IntroductionTheWintersSchoolofMusicandMinistryStudiesatWilliamCareyUniversityisnamedinhonorofDonaldandFrancesWintersinrecognitionoftheirvision,dedication,andleadershipindevelopingthemusicprogramattheuniversity.TheWintersSchoolhasbeenaninstitutionalmemberoftheNationalAssociationofSchoolsofMusicsince1966andamemberoftheAmericanMusicTherapyAssociationsince1977.MusicstudyattheWintersSchoolisdesignedtorealizethepurposeandspecificobjectivesoftheuniversity.Studentsarechallengedtodiscoveranddeveloptheirownmusicalcapacitiesandinterests,sothattheymayfullyrealizetheirownself‐expression,enjoymusicasrecreation,orutilizemusicasaprofession.WilliamCareyUniversityisanaccreditedinstitutionalmemberoftheNationalAssociationofSchoolsofMusic.GraduateswiththeBachelorofMusicEducationdegreewillhavefulfilledallrequirementsleadingtolicensurewiththeMississippiStateDepartmentofEducationforteachinggradesK‐12ineitherchoralorinstrumentalmusic.TheBachelorofMusicdegreewithamajorinMusicTherapyisapprovedbytheAmericanMusicTherapyAssociation.GraduatesinMusicTherapywillhavefulfilledallrequirementsleadingtocertificationbytheAmericanMusicTherapyAssociation.GraduatesintheBachelorofMusicinContemporaryWorshipMinistrywillbepreparedforgraduatestudyand/oracareerinchurchmusic.DegreeProgramsCurriculumplansforeachdegreeareavailableonline.BachelorofMusic,withmajorsinthefollowingareas:ChurchMusic:ContemporaryWorshipMinistry ThisdegreewillpreparestudentstoleadavarietyofmusicministriesinevangelicalChristianchurches.Coursesincludestudiesinmusic,worshipstudies,age‐groupministry,conducting,mediatechnology,ensemble,andperformance.MusicEducation CertifiedbytheMississippiDepartmentofEducation,themusiceducationprogrampreparesteachersinchoralmusic,instrumental,andgeneralmusic,K‐12.Themusiceducationdegreerequiresfouryearsofcourseworkandatrimesterofsupervisedteaching.Performance Theperformancedegreeisofferedinguitar,organ,piano,andvoice.Coursesinliterature,pedagogy,andappliedlessonspreparethestudentforgraduatestudyandteachingcareers.Pianomajorsmayalsopursueanemphasisinpedagogyorcollaborativeperformance.Voicemajorsmaypursueanemphasisinpedagogy.Theseareasofemphasisaremeantto

servestudentswhowishtopursuecareersasprivateteachersoraccompanists,whilecontinuingtoservetheaspiringsoloperformer.MusicTherapy Themusictherapydegreeoffersexpertiseinmusicandpsychologythatpreparesthestudentforworkinaclinical/hospitalsetting.Thisprogramrequiresfouryearsofcourseworkthatisfollowedbyasix‐monthinternshipandleadstocertification.BachelorofArtsinMusic TheBachelorofArtsdegreewithamajorinmusicislessspecializedincourseandperformancerequirements.Thestudentsmustcompletethemusiccore(includingsecondaryappliedstudyculminatinginthesuccessfulcompletionofaproficiency)andchoose14electivehoursinmusic,ofwhich10mustbeupperlevelhours.Thisstudy,coupledwithanoutsideminorsuchasbusiness,psychology,foreignlanguage,ortheatre,iscomplementedbyastrongliberalartscore.Thisdegreedoesnotfulfilltherequirementsleadingtopublicschoolteachercertification.BachelorofGeneralStudiesinMusic TheBachelorofGeneralStudiesdegreeallowsastudenttotakeeithertwo18‐hourconcentrationsorone36‐hourconcentrationinmusic.SeeCatalogregardingrequirementsforthisdegree.Thisdegreewouldbeappropriateforstudentswhodonotdesirelanguagestudyandplantousemusicasanintegralpartofprofessionallife.MasterofMusicinMusicEducation. TheMasterofMusic(M.M.)inMusicEducationdegreeprogramprovidesanopportunityformusiceducatorstoperfectmusicianshipandenhancepedagogicalexpertisetowardbecomingmasterteachers.TheprogramsupportsandadvancesthemissionofWilliamCareyUniversitywhichistoprovidequalityliberalartsandprofessionaleducationprogramswithinacaringChristianacademiccommunity,encouragingtheindividualstudenttodevelophisorherhighestpotentialinscholarship,leadership,andservice.UponcompletionoftheMasterofMusicdegree,studentswillbeeligibleforanadvancedlicense(AA)toteachinthestateofMississippi.MasterofMusicinChurchMusic TheMasterofMusic(M.M.)inChurchMusicdegreeprogramprovidesanopportunityforchurchmusicprofessionalstoperfectmusicianshipandtoenhancespecificexpertiseinthefieldsofchurchmusicandworshipstudies.TheprogramsupportsandadvancesthemissionofWilliamCareyUniversitywhichistoprovidequalityliberalartsandprofessionaleducationprogramswithinacaringChristianacademiccommunity,encouragingtheindividualstudenttodevelophisorherhighestpotentialinscholarship,leadership,andservice.

AdmissiontoMusicCurriculaMusicAudition Priortoadmission,eachcandidateshouldperformbeforethemusicfaculty,orprogramdirector,selectionsofvocalorinstrumentalmusicrepresentativeofthestudent'shighestlevelofproficiency.Thefollowingminimumcriteriaaresuggested:Voice:twoartsongsintheiroriginallanguagesPiano:twomemorizedselectionsincontrastingstyles;samplerepertoiremightincludeaBachtwo‐partinvention,classicalsonatina/sonatamovement,Chopinprelude,orcomparablepiece.Organ:arepresentativeselection.Guitar:twocontrastingpieces.Orchestral/BandInstruments:onepreparedpiece,anexampleofsight‐reading,andachromaticscaledemonstratingtheentirerangeoftheinstrument.Inparticularinstances,astudentmaybeadmittedasamusicmajorwhohasnothadtheformaltrainingnecessarytoperformthesuggestedliteraturebutwhodemonstratesexceptionaltalent.MusicTheoryPlacement AllfreshmanmusicmajorswillinitiallyenrollinMUT161‐FreshmanMusicTheoryI.However,aMusicTheoryPlacementTestwillbegiventoallstudentsenteringtheSchoolofMusic.Studentswillbeadvisedbasedontheresultsoftheplacementtests.EvaluationofTransferCreditsTransfercreditinmusictheoryisvalidatedonlyuponsuccessfulcompletionofabasicmusicianshipexam.Advancedstandinginappliedmusicisgrantedonlyaftersuccessfulcompletionofanupper‐levelexam.  

AdmissiontotheGraduateProgram Music Education program: Application Priortoadmission,studentsmustcompleteanadmissionapplicationandeitherpossessacurrentteacher'scertificateorhavesuccessfullypassedPraxisIandPraxisIIexaminationsforteachereducationeligibility.MusicAudition Eachcandidateshouldperformbeforethemusicfacultyselectionsofvocalorinstrumentalmusicrepresentativeofthestudent'shighestlevelofproficiency.MusicTheoryPlacement Eachstudent'sbasicmusicianshipskillswillbeassessedforplacementineithertheoryrevieworothertheorycourses.

MusicHistoryPlacement Eachstudent'sknowledgeofmusichistorywillbeassessedforplacementineithermusichistoryrevieworothermusichistorycourses. Church Music program: Students must have completed a bachelor’s degree in music from an NASM accredited institution. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 over the last 64 credit hours of coursework. Complete Graduate School Comprehensive Knowledge Exam. Submit an essay of no less than 1000 words describing learning and professional goals. Requirementsforgraduationthatincludecoursework,non‐thesisprojects,thesis,andthecomprehensiveexaminationarefoundinthegraduatecatalog.Upper‐LevelExaminationsTodetermineeligibilityforupper‐levelmusicstudy,allstudentsshouldtakeanexaminationintheareaofappliedconcentrationattheendofthesophomoreyear.Theexamwillconsistofa10‐minuterecitalinthestudent’sprincipleperformingarea.Forallperformancemajorsandvoiceconcentrations,theprogrammustbeperformedfrommemory.Othermajorsandconcentrationsshouldconsulttheirappliedteacherregardingmemorizationrequirements.StudentsmustcompletetheUpperLevelExam,theSight‐SingingExam,ALLPianoProficiencies,andSophomoreHarmonybeforeallowedtopresentaJUNIORRECITAL. JuryRequirementsAllstudentsenrolledinappliedmusicasamajorconcentrationorsecondaryarerequiredtoperformanAppliedJuryExaminationatleasttwooutofthreetrimesterseachyearOR,atthediscretionoftheappliedteacher,studentsmayberequiredtotakeanAppliedJuryExaminationeachtrimester.Repertoireandmemorizationrequirementsarecontainedineachappliedcoursesyllabus.Eachstudentwillchooseonepieceandthejurywillrequestadditionalselectionsfromthestudent'srepertoirelist.Performancemajorsshouldexpecttoperformseveralselections.Upper‐levelperformancemajorsmustsignupfortwojurytimeslots.StudentsmustsubmitmusictotheiraccompanistFOURweekspriortojuries.Appropriateattireforthejuryisexpectedofallstudentsandisasfollows:Men:slacks,jackets,ties,ordressshirtsandtiesWomen:dressofmoderatelengthorsuitableslacksoutfits*Avoidjeansandathleticshoes.Appliedvocalandinstrumentalmajorsmayengageaccompanistsattherateof$300pertrimesterforanhoureachweekor$150forahalfhoureachweek.ObtainAccompanistsContractsfromthemusicoffice.

GradingThefinalgradeinappliedmusicisdeterminedbycombiningthejurygradewiththeprofessor'sevaluationofstudentperformancethroughoutthetrimester.Gradingcriteriaforallmusiccoursesiscontainedinthecoursesyllabus.Studentfailuretoappearforajurywithoutpriornoticetotheappliedteacherwillresultinajurygradeof"F".Certainextenuatingcircumstances(i.e.deathinthefamily,illnesswithdoctor'sexcuse)mayallowthestudenttoreceiveanincomplete("I");however,afinaltrimestergrademaynotbedetermineduntilthejuryiscompleted.FailuretobepresentataJury,UpperLevelExamination,orPianoProficiencyExamwithoutPRIORnotificationwillresultinan“F”intheappliedlessonandadeductionof$500pertrimesterfromtheMusicTalentAward.Sinceanincomplete("I")isdesignedtoaccommodatethestudentunabletoperformduringtheexamtime,andnottoexcuseastudentwhoisunprepared,themake‐upjuryshouldbecompletedbytheendofthesecondweekofthefollowingtrimester.Studentswhofailtomeetthejurymake‐updeadlinewillreceivean“F”andmustenrollandsuccessfullypasstheappliedcoursefailed.Anincomplete("I")whichextendsbeyondtheendofthefollowingtrimesterautomaticallybecomesan"F.”RecitalRequirementsStudentsinthefollowingdegreeprogramsarerequiredtopresentrecitals:Performance–Juniorrecitalof25‐30minutesandaSeniorrecitalof45‐55minutes.ChurchMusic‐Seniorrecitalof25‐30minutes.However,therecitalisoptional.StudentsmaychooseaSeniorProjectinlieuofaterminatingrecital.MusicEducation‐Seniorrecitalof25‐30minutesorcompleteasuitableseniorprojectapprovedbythestudent'sappliedprofessor,themusiceducationprofessor,andtheDeanoftheSchoolofMusic.Non‐degreerecitalsareencouraged.Schedulingwillbebasedonavailability.ProcessforSchedulingaRecitalThefollowingpertaintotheprocessofschedulingarecital:Inselectingandreservingrecitalhallspace,requireddegreerecitalstakeprecedenceovernon‐degreerecitals.Therecitaldatemustbeclearedwiththeappliedteacher(andaccompanist,ifapplicable)beforeitcanbereservedontheRecitalHallcalendar.Datesmustbescheduledinthemusicoffice.Studentswhodonotperformarecitalontheregistereddatewillnotbegivenamake‐uprecitaldatewithinthattrimester.

Degreerecitalscannotbeperformeduntilthestudentpassesarecitalhearingwiththeappliedmusicfacultyatleasttwoweekspriortothescheduleddateoftherecital.Studentsareresponsibleforsettinguprecitalspaceandcleaningupfollowingarecital.ProficiencyExamsAllstudentspursuingaBachelorofMusicdegree,aBachelorofArtsinMusicdegree,oraBachelorofGeneralStudiesinMusic,mustpasstheALLCOMPONENTSOFTHEUPPERLEVELEXAM.Allmusicmajorsmustpassaproficiencyexaminthesecondaryareaofappliedmusic.Studentsmustpasstheproficiencyexambytheendofthesophomoreyearormustcontinuetoregisterforsecondaryappliedmusiceachtrimesteruntiltheexamispassed.Examsconsistofthefollowing:PianoSoloRepertoire:Performtwointermediate‐levelsolorepertoirepiecesincontrastingstyles;memorynotrequired.OpenScore:Playallcombinationsoftwonon‐adjacentparts(ST,SB,AB)fromanopenscore.Thestudentwillpreparefouropenscoresfortheexamination.Hymn:PreparefivehymnsfromanassignedlisttakenfromTheBaptistHymnal,demonstratingappropriateuseofpetal.Harmonization:Harmonizeamelody,inthegivenkey,usingRomannumeralsorchordsymbols;modulate,thentransposetoanotherkey.Thestudentwillpreparefiveharmonizedtunesfortheexamination.Accompaniment:Preparetwoaccompaniments,aswritten,whileasecondpersonplaysorsingsthemelodicline.Prepareandplaytwo,two‐handedaccompanimentsusingchordsymbols,whileasecondpersonplaysorsingsthemelodicline.VoiceSingfrommemorythreecontrastingsongswithpreciseintonation,musicalaccuracy,andsenseofstyle.ThreeselectionsshouldincludeoneItalianartsong,oneGermanlied,andoneEnglishpiece(preferablyfromoratoriorepertoire).GuitarPlaytwointermediate‐levelpieces,onefrommemory.Playonepiecefromachordchart.Playallmajorandminorscales.Playallmajor,minor,andaugmentedtriads,andmajor,minor,anddiminishedseventhchords.PlayI‐IV‐V7‐Icadencesinallkeys.

RecitalsRecitalClass‐9:30a.m.everyFridaySeniorRecitals,FacultyRecitals,Concerts,GuestRecitals,etc.‐Thursdaysat7:00p.m.and8:00p.m.WhenThursdaydatesarefull,Tuesdaysat7:00p.m.,then8:00p.m.willbethenextoptions.

Attendanceatrecitalsandschoolconcertsisconsideredanintegralpartofeachstudent'sdevelopmentasbothaperformerandaninformedlistener.MusicmajorsandminorsregisterforMUR000andMUR010,RecitalClass(nocredit),eachtrimesterofundergraduatestudy.Attendanceisrequiredpertrimesterat80%ofweeklystudentrecitals,degreerecitals,facultyrecitals,specialconcertspresentedorsponsoredbytheWintersSchool,andotherrecommendedmusicalperformances.Agradeof"A"or"F"willbeearnedintheclass.Studentsreceivingan"F"willberequiredtocompleteapprovedlisteningassignmentsinordertoreplacethatgrade.StudentswhofailRecitalClassfortwotrimesterswillforfeit$500pertrimesterfromtheMusicTalentScholarship.Nostudentwillbeallowedtograduatewithamusicdegreewithoutsuccessfulcompletionof12trimesters(ortheequivalentfortransferstudents)ofRECITALLAB.CareyScholarsarenotexcusedfromthisrequirement.HonorsColloquiumwillnotcountasrecitalcreditorasanexcusedabsencefromRecitalLab.Studentswillnotberequiredtoregisterforrecitalclassduringmusictherapyinternshipandstudentteachingtrimesters.Transferstudentswhohavemetrecitalrequirementsattheirrespectiveschools,butdonothavetranscriptcredit,mayberequiredtosecurealetterverifyingrecitalattendance.Allperformancemajorsandconcentrationsmustperformduringrecitalclassatleastthreetimesduringtheyear;studentsinsecondaryandelectivestudyareencouragedtoperformalso.Informationandinstructionsregardingrecitalclassperformanceswillbeavailablefromindividualappliedteachers.Appropriateattireforallrecitalperformancesconsistsofthesamerequirementsforjuryexaminations.GuestArtistsEachyear,theWintersSchoolinvitesanumberofAmericanandinternationalperformerstopresentrecitalsintheSmithAuditoriumandtheRecitalHall,followedbymasterclassesthefollowingday.Theseperformancesprovidestudentswithmarvelousexposureto
