Principal’s Message

Dear South Western High School Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that the fi rst marking period is already fi nished. When the school year began, I challenged all of our students to “Leave your mark”, which is this year’s theme for the high school. From theSchool Nurse

Health Room Notes —

All medications must be delivered to the school nurse by a parent/guardian, in the original bottle/package with the necessary prescription written by the physician.

Learners are NOT permitted to transport medication at any time. We hope that you will continue to support us in following the School board policy that helps to insure the health and safety of all the learners. This policy is also explained in the High School Handbook.

If your learner has a change in or a new medical diagno-sis during the school year, please update the school nurse by calling 717-633-4807, ext #21810 or #21811.

The Health Room has criteria that we follow when sending a learner home: they either need to have a tem-perature of 100 degrees or higher Fahrenheit, vomiting in school or having severe diarrhea. There are extenuat-ing circumstances that do arise and we look at them on a case-by-case basis. Also if your learner has a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher or is experiencing vomiting they should not return to school for at least 24 hours.

Please complete and/or update your child’s Emergency Information as soon as possible. These forms keep your child safe in the event of an emergency and the district must have accurate and up-to-date information. The infor-mation on your Student Data Sheet is also required for the district’s “School Messenger,” an automated system that will contact parents via telephone with important updates.

Each 11th grade student must have a physical examination completed as required by the Pennsylvania School Health Law. Please return physical forms to the Health Room.

The new Physical Examination form can be downloaded from:

http://www.portal.health.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/schools/14130/examinations/556719

Or pick-up a copy in the high school offi ce.

South Western School

District is in need of

Athletic NewsAs the fall sports season draws to its close, there is defi nitely plenty to celebrate! After a long few months, battling the elements of excessive heat and heavy rains, our Mustang athletes persevered through it all. At one point or another, every program enjoyed exciting success! The Field Hockey, Boys Soccer, and Volleyball teams all qualifi ed for their respective YAIAA League tournaments. Girls Cross Coun-try, Field Hockey, Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis, and Volleyball all earned the chance to compete in their PIAA District III tournaments. For the fi rst time in program history, South Western Volleyball advanced to the PIAA 4A State tournament, following a Fourth Place fi nish in the District! Additionally, many of our individual athletes shined in postseason competition and several are still being recognized with All-League, District, and even State distinctions! It was a fantastic fall, fi lled with quite a collection of impressive accomplishments. The future remains bright here in Mustang Country and we are ready to maintain momentum this winter!

If you point your web browser to YouTube and search for Mustang Vision you should fi nd the class YouTube Channel. On the channel you will see the daily live broadcast of the morning announcements as well as replays of past shows. The class has also live streamed select assemblies and sporting events. This past fall they broadcast select home football games and senior night games for boy's soccer, girl's soccer, fi eld hockey, and volleyball. They are planning on live streaming select girl's and boy's basketball games and wrestling matches this winter. They will also be live streaming the veterans day assembly on their channel. You can follow Mustang Vision on twitter or instagram at @SWMustangMedia for announcements about what events will be covered closer to the actual date.

Student CouncilThis year’s homecoming theme was “A Whole New World.” The entire week leading up to

Homecoming, we hosted a spirit week, dressing as our favorite Disney characters, wearing blue and gold, showcasing our travel destinations, as well as a pajama day. On Saturday night, the gym was transformed into Aladdin’s paradise, as we hosted the annual homecoming dance.

Over 80 children trick-or-treated at our Haunted Hallways event. They traveled through South Western’s Disney World, meeting characters from the Incredibles, Winnie the Pooh, the Wizard of Oz, the Avengers, and more. At each stop along their way, students made ghost crafts, played hoop games, and pinned the tail on Eeyore!

Nine of our Student Council Members (9-11 graders) attended the PA Student Council State Conference at Cedar Crest High School. Here, they participated in diff erent workshops, including one led by our school’s council president, attended speaker presentations, and networked with other students. The theme of this conference was “See you at the M.O.V.I.E.S” (Motivation, Or-ganization, Volunteerism, Integrity, Enthusiasm/Energy, and Spirit). Members of Student Council left the conference replete with ideas for integration here at our high school.

Safety Education NewsDuring the 2017-18 school year, South Western’s Safety Education classes participated in a “No Excuses” billboard design contest sponsored by the Center for Traffi c Safety. Leah Collins (cur-rent 11th grader) was selected as the winner from all York County high school entries. Leah’s billboard design, focusing on the dangers of distracted driving, was placed along Rt. 94 to be seen by motorists entering Hanover.

With the $1,000.00 mini grant, Mr. Sprenkle and Mr. Poalucci purchased 350 Cell Slips for all current Safety Education students. Cell Slips are a safe driving tool that block cell signals when a phone is inserted into it which allows students to limit distractions and focus on the road.

Varsity ClubThe Varsity Club is selling yard signs for $10.00. You can pick up a sign at the high school in the main offi ce. Show your support for South Western Mustangs!

LINK Crew NewsThe 2018-19 Link Crew Leaders worked with the Class of 2022 to create approximately 300 lollipop spi-der treats to send along to a local retirement community. The treats were accompanied by greeting cards with plenty of well wishes. Both the freshmen and the Leaders enjoyed the activity and appreciated the opportunity to reach out to others.

The Link Crew Leaders are also currently busy planning a movie night for the ninth graders that will be held after school on November 15. All ninth grade students are welcome to attend. There will be games, a raffl e prize, and free snacks. Pizza will also be available to purchase for $1/slice.

Key Club NewsThe members of the South Western High School Key Club have had a busy start to the school year. This fall, our 140 members completed over 1,000 service hours at our school and in the community. Club members could be seen helping at elementary school PTA and PTO events, taking tickets and selling pro-grams at home football games, helping at community events and fundraisers with the Pleasant Hill Fire Company, Gutherie Memorial Library, the Apple Harvest Festival, Trunk or Treat, Hanover Halloween Parade, Halloween in the Park, and many others.

A special thank you to the donors who participated in our fall blood drive for the Central PA Blood Bank. On Monday, November 5th, we saw 70 donors from the school and community. Mark your calendars for our next blood drive on Wednesday, May 8th.

Our club is assisting a group of York County elementary school students who have started a project called Coats of Kindness. If you would like to donate gently used winter clothing to be distributed to this in need in York County, please send items to school with your child to be dropped off in room 602 the high school.

We look forward to a busy winter season that includes holiday service projects like the National Wreath Project at Gettysburg National Cemetery, Christmas Blessings Express with New Hope Ministries, el-ementary school Shopper’s Room and PTA/PTO events, ushering at the fall play and holiday concerts, and running the concession stand at all home boys basketball and wrestling matches to raise money for a variety of charitable organizations. If you are interested in purchasing bags of holiday Shermer’s Pecans to help fund our many service projects, please send an e-mail to [email protected] and we will give you more info. Pecans are on sale until December 20th.

Pre-Apprenticeship is Alive and Well in Its Second Year at South WesternSeveral South Western students have taken advantage of the various Pre-Apprenticeship opportunities

available to them. Last year, out of the 4 graduating seniors in the Pre-Apprenticeship programs 3 students were off ered full apprenticeships. The companies off ering the Pre-Apprenticeships are; Elsner Engineer-ing, Kinsley Construction, and Walton and Company.

In this the second year, three students just completed their NIMS Machining credentials. Another stu-dent has completed 5 AWS SENSE Credentials and passed her AWS D1.1 Flat Unlimited Thickness Cer-tifi cation to date. The next step for these students is to obtain additional credentials and participate in an internship with an industry partner.

There are currently 2 Pre-Apprenticeship Programs off ered through the Hanover Area Chamber of Com-merce-Metals/Machining and Welding. There were 2 programs off ered this year through YCAL (York County Alliance for Learning)-Construction and Manufacturing Technician. While the Construction pro-gram is closed for the year, applications are being accepted until early December for the Manufacturing Technician Program (12 Grade), application deadline is November 21st. Visit to learn more about this program. For the 2019-2020 school year YCAL hopes to add Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship to their pro-grams.

Any student or parent who would like more information about the Hanover Chamber of Commerce or YCAL Pre-Apprenticeship Opportunities contact Mrs. Lisa Dennis, Career Counselor or Mr. Bruce Lee, Technology Education Teacher at 717-632-2548.

Pre-Apprenticeship/Trades Not Just for GuysAll my life I have learned to work on mechanical equipment with my hands, but I never thought it would

allow me to fi nd a career I’m going to love. Three years ago in my family's farm and power equipment shop, I spent a lot of my childhood learning about tractors, I asked my dad to show me how to weld. He set me up on a MIG welder, had me run some beads and make my fi rst “masterpiece”, even though it didn’t look too pretty, he was still proud. After that I still didn’t consider welding as a career for me, I was still

set on being a nurse, though I wasn’t too keen on the idea of going to college. Not until January two years later, did I realize I was looking the wrong direction completely.

Spring Semester 2018, in metal I class with Mr. Lee, I was shown a video that changed my mind on what I was looking to do, I was told to not follow my dreams. Many people would say that shouldn’t be said to someone, especially high school students, but the facts are millions, of people are retiring from trades and we have no one to replace them. After the realization of what I wanted to do, I took action. I was told about a pre-apprenticeship program provided by my school for welding, it gave me all of the experience needed. I was guaranteed a job interview after the 6 week apprenticeship that followed my graduation. An added bonus was that I come out completely debt free. I will be set.

I told my metal teacher I wanted to be in this program and two weeks later I was on a welder fueling the future I never knew could be so bright. Since that day I have gotten fi ve American Welding Society credentials, my D.1.1 welding certifi cation which places me to be the youngest female from South Western to get that certifi cation. This

program has given me more opportunities than a college would have and also has rounded me as an individual, making me a more outgoing and confi dent person. I never thought I would be talking to a State Con-gressman, participating in the areas annual Miss Hanover pageant, and talking about my experiences to many diff erent people. No matter how you approach the future, consider trades, they need the workers and the opportunities have never been better, so do not follow your dreams.

Save the Date, November 30 for New YCAL OfferingsMark Friday, November 30 on your calendar. This is the fi rst day to sign up for the Spring Semester

YCAL Career Exploration Programs. Fall Career Exploration opportunities are off ered in; Business Ad-ministration and Sales, Construction/Trades, Creative Careers, Education, Entrepreneurship, Financial Services, Hospitality Management, Insurance, Sports Management, Manufacturing Careers, Marketing, Mechatronics, Nursing, Psychology/Human Services, Transportation and Logistics, and Water and Envi-ronmental Sciences.

Students in grades 10-12 may sign up for the programs. Where possible, Mrs. Dennis, SWHS Career Counselor, will transport students to the programs. For additional information visit www.ycal.us/men-toring-program. Be sure to sign up early. Click on the tab to complete the on-line application. In the fall almost all programs fi lled up quickly! For the Fall Semester South Western has the most students sign up from any of the York County Participating schools!!! Let’s continue this great participation rates.

11th and 10th Graders Will Go Through Interviews This YearAll Juniors will go through an interview with a business/community representative December 3, 4, or 5.

This has been a component of the graduation project for several years. Students will be sent an email that tells of their designated date and time to report to the High School Library for their interview. All students should be well dressed, and bring a completed Job Application, and Resume with them to their interview. Preparation for the interviews will take place during Career Coaching meetings. The interviewer will con-duct a 10 minute interview with the student who will be applying for some type of entry level job that they could have as a high school student. After the interview the interviewer will review the evaluation sheet with the student. While students might be apprehensive about the interview, after the interview is through most students report that it is good experience and that they do well on the interview. It is also a great way for us to show to the members of our community what great students we have at South Western.

All Sophomores will go through an interview in early April. The process will be similar to that detailed above. Interviews are being moved from the 11th to 10th grade year to insure that our students are pre-pared when going for their fi rst interviews which we feel may take place during the summer after 10th grade.

Mini-THONThe 2019 Mini-THON campaign has offi cially begun! South Western Mini-THON is a student-run organization
