Gabrielle Alpin- Home

Watching this video it is clear to see that the video fits Andrew Goodwins theory in that there are many close ups of the main artist. The whole video is a story that revolves around her and so this emphasises her importance.

I picked up on the story the video is representing and found a link between this and Goodwins theory that there is a relationship between visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music. In this case I felt that the first half of the video contradicts the lyrics. The lyrics mention the phrase home is where the heart is and the visuals dont fit with this because they show the singer struggling to get by having been robbed and so portrays that she doesnt have a home or somewhere safe to stay. This then changes towards the end of the video as the singer is shown buying a guitar and her facial expressions show that she is really happy which could therefore indicate she feels much more at home with music.

There is also some voyeurism, which is mentioned in Goodwins theory as in the first scene of the video a group of young men approach the singer and take advantage of her vulnerability so they can rob her.

In reference to Sven E Carlssons theory I would say that this music video would be under the televised bard category. This theory states that the singer is a storyteller, who uses on screen images to illustrate their inner thoughts and the lyrics.

Iggy Azalea ft. Rita Ora

This music video fits under many of Goodwins key concepts. Firstly, the video shows a relationship between the visuals that illustrates the lyrics. The song is called Black Widow and there are references to the spider throughout the video. There is also a relationship between the music and the visuals as the two artists can be seen clapping their hands in time with the beat.

Voyeurism is displayed in this video in terms of the treatment of women. In the first scene one of the artists tries to place an order at the restaurant but the man she is with stops her and demands that she order the same as him. There are also a lot of close ups of the main artists throughout the video, indicating their importance.

In reference to Carlssons theory I would put this video under the commercial exhibitionist category. This theory states that these types of music videos show a materialised and aspirational performer. Their life is likely to be desirable materialistically and emotionally. Shots and scenes will be appropriately glossy and production values extremely high. This video most definitely represents this theory particularly as it features many special effects scenes.
