Kings Of Leon

The American rock band Kings of Leon has come a long way from just doing the styling of their traditional Southern rock to the wide range of Pop Rock, Garage Rock Revival and Hard Rock.

They made a come back in 2008 with there album Only by the night which made a international success with there top number No.1# hits Sexes on Fire and Use Somebody.

This family band are Known for their quirky, subtle videos and their portrayal of their Southern life and home.

The opening scene presents to the audience a faded burring flame trying to emerge from the darkness. This relates to the title of the Sexes on Fire.

From the close up shot we can see the lead singer (Caleb) looking dazed and confused yet hot and bothered which is suggested by the lighting - the use of the orange represents the flames of fire which then ties in with the title.

This shot is used as it established the first verses of the song, ‘Lay where you're laying, don't make a sound’. This first line of the songs fix in with his position of action of laying down on the bed.

‘I know they're watching, they're watching’ another line taken from the first verse is used very effectively with these to snap shots as it matches with the actions or emotions of the members of the band. The lead singer knows there (people) are watching him being flirtatious therefore covers his face from the shame and then there is a quick cut is used to show a blurred vision of a member of the band being the people watching.

The low key lighting within the video can suggest the mood and the genre of the music.

By this person watching can also suggest that he is suspecting that the couple are up to no good which may implicate that there is an affair sparking.

The quick cut then turns to the pile of water. By the reddish, lighting which represents the fire element of the song that is that dominates the whole video, the significance of the water is to try and cool or put the fire out.

Now theses quick cuts are used in the course of the song where we can see a more performance aspect of the band in company with an instrument . Also with the lyrics of the course Your sex is on Fire represents she is teasing and acting very sexy as to temp him so she gets him hot and bothered.

From the left the leader singer says dark of the alley, which means that the couple are sneaking around so they wouldn't be seen which reinforce my idea of the couple are having an affair (even though within the music the women he is suggested to have this affair with is absent in the video). The multiple use of editing like the quick cuts are used very efficiently, as they show the emotions show the farcical expression of the band members knowing or being suspects of the affair. Here we the quick cut is use to show the disappointed express of a band member.

Here is another shot where we can see the performing aspect in this video. Whereas one of their most popular song Use Somebody is more of a documentary of the bands journey from concert to concert.

Again with the fast cuts showing the facial expression have now become more chaotic as the romantic tension between the lead singer and his mystery women heats up.

Now we see the lead singer toss and turn because, his is now becoming more hot and bothered because she is teasing him.

Now we can see that the other band members are now restricting him down trying to keep him from continuing this affair.

Again we see the performance of the band – and with this shot adding with the lyric if it's not forever, if it's just tonight showing that the lead singer knows that their affair is coming to an end and he may never see her again.

As the suggested theme is about Caleb having an affair, the showing of the bible is very subtle as committing adultery goes against the ten commandments and by the ripping and throwing of the pages may symbolize that Christian morals are being thrown away, because of the affair.

With the water falling over his head may link back to the pile of water in the beginning of the Music video suggesting that it’s purpose is to put out the fire, but here we can see that it’s true purpose may have been to cool down the leader singer from getting hot and bothered about the affair.

Now nearing the ending of the video we can see that a dark gas -like substance emerging from Caleb’s mouth that like very demonic might imply that he was posses to commit the affair.

Now the editing in this video made the styling effective as it was used to capture the emotions and action of the band members within the theme of the video. Here are captures used as flash backs of the accruing events that transpire in the video.
