JOURNEYThe idea of Journey represents key aspects of our Santa Sabina Heritage. The journey from Ireland to Australia on the Martha Bernie by our Dominican Sisters is a story of courage hope and purpose. Their work in the community, especially in education, is inspirational. In our music the journey continues with the outreach of our Sisters in various parts of the world. The display of the Canticle of the Universe, a glorious 31 panel embroidered work gives life to the story of evolution and creation, as interpreted by the craftswomen of Kopanang. The passage of St Dominic and his followers spreading the word across Europe, South America, Asia, Australia and the South Pacific is an 800-year story. This story travels alongside our own indigenous culture with a rich musical heritage. We gratefully acknowledge Matthew Doyle for sharing this music in our opening Welcome to Country.

Santa Sabina comes together in song to celebrate and share this remarkable journey and heritage with our Dominican friends throughout the world. We celebrate at music of St Dominic’s time as well as that performed in some of the most significant Catholic churches including San Marco in Venice. The commissioning of new music for this project gives special voice to the Dominican story. Tim Hansen, Paul Jarman, Carlos Villanueva, Tony Wheeler, Mark Lewis and Luke Byrne have each told a different part of the story and have created a very special journey of musical development and enlightenment. Our journey goes well into the future with our Santa Sabina students living the ideals of St Dominic “Veritas”.Mrs Karen Carey Artistic Director

2. SALVE REGINA

Gregorian Chant

The Salve Regina is part of our Dominican heritage. It is a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and has been a prominent feature of Dominican spirituality from the Order’s beginnings. Our beautiful Dominican Salve Regina is one testament to our filial love for the Mother of the Church and the Protectress of the Order.

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, To thee do we send up our sighs, Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, o most gracious advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary.

3. CANTICLE ON A FRAGMENT OF HILDEGARD VON BINGEN

Bradley Kunda

O Ecslesia reveres St Ursula, a nun who was martyred at Cologne in the middle ages. Bradley Kunda arranged an excerpt of O Ecclesia in the style of Arvo Part for voices and strings.

Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) was a remarkable woman, a “first” in many fields. At a time when few women wrote, Hildegard, known as “Sybil of the Rhine”, produced major works of theology and visionary writings. When few women were accorded respect, she was consulted by and advised bishops, popes and kings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal uses of plants, animals, trees and stones. She is the first composer whose biography is known. She founded a vibrant convent, where her musical plays were performed. Her story is important to all students of medieval history and culture and an inspirational account of an irresistible spirit and vibrant intellect overcoming social, physical, cultural and gender barriers to achieve timeless transcendence.

Hildegard wrote hymns and sequences in honour of saints. She wrote in the plainchant tradition of a single vocal melodic line, a tradition common in liturgical singing of her time. Her music is undergoing a revival and enjoying huge public success.

4. EXCERPTS FROM THE VESPERS OF 1610

Claudio Monteverdi

The term ‘Vespers’ was taken from the Hours of the Divine Office (also referred to as the Liturgy of Hours), which were essentially a set of prayers from the Catholic Church. These prayers have remained structurally unchanged for the last 1500 years.

Musically, the Versicle is grand and majestic in its character. The Chorus chants together on a D Major chord whilst being accompanied with majestic flourishes from the Orchestra. The Nisi Dominus features a contrapuntal texture with each voice singing an independent line. As the piece progresses the interaction between the two choirs shows a duelling quality.

Claudio Monteverdi, a prolific Italian composer whose life spanned from 1567 to 1643 composed settings to these Vespers. This work was composed in July 1610, and was first performed at San Marco in Venice.

s 5. VERITAS

Tim Hansen

Veritas has been especially written for the students, Music Department and the Dominican Sisters of Santa Sabina College. It was composed to be universal enough to be performed by anyone, anywhere. The piece makes reference to the life of St Dominic and the history of the Dominican Order. Research for the piece was carried out at the Australian Catholic University, a Dominican Institution.

Focus was made on the visions by St Dominic’s mother, Jane of Aza, before his birth. She had dreamed that she was giving birth to a dog with fiery breath, and that this dog would bring the light of fire to the four corners of the globe. The composer wished to convey this story and at the same time celebrate all women of the Dominican Order, particularly the women of our Santa Sabina Community.

“This story struck a chord because it celebrated the mothers of the world. We can all achieve amazing things in life and our mothers help make this happen. This piece is for all the mothers of the world, especially mine whom I love more than words can describe.” Tim Hansen

Lyrics

Last night as I slept I had the strangest dream In my womb I bore a whelp with breath of flame And though fierce he had a gentle heart, and I was unafraid And then as I slept a stranger sang to me In a voice as clear and constant as my own That the whelp I bore with fiery breath when one day fully grown Would spread the word of God in Jesus’ name And inspire generations yet to come to do the same ‘til all corners of the Earth were lit with Heaven’s Holy flame.

The night, the mother, the dream of fire The boy, the man, the quiet voice inside Veritas

And then the vision changed a score of summers passed I saw a young man setting out from home And though I saw no companion I knew he was not alone And to each soul he met along his path He’d speak his quiet truth and spark a flame within their heart And they would join the growing chorus singing Veritas

Veritas The light, the fire, the path is long The stars, the moon, the quiet voice inside Veritas

And then I saw the world as though through God’s own eye I saw a legion of men and women bright with holy fire Which they spread with hope and courage across the land and sea From the spark that lay waiting in this unborn child in me

And then I awoke and in the predawn light I thought about my dream, so strange and grand And the power of one voice, be it a woman or a man For though years turn into centuries and the world will always change God reveals to all of us that some things will remain People are still people and the truth is still the same

Veritas The light, the fire, the path is long The stars, the moon, the quiet voice inside Veritas

6. THE MISSION

Tony Wheeler

Juan Bautista de Morales (1597–1664) was a Spanish missionary who entered the Dominican order in 1614. In 1620 he went to Manila where he learned the Amoy dialect in order to minister to the Chinese community in the Philippines. After two unsuccessful attempts to work in Cambodia, he went to China’s Fujian Province, where a Dominican mission had been established in 1631.

In deference to the fact that Morales spent most of his time in China in the province of Fujian, parts of this piece employ some melodic phrases from an ancient genre of traditional Chinese music originating from this region, known as Nanyin 南音 (southern sound). The phrases are played by the soloists and the strings. The fusion of two cultures is apparent in the piece with the Chinese element always remaining prominent.

Tony Wheeler is a performer (clarinet, saxophone, guqin and ruan), composer and teacher. Tony Wheeler is regarded as Australia’s expert on Chinese music. He spent two years in the Shanghai Conservatory studying Chinese Composition. He studied the Ruan which is a Chinese 4-string Guitar and the Gugin which is a 7-string zither. He studied and taught at the University of Hong Kong and received a Masters Degree in composition for Chinese instruments. His works have been broadcast and performed worldwide.

7. BAO YAH MAY TROI

Traditional Vietnamese

The Dominican presence in Vietnam dates from the 17th Century with the arrival of missionary priests, John of the Holy Cross and John de Arjona. In spite of numerous persecutions and challenges, the order flourishes in present day Vietnam.

Bao Yah May Troi is a traditional Vietnamese love song. The sentimental lyrics of the poetic verse are richly complemented by the beautiful melody, arranged for string orchestra and harp by Australian composer and arranger Ian Munns.

8. WAKABAUTI

Mark Lewis

People of the Pacific Islands put emphasis on music and other forms of art not just as a means of recreation but also to keep stories and legends alive.

A defining moment in the history of the Solomon Islands popular music occurred sometimes in the 1950s when a young man by the name of Edwin Sitori left his small village called Onepusu in Are’Are in the area of Malaita Island and came to Honiara in search of a better life for himself. When arriving in Honiara he engaged in what many Solomon Islanders often do when they first come to Honiara; he went on a wokabaot, a Pijin word meaning to wander around, often without any clear destination. Chinatown was a popular destination. Inspired by these walks around Honiara and what he saw, he sat down to write a piece of music that would forever etch itself into the collective memory of the Solomon Islands

When recorded by Solomon Dakei and his Solomon Islanders in the 1960s it became a big hit and this song came to define the very essence of Honiara. The idea of life in Honiara, girls and longing resonated with so many. It is still popular to this day and is sung all around the Pacific.

9. ISLE OF BEAUTY

Paul Jarman

Isle of Beauty, Fare thee well was commissioned by Santa Sabina College to honour the 800 year Jubilee of the Dominican Order. The text is loosely based on the poem of the same title by Thomas Haynes Bayly (1797–1893) as well as the stories contained in the diary of Sister M. Hyacinth Donnellan (1842–1910) – outlined in the archival material collated by Sister Elizabeth Hellwig OP titled, ‘Up She Gets, for Up She Must!’

The Martha Birnie left Gravesend on June 8 1867, arriving in Sydney on September 4 1867. On board were eight Dominican Sisters from St Mary’s Convent Kingstown Ireland, on their mission to Maitland, NSW. (M.M Agnes Bourke, M.M Teresa Molloy, Sr M. Bernard Larkin, Sr M. Augustine Fagan, Sr M. Ignatius Finnegan, Sr M. Regis Dowley, Sr M. Bridget O’Brien, Sr M. Hyacinth Donnellan).

s “Every morning the Bishop said Mass in St Patrick’s at 7.30am at which we assisted. Then we returned to Breakfast. His Lordship seemed more like a Father whilst there than anything else. Sunday after Tea he spent the evening with us, sang a couple of Irish melodies. M.M Teresa also sang the “Isle of Beauty, Fare Thee Well” and other hymns and songs.” (Up She Gets, for Up She Must!, Diary entry September 1867, pg 110)

Lyrics

Tis the hour, faces smile around the taper’s light. Who will fill our vacant places, who will sing our songs to night?  Through the mists that float above us faintly sounds the Vesper bell. Isle of beauty Like a voice from those who love us, breathing fondly, fare thee well. Isle of beauty Through the mists that float above us faintly sounds the Vesper bell. Isle of beauty Like a voice from those who love us, breathing fondly, fare thee well. Oh Isle of beauty, Fare thee well. Shades of evening close not over us Leave our lonely bark awhile. Morn alas will not restore us, yonder dim and distant isle. Oh cover spots where friends may dwell. Darker shadows round us hover, isle of beauty fare thee well When the waves round me breaking, as I pace the deck alone, and my eye in vain is seeking some green leaf to rest upon. What would I not give to wander where my old companions dwell. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, Isle of beauty, fare thee well

Lyrics from unknown author & the poem by Thomas Haynes Bayly (1797–1893)

Paul Jarman is an Australian who has had a multifaceted career in music working as a composer, performer, educator and musical director. He has written prolifically in the area of choral music and has strived to create inspiring school music projects which are inclusive of the students and wider community.

10. MARCH OF THE MEISTERSINGERS

Richard Wagner

The Master-Singers of Nuremberg is an opera in three acts, written and composed by Richard Wagner. It is among the longest operas commonly performed. The story is set in Nuremberg in the mid-16th Century. At the time, Nuremberg was one of the centres of the Renaissance in Northern Europe. It is a mature Wagner opera based on an entirely original story, devised by Wagner himself. This march from the opera is one of the most well-known loved melodies and has been arranged for solo tuba and brass quintet.

Alana is a talented tuba player who is currently in Year 7 and is extensively involved in the Music program at Santa Sabina College as a chorister and orchestral musician.

11. BABA YETU

Christopher Tin

Baba Yetu is one of Tin’s most well-known works. It is essentially a Swahililand setting of the Lord’s Prayer. Originally, Baba Yetu was written for the video game known as Civilization IV (an educational game loosely based on history and the building, formation and interactions between ancient civilisations).

More importantly, Tin’s decision to set the Lord’s Prayer reflects his sensitivity to the fact that the Bible is an ancient text which has been known across a number of ancient civilisations. This work acknowledges the digital age we live in as well as the timeless universality of the Lord’s Prayer.

Christopher Tin is an American composer whose work is mostly of a classical orientation though flavours of other cultures are a common feature of his music. His musical background is varied and diverse. In the early years of his musical development, he studied music at the University of Stanford where he actively participated in a Taiko drumming group. He continued his music studies at the Royal College of Music in London, graduating with a Master of Music in composition and conducting.

12. CHIAPAS

Carlos Villanueva

“Chiapas” is a work which fuses indigenous Latin American timbres and rhythmic ostinato with the polyphonic texture of a European symphony orchestra and choir. It features the composer on solo chromatic bass zampoñas, an instrument which is a contemporary development of the traditional Andean pan pipes. A four-part stratto fugue presented in two contrasting harmonies (European and Indigenous Latin American) alludes to the close links between the 16th century Dominican friar Bartolome de Las Casas and the struggle of the indigenous Mayan people of Chiapas. His vocal support for the recognition of their rights saw him become the church’s first Bishop of Chiapas in 1543 and first officially appointed “Protector of the Indians”. He is recognised universally as the first advocate of universal human rights. The 500-year old Mayan struggle is ongoing and gained world-wide attention in 1994 with the Chiapas Zapatista rebellion.

Carlos Villanueva (b. Chile, 1968) is a composer, performer and teacher who plays a wide variety of Latin American wind, percussion and string instruments. His original works – for which he received an ARIA Award nomination – explore European art music, Latin Jazz, World Music and traditional Latin American music. His main credits include performing with and commissioned to arrange for the Sydney Children’s choir; touring internationally with his own ensemble “Tigramuna” for Musica Viva Australia and recording for Nigel Westlake’s “Solarmax” soundtrack. As an educator Carlos has written many works for children, developed a classroom music program and an innovative guitar and ukulele tuition and orchestral method for primary schools. His musical background was featured in a four-part documentary series presented on camera by himself for SBS TV entitled “Viva”, it is a journey back to Latin America to trace his roots.

13. WINGS OF LIGHT

Mark Lewis

At the celebration of the feast of the Translation of St Dominic, at the Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome on 25 May 2015, presiding priest Fr Michéal MacCraith, OFM, reminded the congregation of the Dominican mission as the “Guardian Angels” of the Word. This piece is evocative of the “Guardian Angels” as they are illuminated and uplifted by the radiant and joyous truth of the Word, which they proclaim with love.

Mark A. Lewis is a Music and Religious Education teacher at Santa Sabina College. He is presently undertaking a PhD in Music at Macquarie University.

14. CONCERTO IN A MINOR 1ST MOVEMENT

Edvard Grieg

The first movement is in Sonata form which features 2 contrasting lyrical melodies.

The movement begins by a timpani role followed by a descending sequence in the piano before the introduction of these main melodies which are shared between the solo piano and the orchestra. The themes are developed modulating to different keys and eventually return to the home key of A minor. Santa Sabina has had several famous music teachers who were Dominican Sisters.

s The choice of this work is to revere the work of St Margaret Hill and Sister Mary Brady who were also recognised pianists in their day. Angela Kim is an advanced pianist who is involved in the music program as a piano soloist and piano accompanist as well as a violist and chorister.

Edvard Greig (1843–1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He was known primarily for his incidental music for the play Peer Gynt written by Hennik Ibsen. He was also revered for his lyric pieces written for the piano as well as his many songs dedicated to his wife. Grieg is one of the great composers of the Romantic era which focused on individual expression and a sense of nationalism. He composed only one piano concerto. This monumental work has been hugely revered in the realm of western art music repertoire and is perhaps one of the most celebrated concertos of all time.

15. ROSARY OF STARS

Luke Byrne

“What is there to say about St Dominic that hasn’t already been said over the last 800 years? In writing the final piece for this concert, I felt I had to somehow draw together the threads of the history we have explored, but also to chart his story beyond us into the future.

Many elements of his story have found their way into this piece, but there were two facts about St Dominic himself that captured my imagination. Firstly, he is the patron saint of astronomers, which gave me license to write Epic Cinematic Space Music (wait for the organ). Secondly, and more importantly, Dominic is credited with the institution of the Rosary. As fate would have it, there is a devotional prayer titled The Crown of Twelve Stars, based on a quote from the Revelation of St John describing a vision in the sky: “a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars”. It couldn’t have been more perfect as the foundation of my text and music, Rosary of Stars.”

Lyrics

Verse

I walked the stony road in bare feet So my brothers in my shoes could tread. I lay on the cold, bare floor So my sisters could sleep in soft beds.

I gave the clothes off my back to strangers Who never even knew my name, And I did it all with the hope in my heart That others would do the same.

Bridge

But so many still walk those stony roads And cannot lie down in peace, And I never had enough to give away.

The beauty and the sorrow of our time upon the earth Turn my eyes t’ward heaven above, and as I pray:

CHORUS

A woman clothed with the sun With the moon beneath her feet. A shining crown of twelve stars In a rosary complete.

You may see those you’ve loved who’ve passed, Or infinite points of white flame, But no matter who you look for in the night sky, Be kind to those you meet along your way.

Verse

In my mind’s eye I see the distant planets, Bright auroras dance upon their skin. The Voyagers glide past with their messages in gold Beyond the breath of the solar wind.

Bridge

But so many still walk those stony roads…

CHORUS

A woman clothed with the sun…

Dominic… Domini Canis… Canis Major… Sirius.

But no matter who you look for in the night sky, Be kind to those you meet along your way.
