Miracle dog: Gaspar is being called a miracle dog after he escaped from the cargo hold of an airplane. Janis Cavieres, the dachshund’s owner, put her pet in a proper carrier, which was then placed in the hold of a flight from Santiago to Iquique, in northern Chile. The carrier fell out and broke open before the plane took off, and Gaspar escaped. The little dog wandered around in the Atacama Desert for several days before he was found via a search the owner organized on social media. A veterinarian said the dog was malnourished and underweight, but was going to be okay. Jail bird: Some people never learn and Patrick Ryan, who hails from Accrington, Lancashire (England), is one of them. This sexagenarian started breaking the law when he was 14 years old and has been in and out of jail numerous times since then. To be exact, he has been convicted 468 times for 667 offenses. Police may be reluctant to print out his criminal record because it’s about 100 pages long. He’s been caught many times dining and dashing, and has gone to jail for other thefts, too. Ryan may be the person with the longest criminal record in all of Britain, which makes his activities costly for taxpayers. News junkies: James Eubanks couldn’t figure out why his neighbors’ newspapers were ending up in his yard—until he set up a night vision camera. The Winston-Salem, North Carolina (US), man discovered the culprits were three foxes who, at that point, had delivered 10 torn copies of the local newspaper and nine chewed-up phone books to his yard. He says his footage showed the foxes not just dropping the papers, but also dragging them around and playing with them. One thing they did not appear to be doing with the papers was making nests for them- selves. And one can assume they weren’t reading them, either. Ugly to beautiful: The Recycled Island Foundation is an organization in the Netherlands that takes ugly trash and makes it into something beautiful, while fighting river pollution at the same time. The Foundation collects litter from the Maas River in Rotterdam and uses it to make beautiful, floating public parks. Litter traps collect junk in the river that is then sorted. The recycled materials are used to create hexagonal floating platforms. The live plants on the landscaped platforms serve as shelter and breeding grounds for microorganisms and fish. The first completed park boasted 139.35 square metres (1,500 sq. ft.) of habitat. Quoteable Quotes Quoteable Quotes “The life given us by nature is short, but the memory of a well-spent life is eternal.” —Cicero “Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of the body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day.” —Thomas Jefferson What’s Happening Trivia 1. A man fromYongsheng County, Yunnan Province (China), did just that. When he was out looking for wild mushrooms, he came across alittle puppy, or so he thought. He took the pup home andlooked after it, but must have realized something was amisswhen the puppy grew into a very large Asian bear, which is aprotected species. The man was not fined because he was cooperativeand the bear was in good health.Escaped pigs: A security camera revealed that, in the middle ofthe night, two pigs appeared at a gas station in Upper Coomera,Queensland (Australia). When the sun came up, the porky beastsgreeted amused customers and staff, many of whom took photos. The pigs spent several hours checking out people and cars. They also enjoyed rutting around in a garden before taking anap. It turns out that the friendly, but mischievous, pair had gottenaway from their owner’s home, located not far from the gasstation. The owner soon arrived on the scene to pick up thetwo curly-tailed beasts.

Everybody’s Talking!Surprising scene: Residents of the town of Neuwied,Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany), got the shock of their lives whenthey were confronted by an African elephant wandering downa city street. The completely out-of-the-ordinary occurrence wasquickly reported to police. When they arrived, they found theelephant’s keepers, who worked for a circus that was visitingthe area, were already on the scene using their animal trainerskills to corral the large pachyderm, whose name is Kenia.Everything turned out well. There was no property damage, noone was hurt, and a calm Kenia was led back home. Beautiful cakes: An artistic woman named Elena Gnut ofKaliningrad, Russia, uses her considerable talents to make anddecorate cakes, and in the process has become a renownedpastry chef. Her often-whimsical designs are so beautiful that it’shard to imagine destroying them by eating them. Designsinclude intricate bouquets of flowers, models of fictional charac-ters, a stork carrying a baby wrapped in cloth, and an angelperched on a cloud. Her tricks include molding into differentshapes and using edible dyes of different colors to paint charac-ters and scenes on her creations. Mmmm, good!Pet mix up: A woman from Jinzhong, Shanxi Province (China),was really enjoying her new pet, but after a while she wondered ifsomething might be wrong with the Japanese Spitz puppy shehad purchased from a pet store. For instance, her pooch did notbark, and it wouldn’t eat dog food. As it grew, its tail became longand fluffy, and its face became pointed. Other dogs were afraid ofit. Eventually, she took the animal to the Taiyuan Zoo where anexpert revealed that her pet was not a dog at all, but a domesticatedwhite fox. Astonished by the news, the woman gave the fox tothe zoo so it could receive proper care.Bad voice: If you are going to be an opera singer, it’s best ifothers like the sound of your voice. Such is not the case forHeather Webb of Norwich, England. The would-be singercaused such a disturbance with her practicing that neighborsin her apartment building went to the authorities. One manlikened her screechy voice to that of a drowning cat. It tookover three years, but a judge finally banned her from singingwhile at home. It didn’t take long for Webb to disobey theorder and once again cause her neighbors to fume. This time, however, she was arrested for her noncompliance.

Everybody’s Talking!Miracle dog: Gaspar is being called a miracle dog after heescaped from the cargo hold of an airplane. Janis Cavieres, the dachshund’s owner, put her pet in a proper carrier, whichwas then placed in the hold of a flight from Santiago toIquique, in northern Chile. The carrier fell out and broke openbefore the plane took off, and Gaspar escaped. The little dogwandered around in the Atacama Desert for several daysbefore he was found via a search the owner organized onsocial media. A veterinarian said the dog was malnourishedand underweight, but was going to be okay.Jail bird: Some people never learn and Patrick Ryan, whohails from Accrington, Lancashire (England), is one of them. Thissexagenarian started breaking the law when he was 14 years oldand has been in and out of jail numerous times since then. To beexact, he has been convicted 468 times for 667 offenses. Policemay be reluctant to print out his criminal record because it’sabout 100 pages long. He’s been caught many times dining anddashing, and has gone to jail for other thefts, too. Ryan may bethe person with the longest criminal record in all of Britain, which makes his activities costly for taxpayers. News junkies: James Eubanks couldn’t figure out why hisneighbors’ newspapers were ending up in his yard—until he setup a night vision camera. The Winston-Salem, North Carolina(US), man discovered the culprits were three foxes who, at thatpoint, had delivered 10 torn copies of the local newspaper andnine chewed-up phone books to his yard. He says his footageshowed the foxes not just dropping the papers, but also draggingthem around and playing with them. One thing they did notappear to be doing with the papers was making nests for them-selves. And one can assume they weren’t reading them, either. Ugly to beautiful: The Recycled Island Foundation is anorganization in the Netherlands that takes ugly trash and makes itinto something beautiful, while fighting river pollution at the sametime. The Foundation collects litter from the Maas River inRotterdam and uses it to make beautiful, floating public parks.Litter traps collect junk in the river that is then sorted. The recycledmaterials are used to create hexagonal floating platforms. The liveplants on the landscaped platforms serve as shelter and breedinggrounds for microorganisms and fish. The first completed parkboasted 139.35 square metres (1,500 sq. ft.) of habitat.
