Music Poster AnalysisKATY PERRY- TEENAGE DREAM

Firstly this is showing a seductive image of Katy Perry. This is shown as not just advertising her album but advertising herself as a sexy, flirtatious person. She is shown not wearing very much in a seductive position centralised on the poster.

We can link this to Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze, stating that males are only attracted to the female body. Perry’s body is the main focus in this picture attracting the male audience and perhaps even making them want to buy the album that this poster is advertising. She is using her body to sell her album to a wider audience than what might originally buy it based on just the songs.

She is shown expressing herself in this image, with the quirky shoes and clothes and bright purple hair. This is showing her as independent of the world.

The colours in this poster immediately stand out to us wherever we may see the poster, be it at a bus shelter or outside a music shop. This is because the colours in the background are bright but subtle and not overpowering. Her clothing is also bright colours, as well as her hair.

Finally the text is in bright fluorescent writing to make sure that the important part stands out to people, a lot of the audience will just take a fleeting glance at Katy, but her fans will want to know about the album for example when it is coming out.

The lighting in this picture is fill lighting. This is used in a three point set up, to lessen the contrast and shadows around the subject by being placed at a different angle to the key light. It is usually softer than the key light.

We see here the information, the sizes of the details are varied, showing a scale of importance. The most important part of this poster to the artist is getting across the fact that there is a new album coming out. This is why the release date is in the largest text here.

The text here is representing the artist, where it says her name the font is quirky and out of the box, something that Perry might be wanting to get across to her audience that she is, and perhaps helping the audience to relate to her and see that it is acceptable to be different, no matter what the opinions of society.

The details of finding out more are very small and hardly visible in the corner here, this is because it is not important it is just another convention that it is put onto a poster.

Something else that the designers of this poster have done is purposefully put a bright orange cushion just above the text. This is the brightest thing on the page so naturally our eyes are drawn to it. This is clever as it puts our focus just next to the important information they are trying to get across.
