  • 8/21/2019 Music Video Analysis: Melanie Fiona - 4AM

    1/1

    2) This extreme close-up of a Newtons cradle illustrates Goodwins

convention which states there is a relationship between the music and the

visuals as the balls are swinging and come in contact correlating to the beat

of the song. Also, a Newtons cradle can sometimes be used to pass time when

people are waiting for something. This relates to the music video as Melanie

Fiona is becoming impatient waiting for her lover to return home.

1)This is the opening shot of 4am which is a mediumclose-up of Melanie Fiona sitting at the end of her bed.

Usually, when people have their head in their hands

they are either deep in thought or worrying about

something. Essentially, this gives the audience a hint as

to what the music video may be about.

    3) Red rose petals conventionally

    represent romance and passion but

these red rose petals are in water.

This could suggest that Melanie is

drowning her lover in love. She has

trust issues hence why she is

    paranoid about his whereabouts.

    6) This extreme close-up is of 2champagne glasses, with one in

focus and one out of focus. The

    blurred champagne glass could

symbolise her lover and the fact that

she does not know what he is doing

    so her mind is unclear.

    8) Here we can see a medium close-

up of Melanie Fiona kneeling on the

floor. This is the point of the music

    video where the lighting becomes

    much colder and the editing

becomes faster. This is because the

    song is near its climax.

    9) Here is another shot of 2 champagne

glasses however this is for her lover and the

female dancer in the club. The use of

repetition reinforces the idea that he shouldbe drinking with Melanie instead of this

women. Also, one of the lyrics in the song is

Hes probably somewhere with a dancer,

sipping champagne which is exactly what we

can see in this screenshot.10) Goodwin stated that usually there is a

demand on the part of the record company for

lots of close-ups of the artist. This convention is

present in this music video as there are

numerous extreme close-ups and mid close-ups

    of Melanie Fiona.

    7) A typical convention of R&B music videos

is voyeurism. In this extreme close-up we can

see Melanie Fiona zipping up her dress. This

shot forces the audience to look at her

cleavage. The idea of voyeurism in music

videos is also one of Goodwins conventions.

    5) An example of the relationship

between the visuals and the lyrics is

this extreme close-up of achampagne bottle being opened. The

lyrics being sung are Pour me up a

drink, I swear I need it.

    4) Another example of the

relationship between the music andvisuals is this gas stove. The stove

comes alight as soon as the chorus

begins which is when both the beat

and the tempo of the song speed up.

    Melanies voicealso changes as it

    becomes louder and more powerful.
