• Laura mulvey – Feminist perspective – women there purely for object purposes – voyeurism (we’ll do this next lesson)
Forms and conventions
1) Performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m1EFMoRFvY
A performance video focuses on showing footage of the artist or band.
- Pitfalls?- Costs?- Interest?
2) Narrative http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XduKcHA80MU
Video has a narrative (story attached to it) that relates to the lyrics of the song.
3) Concept – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqhPxDa-7DU
Single concept that is usually obscure or surreal for the audience – usually including special effects
• Does the music and the video go together?
• Alfie – Pink Floyd – Another brick in the wall• Toby – Michael Jackson - Thriller • Daniella – Red hot chilli peppers - Californication • Syd - Madonna - Vogue• Claudia – The Human League – Don’t you want me baby • Faye – Buggles - Video killed the radio star • Ellie – Backstreet Boys – Backstreet’s Back• Karina – Queen – I want to break free• Paige – No Doubt – Don’t Speak
• You will prepare an analysis of your above given video.• You will need to use Goodwin’s theory to assist in your analysis,
giving clear examples of how the video fits into the video ‘types’.
• You will need to directly compare it to a modern video of your choice.
• This will need to be presented in the most interesting way possible (prezi, voicethread etc) as it counts towards your research on your blogs.
• You will also present your findings to the rest of the class (by this, I don’t want you to read off the screen, I want you to be standing up, formally presenting it)

Laura Mulvey
1) In what videos can we see the ‘Male Gaze’ theory? Give examples with an explanation.
2) Do you believe that women “experience the text’s narrative secondarily”? Why?
3) Does this help with the continuation of sexism? Does this suggest that the music industry is corrupt and fuelled by sexism?
4) Do you think women play on this stereotype? Why?
• Do you agree with Mulvey’s ‘Male Gaze Theory’? Why/why not? Use examples to support.
