Word Identification + Meaning = Reading

Elements of Reading

What is Reading?

Word Identification Meaning * Phonemic Awareness *Vocabulary

* Phonics * Comprehension

* Fluency

Failure to master phonics is the number one reason children experience reading difficulty.

Successful readers …

…must be able to identify sounds and read words accurately and automatically in connected text in order to understand the meaning.

*Read with accuracy

*Read with automaticity

*Read with expression

Time Spent Reading Each Day (Book: Overcoming Dyslexia – Dr. Sally Shaywitz)

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss

No Excuses…

Overused excuses

for NOT reading at home:

My dog ate my homework.

I don’t have time.

I had to go to soccer practice.

I had to go to my piano lesson.

More…overused excuses

I went out to eat last night with my

friend.

We went to a Thunder game

and got to bed late.

Make the commitment

to improve your child’s READING.

If you have time for everything else. . .

please make time for

READING.

Read with your child…

the results will last a lifetime!
