Music Magazines

Front cover analysis

Page 2: Musicmagazines new

NME Magazine• This issue of NME features a medium

close-up shot of The Wombats as the main image, who cover most of the background with a white, plain background behind them. The band are an indie genre band and this is the main genre of my magazine.

• The text underneath the headline and ‘Wombats’ is a bold, yellow text. The coverlines on the page are written in white with the main words with a blue background. The colour scheme matches and reflect the indie genre of the band and magazine.

• The Masthead is set infront of the image, with the headline ‘The Wombats’ infront of them in the middle of the page. This is because they are the main feature of the magazine and take main priority.

• At the bottom of the page there is small strip with a black background and white text whereas at the top of the page there is another small strip with a yellow background and black text, these are there to stand out and show that they are different information. The main content is about festivals and new music which would interest the reader.

Q Magazine• This issue of Q uses the image of Lana Del

Rey as its main and only image, to show the focus of her as the main story.

• The blood on her head give connotations of danger and would definitely attract the reader into reading it. The editor uses the pun ‘so what’s so bloody good?’ which resembles the blood on her head.

• The background is plain behind her to make her stand out, with the masthead of Q being shown as white text with a red background, as it normally is so that it’s recognisable for the reader.

• A cover line on the right hand side is shown on a yellow background, as if it is a sticker.

• Other cover lines are written in black, pink or white. The text written in pink are to stand out the most as the main headlines in the magazine.

• At the top of the page there is a headline displayed as a banner with each word on either a yellow or pink background in black, bold text. This adds effect as it is probably the first thing the reader will see and want to read.

• The overall genre of the music magazine is indie-pop and this slightly reflects the genre I would like to make my music magazine – indie.

Kerrang Magazine• This issue of Kerrang features Hayley

Williams, from Paramore, as the main image, it is placed on a black background.

• The masthead ‘Kerrang’ is written in white text to stand out against the black background.

• The coverline for the story about Paramore is infront of Hayley’s fist, to shows that it relates to her. The fist portrays violence and this matches the rock genre of the magazine. I have chosen to follow an indie theme with my magazine and this does not reflect how I would like my magazine to look.

• The other cover lines are placed on the right hand side of the page and across the bottom, there aren’t any placed on the left hand side due to the image of Hayley Williams being positioned there.

• The other text on the front cover is written in either white, black or red. The word ‘Paramore’ is also written in white to show it’s importance as it is the main story.

• The red white and black colour scheme matches her hair and give connotations of anger and stress which again links with the rock genre of the magazine.
