Handel: The Messiah Date: Saturday, December 6, 2014 - 8:00 pm Location: Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, MATickets: Adult $42, Student $15, Youth $5 Buy Tickets

The Worcester Chorus of Music Worcester has the unique distinction of being one of the most outstanding ongoing choral groups in the United States, having been founded in 1858 to sing in the first annual Worcester Music Festival in the newly-built Mechanics Hall. Its repertoire includes not only the Western world's finest choral masterpieces, but also contemporary literature, arrangements of American folk songs, classics from the musical theater, and commissioned works. Each year the chorus performs with orchestras and soloists in Mechanics Hall as part of the Music Worcester season, including an annual performance of Handel's Messiah. The Worcester Chorus has also made guest appearances throughout the Northeast and overseas.

For over 100 years, this annual Messiah holiday concert has served as a local tradition and an integral part of the Worcester Music Festival! We will be joined by high school students through our Festival Singers program, an educational outreach effort of the Chorus for interested local students, currently including participants from South Community High School and Wachusett Regional High School.

Review - Worcester Telegram & Gazette: The chorus gave beautiful voice to both the intense and the quiet segments... They skillfully navigated... the score with buoyant, rhythmic accuracy and clarity within the dense polyphony.

Soloists for 2014 Messiah Performance: Louise Fauteux, Soprano; Teresa Buchholz, Mezzo-Soprano; Richard Monroe, Tenor; Dana Whiteside, Baritone

Canadian BrassDate: Friday, January 23, 2015 - 8:00 pm Location: Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, MATickets: Adult $49, Student $15, Youth $5 Buy Tickets

In its 43rd season, the game-changing Canadian Brass has performed in virtually every major concert hall in the world, been seen by hundreds of millions of people on television, sold two million of its approximately 100 albums worldwide, and contributed nearly 600 new works and arrangements to the brass quintet repertoire. Renowned for genre-bending versatility and joyous performances, the award-winning Brass is almost single-handedly responsible for elevating the art of the brass quintet to what it is today.

Canadian Brass is made up of five extraordinary talents: visionary founder, tuba legend and business specialist Chuck Daellenbach plus four top brass stars—Caleb Hudson and Christopher Coletti (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone) and Bernhard Scully (horn). Beyond their unparalleled musicality, each player possesses the creativity, good humor and love of performing that is the ensemble's hallmark. In addition to a non-stop touring and recording schedule, Canadian Brass is continually innovating to expand the brass repertoire, satisfy and challenge a loyal fan base, and use new media to connect to audiences worldwide.

They provide extensive educational outreach under the banners Effortless Performance and Shape Your Musical Destiny, the latter of which helps emerging musicians navigate the brave new world of self-production and promotion.

Review - National Public Radio: After four decades, it's great to see Canadian Brass--practically an institution at this point--still sounding fresh, still attracting young virtuosos and, above all, still having fun with the music.

Jamie Barton & Bradley MooreDate: Saturday, February 7, 2015 - 8:00 pm Location: Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, MATickets: Adult $42, Student $15, Youth $5 Buy Tickets

The winner of both the Main and the Song Prizes at the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, a winner of the 2012 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and a Grammy nominee, American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton has been described by The Guardian as “a great artist, no question, with an imperturbable steadiness of tone, and a nobility of utterance that invites comparison not so much with her contemporaries as with mid-20th century greats such as Kirsten Flagstad.”

Ms. Barton will be accompanied by pianist Bradley Moore. Their performance schedule includes a stop at Carnegie Hall in February 2015.

Review: Singers like Barton put such soul and character into the music, that one opens up to unfamiliar opera just a little bit more. Go Memphis

One of Boston's premier orchestras, the Boston Philharmonic is not your average musical ensemble; on the contrary, the Boston Philharmonic follows a vision of "passionate music making without boundaries." To us, this means presenting top-notch music in a manner that both music aficionados and the casual listener can enjoy.

One way we achieve this is through our innovative pre-concert talks with conductor, Benjamin Zander, who has a unique approach to explaining classical music. His intense passion for the art form attracts hundreds of attendees for each talk. As a result, our audience describes the Boston Philharmonic as "passionate," "inspiring," "unique," and—perhaps our favorite descriptor—"un-stuffy."

The St. John Passion is a dramatic representation of the Passion as told in the Gospel of John, constructed of dramatically presented recitatives and choruses, with commentary in reflective chorales, ariosos, and arias all leading to a magnificent final chorale. Compared with the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion has been described as more extravagant, with an expressive immediacy, at times more unbridled and less “finished.”

The Worcester Chorus, under the sponsorship of Music Worcester, Inc., has the unique distinction of being one of the most outstanding on-going choral groups in the United States. Founded in 1858 to sing at the first annual Worcester Music Festival in the newly-built Mechanics Hall, the 100-member group includes both amateur and professional singers from Worcester County, northern Connecticut and the Boston area. Its repertoire includes not only the western world's finest choral masterpieces, but also contemporary literature, arrangements of American folk songs, classics from the musical theater and commissioned works. Each year the Chorus performs with orchestras and soloists in Mechanics Hall as part of The Worcester Music Festival, including an annual performance of Handel's Messiah and a Spring Choral Concert. Ballet: Aldophe Adam's GiselleA presentation of the Russian National Ballet Theatre Date: Friday, April 17, 2015 - 8:00 pm Location: Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge Street, Worcester MATickets: Adult $51, $46, $43, $40; Student & Youth $25 Buy Tickets

Music Worcester has been fortunate to have had a great relationship with two Russian ballet companies in recent years, the Moscow Festival Ballet and the Russian National Ballet Theatre. They alternate each year performing in Worcester. This will be a single performance at the gorgeous Hanover Theatre and a sell-out is expected. The ballet is about a peasant girl named Giselle who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. They target her lover for death, but Giselle's still passionate love for him frees him from their grasp.

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union's ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world.

Review: “Their gracefulness, perfect edges and lines demonstrate why the ballet, like opera, is such a powerful art form. You can feel the emotion in your seat without anyone saying a word.... The Star Press

Young Artist CompetitionAn annual competition for middle school and high school studentsRewarding Dedicated Young Musicians

The Music Worcester Young Artist Competition is each Spring and is open to Worcester County residents ages 12-18 who are considered eligible by their music teachers. Applicants must perform a movement from a concerto or a work from the standard classical repertoire on an orchestral instrument or piano. Applications are made available in the early Spring.

This competition awards scholarships including the top award, the Music Guild's Stasia B. Hovenesian Prize, honoring Music Worcester's long-time former executive director.

Greater Worcester Community Foundation maintains and awards the Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Prizes. The Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Fund of Greater Worcester Community Foundation was set up in 1989 as a perpetual fund by Joyce Gafvert Adderley and Judy Gafvert Richardson in memory of their aunt for whom it is named. Sylvia was a member of the Music Guild, a life-long resident of Worcester, and she had made note of a wish to establish a scholarship with Music Worcester.

Young Artist Competition scholarships may be used for school, materials, lessons or other needs.

Beginning in 2014, the competition was divided into two days, the first for middle school students (grades 6-8 or equivalent), and the second day for high school students (grades 9-12 or equivalent).

In addition to presenting the grand prize at its annual luncheon, the Music Guild of Music Worcester invites the winner to perform. All of the winners have the opportunity to perform at other events throughout the year.

All efforts, including competition judging, audition space in Alden Memorial Hall at WPI in Worcester, staffing by Music Worcester and all Music Guild fund-raising are donated. All monies raised go to the students. The Music Guild began awarding scholarships in 1986 and the first Stubblebine winner was named in 1990.

In its role as the volunteer arm of Music Worcester, the Music Guild is an important part of the cultural life of Worcester, providing financial and educational support to its parent organization. One of its most valuable contributions is yearly financial sponsorship of the opening concert of the Music Festival Season. The Guild banner is proudly hung in the lobby of Mechanics Hall, signifying the close and important bond between the Guild and Music Worcester.

The Music Guild contributes to the Young Artist Competition that is held in the spring of each year. The competition awards prizes to four musically talented youths in the Greater Worcester area who audition before a panel of judges. One of the judges is drawn from the Guild membership, and the Guild contributes the substantial First Prize. The Music Guild winner performs for Guild membership at its annual Spring Luncheon.

Music education and outreach are an important part of the Guild's mission. Its Music To Go program provides funds for groups of local professional musicians to go into Worcester elementary schools to present interesting, entertaining concerts to the students that demonstrate the various instruments of the orchestra. In addition, in the spring and fall, the Guild sponsors a series of lectures on a variety of musical topics, that are open to the public as well as to members.

Festival SingersA Unique Choral Experience for Youth

Inaugurated for the 2008-2009 season, The Worcester Public Schools Festival Chorus Project gives young singers at the high school level in the Worcester Schools an opportunity to sing with The Worcester Chorus. Students are paired with a singer-mentor from the Chorus, attend rehearsals with the adult chorus and sing with the Worcester Chorus during the season.

“The Worcester Chorus continues to benefit a great deal from our Festival Singers Project. The enthusiasm and energetic spirit of these young artists reminds us of the essential need to pass along the great tradition to future generations. I'm proud of the hard work and profound growth of these students, performing some of the most challenging works in our repertoire. We hope this program will only grow and become a model for other mentoring projects in the performing arts.” —Andrew Clark, Music Director, 2006-2009

“I greatly enjoyed singing with the Worcester Chorus this year because it has allowed me to be better at sight reading. This experience has also allowed me to expand my knowledge of musical repertoire.” —Cheryl Goodney-Rios, Festival Singer

“Being in The Worcester Chorus has given me—as a singer and as a performer—a chance to improve and definitely define my voice. I am so looking forward to joining again next year, and performing the amazing classical pieces. It's a friendly and great atmosphere.” —Phyllis Duff, Festival Singer
