The Boston Musical Intelligencer as [singing] with gorgeous shading and intensity ... whose clarity and focus brought the audience to rapt attention. This is a unique opportunity to hear some rarely performed English song cycles sung by two outstanding singers.

We are always pleased to host international touring choirs. This season we welcome st. salvator’s chapel choir from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. The choir performs repertoire that spans six centuries and includes many world premieres. The St. Andrew Citizen wrote of the choir: Both thrilling and yet meditative, energetic yet sensitive.

Returning to Christ & Saint Stephen’s after popular acclaim, Jerry willard, Classical Guitarist, has performed at Alice Tully & Carnegie Hall in New York City and has concertized extensively throughout Europe and the USA. The New York Times wrote: The recital was exemplary ... it was again the clarity of Mr. Willard’s playing that gave special pleasure.

The concert series concludes with our annual organ concert performed by BenJamin sheen. Mr. Sheen is one of the brightest young organists, having recently won the inaugural Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition. He is currently Assistant Organist at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City, and this will be a concert not to be missed!

These concerts are spread amongst the weekly Sunday morning services and our series of special services sung by our professional choir as outlined on page 4. One service of particular note is the solemn eucharist commemorating the centennial of world war i on October 19, directed by Guest Conductor, Paul Spicer. All services are free and open to the public.

Please consider supporting the friends of music for 2014-2015 with a tax deductible contribution. This enables us to continue offering these concerts and special services. All gifts are much appreciated.

We look forward to welcoming you to another season of wonderful music at christ & saint stephen’s.

With best wishes,

Nigel PottsOrganist & Choirmaster

the choir

The choir of christ & saint stephen’s consists of eight professional New York

singers. Although they all come with a wealth of choral experience for blend and liturgical empathy, the choir members also have active solo, oratorio, and/or operatic careers within the USA and Europe.

The choir sings the principal Sunday morning Choral Eucharist service (with reduced numbers during the summer), as well as extra services for the major feast days and other special services, such as Choral Evensong during the year. A wide range of repertoire is sung during the course of the liturgical season, from the late Medieval and Renaissance period, through the 20th Century to compositions of the present day, but with an emphasis on Tudor England and the great Anglican Choral tradition. The choir has commissioned music by prominent American composers such as Bruce Neswick and Robert Lehman, and has been directed by respected visiting conductors such as Brian Jones, Jared Johnson, as well as Paul Spicer from England.

the schoenstein & co. organ

The organ at Christ & Saint Stephen’s was designed and built by the San

Francisco company of Schoenstein & Co. in 2008.

The organ of 15 stops, is in the symphonic style, of which its concepts of maximum variety of tonal color and the widest possible dynamic range, creates an instrument not only of great beauty, but versatility. This symphonic style is ideal for the Anglican service, which demands the most intricate and sophisticated choral accompaniments, solid support of congregational singing, and a wealth of tonal variety for organ solo repertoire.

The façade pipes were decorated, (as in the Victorian period) to capture the color and design motifs of the church. The organ case and choir stalls was beautifully built by New Holland Church Furniture company.

Nigel Potts ~ Organist & Choirmaster

The anglican church music tradition has been an important and enduring part of

nigel potts’ life. He has held Cathedral and Church positions in New Zealand, England and the USA.

Born into a musical family, (his grandmother being a student of Herbert Howells), Nigel’s church music career began as an 8-year old chorister at Wellington Cathedral. He has held Organ Scholarships in English Cathedrals, and worked in London as a freelance organist playing services and recitals in Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and other churches.

A graduate of Yale University, Nigel was appointed Organist & Choirmaster of Christ & Saint Stephen’s in 2006, where he conducts the professional choir and directs the music at christ & saint stephen’s concert series. In 2008, he oversaw the installation of the new Schoenstein & Co. organ. An advocate of new music, Nigel is the dedicatee of several organ compositions and he has also commissioned choral music from prominent American and British composers. Nigel’s organ transcriptions are published by MorningStar Music.

As a Concert Organist, Nigel has performed recitals across four continents, including distinguished venues in London, Cambridge (UK), Paris, Toronto, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney, as well as in Austria, Iceland, Taiwan, New Zealand and the Bahamas.

Paul Jacobs ~ Artist in Residence

D escriBed by The Chicago Tribune as one of the most supremely gifted organists

of his generation, Grammy award-winning organist paul JacoBs unites technical skills of the first order with probing emotional artistry. His performances of new works and core recital and symphonic repertoire have transfixed audiences, colleagues and critics alike.

Paul made musical history at the age of 23 when he played J.S. Bach’s complete organ works in an 18-hour marathon performance on the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death. He has also performed the complete organ works of Olivier Messiaen in marathon performances throughout North America, and recently reached the milestone of having performed in each of the fifty United States. His recording of the Messiaen Livre du Saint Sacrement, released by Naxos in 2010, was awarded that year’s Best Solo Instrumental Grammy of the Year, the first time a disc of solo organ music has received this honor.

Paul joined the faculty of The Juilliard School in 2003, and was named chairman of the organ department in 2004, one of the youngest faculty appointees in the school’s history.

As Artist in Residence at Christ & Saint Stephen’s, Paul accompanies the choir for major services throughout the year, in addition to performing and lecturing on the concert series. In 2008, he gave the opening dedication recital of the new Schoenstein organ.
