The Whole Note
What is a whole note?• A whole note receives 4 beats (in 4/4 time).• In 4/4 time, 1 whole note takes up an entire measure.• A whole note looks like this:
The Half Note
What is a half note?• A half note receives 2 beats (in 4/4 time). This is half the number of beats in a whole note.• In 4/4 time, 2 half notes make up 1 measure.• A half note looks like this:
The Quarter Note
What is a quarter note?• A quarter note receives 1 beat (in 4/4 time). This is one quarter of the number of beats in a whole note.• In 4/4 time, 4 quarter notes make up 1 measure.• A quarter note looks like this:
The Eighth Note
What is an eighth note?• An eighth note receives 1/2 beat (in 4/4 time). This is one eighth of the number of beats in a whole note.• In 4/4 time, 8 eighth notes make up 1 measure.• An eighth note looks like this:
The Eighth Note
• Multiple eighth notes may be connected by a bar. However, their value doesn’t change. Each eighth note is still worth ½ beat!
How The Notes Relate
=
=
=1 whole note…
…equals 2 half notes…
…which equals 4 quarter notes……which also equals 8 eighth notes!
Each of these groups of notes equals 4 beats!
Dotted Notes
If a note has a dot behind it, it is called a dotted note. A dot increases the value of the note it is attached to by half of the value of that note.
Dotted Notes
For example, if there is a dot behind a half note, it is a dotted half note. The value of the note increases by half the value of the original note. Since a regular half note is equal to 2 beats, a dotted half note extends the value of the note by ½ of that, which means that a dotted half note equals 3 beats!
Dotted Notes
Likewise, if there is a dot behind a quarter note, it is a dotted quarter note. Since a regular quarter note is equal to 1 beat, a dotted quarter note extends the value of the note by ½ of that, which means that a dotted quarter note equals 1 ½ beats!
