MUSIC VIDEO FEEDBACKQ3: What have you learned from your Audience Feedback

PRELUDE

After I finished my 3rd render of my video, I put out a survey to see what people thought of the video to see if it matched what I was trying to achieve, both in its audience and its appeal.

I did this alongside a focus group video so I got enough feedback to know what went wrong, want went right, and what I could do to improve. Ultimately getting people to evaluate my final product.

I have learned a lot from my audience feedback, giving me a lot of information about how I can/could of improved my video. If I had the time, I would re-film in accordance with what I have learned from my audience.

As you will see later on however, I did manage to fulfill a lot of what my target audience enjoyed!

QUESTION 1

This is quite a basic question. I asked out of 10, how they found the video. It collected a few varied results, ultimately sitting around 7- 8 out of 10. This is a good result! Seeing as how I knew that the video might be a bit of a niche audience with the song.As far as results go, this shows that I have a very “Marmite” video with some enjoying it, and others not so much.

QUESTION 2

Fairly self explanatory. I asked whether or not the video fit the age group I was aiming for, and again, a large result, of about 88% of people saying it did and only 12% saying no. Again this shows my video did seem to appeal to the age group I was targeting at. I am happy with this result, and believe I successfully aimed my video at the right people.

QUESTION 3

Receiving a mixed response when asking about the story. A good percentage of people understood what was going on, with some people getting a slight grasp on the story, and others just not fully understanding what was going on.

From this I can gather that the story is somewhat loose and open to some interpretation, and that some people didn’t understand that certain parts were almost metaphorical if you will. I have learned from this that making metaphors more obvious would of likely helped the video!

QUESTION 4

I asked this question because I wanted to see if the additions I made added to the overall experience of the video, and made it less dull, all 3 versions of the video we made available to the respondents, so they would have been able to see the difference between the first and 3rd draft.

With the majority of response being yes, It means that it did add some effect in one way or another for the viewer. I added this to add depth the to the video, and thankfully it paid off. It was a decision I wasn’t sure of myself, but risked to hopefully improve the overall content.

QUESTION 5

Asking this was to prove that I met my target of what kind of music video it was, it was designed as a narrative/performance hybrid, so with the majority of response being hybrid, I am glad it came across, I can see how it might be a concept as well, and narrative was something I was trying to convey.

In turn, my audience believed the music video to be a hybrid which is what I was aiming for!I didn’t ask them to specify which hybrid, as the majority of people I asked were not media students, so I can take this result as a pinch of salt, as it may not of been understood properly

QUESTION 6

In my final question I asked my respondents, I wanted to know if my poster and digipak worked well with the video.

With a majority saying yes, but some who are torn between yes and no, it begs the belief that my ancillary products might be a little bit too “up-beat” for my video. This might mean that I need to change the colour scheme slightly, or in a way to bring the mood of the products down slightly.I use this later on in Q2 of my evaluation. And I do agree with my audience to an extent. Though I did want to portray the song in the ancillary products.

CONCLUSION

In Conclusion, I find that to a majority of viewers, the video fits its intended purpose and fits what I planned out to do.

A few minor changes might need to be made in the case of my ancillary products and possibly my video

The audience agreed that my video matches its original intent. ie, to be a hybrid video (Narrative and Performance) and to be aimed at 16- 20 year olds.

I have learned from all this, that even though my product and the ancillary products were enjoyed by my target audience, there were many ways I could of improved my products, albeit this was an experience to learn from, I still believe my product to be rough, and my audience have shown it could be made smoother around the edges.
