    Clefs

    A clef is a musical symbol placed at thebeginning of the staff that determines theletter names of the lines and spaces. The

    two main clefs are the treble and the bass.

    Meter is the regular recurring pattern of strongand weak beats of equal duration also known astime. The meter or time signature in a musicalcomposition is indicated by a fraction and

    located at the beginning of a piece of music. Thelower number of the fraction tells what kin d ofnote receives one beat. the upper number tellshow many beats are in a measure

    In western music there are two types of mete,simple and compound in simple meter the uppernumber is either 2 3 or 4 each beat is subdividedby two.

    At the beginning of a piece of music you willusually find two numbers, for example.

    The most common simple time signaturesare 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4.

    Bar lines are placed on the musical staff toseparate the divisions of the. Time isdivided in groups of pulses as defined in

    the time signature. The space betweentwo bar lines is called a measure or bar.

    A double bar line, not to be confused withthe double line, indicates that the end ofthe piece of music has been reached.
