Music Video Analysis:Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran – Everything Has

Changed

Narrative StructureThe music video’s narrative is a boy meets girl tale told in a linear fashion. It shows two young children who meet each other and throughout the course of the day in their school a seemingly deep friendship blossoms between the two. The video is seemingly a metaphor for the friendship between Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. This is made apparent at the climax of the video when the two singers pick up the kids – Swift picking up the girl; Sheeran picking up the boy – they exchange a quick heartfelt glance before going their separate ways along with the children. Our video will also incorporate a boy and girl infatuation. We thought this video would be good to analyse due to the way the relationship shown develops. In the video, the boy and girl become closer. In our video the relationship would breakdown but we would want to depict in a subtle manner.

Characters: BoyThe boy is relatively young (most likely between 6 – 9 years old). He’s used to represent Ed Sheeran with similar features such as Sheeran’s, now iconic, wild red hair. The boy in the video is also seen with a guitar serenading the girl. This connotes to the audience that music has been apart of Sheeran’s life for a long time and also that music is a way of binging the two together.

Character: GirlThe young girl (also most likely 6 – 9 years old) is used to represent Taylor Swift in the video. And again her hair is used to symbolise this as the young actress’s curly blonde hair mirrors the stars. As well as this, an element of voyeurism is used to show Swift’s notorious nature for falling for a boy quite quickly. A lot of the time we see her staring at the boy, whether he is serenading her or she is just captivated by him as a whole. This can be seen on commenting on the actress’s recent infatuations and stemming her need for companionship to her childhood.
