Chapter 2 -Getting Started

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 24

The PackageMVS/Quick-Ref for Windows comes with a binder containing product documentation and a CD-ROM containing the programs and data that comprise the product.

RequirementsMVS/Quick-Ref for Windows requires a PC that is running Windows 95 or higher. A CD-ROMdrive is required for installation.

If the entire database is placed on the hard drive, approximately 570 MB of hard drive space isrequired. If only the programs are loaded to the hard disk, approximately 9 MB of hard drivespace is needed. As an alternative, the database may be accessed directly from the distributionCD-ROM without requiring space on the hard disk.

Installation PlanningThe following items should be considered when installing MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows:

This release of MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows can execute directly from the CD-ROMwithout a formal installation. Although it does not require hard disk space, please notethat this is not recommended because it will be the slowest possible execution ofMVS/Quick-Ref for Windows. If you desire to use the product in this way, you canproceed directly to the section titled "Executing from the CD-ROM" on page 25 of thisguide.

Any previous release of MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows must be uninstalled beforebeginning the installation process.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows requires approximately 570 MB of hard disk space for atypical product installation. The product will execute on any processor capable of runningWindows 95. As with any product, faster processors provide better product performancethan slower processors.

The database used by MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows is the same database as used by themainframe version. If desired, the mainframe database could be downloaded to the PCusing the BINARY (or no conversion) specification. This would be desirable in the caseof a database which you have tailored using the selective data base load facility(QWIKSLCT).

This release of MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows does not have a utility for excluding datafrom the database. As a result, the entire MVS/Quick-Ref database must be either copiedto the hard disk or accessed from the CD-ROM. As an alternative, you could run theselective data base load facility (QWIKSLCT) on the mainframe and then download thedatabase to the PC.

When installing the product on a Local Area Network (LAN), the programs and databasefor the product must first be placed on the LAN server. Then, for each client, a shortcutto the executable program can be manually defined. For more information, see thesection entitled "LAN Installation Considerations" on page 26 of this guide.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 25

Most screen examples shown in this guide are taken from a Windows NT installation;however, you can also install MVS/Quick-Ref successfully on other Windows platforms.Be aware that the text displayed on the screen will appear slightly larger on Windows 95and 98.

Before installing MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows on your PC, disable any screen-saverutilities and anti-virus utilities that you are using. Some of these utilities may cause aninterruption in the installation process on some hardware configurations.

This release of MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows requires an encrypted expiration date whichis available from the Chicago-Soft, Ltd. sales office.

♦ Typical – This is the recommended setup type as all of the programs, the database, thehelp files, and the User’s Guide will be copied to the hard disk. As mentioned above, approximately 570 MB of hard disk space is required for a typical product installation(approximately 560 megabytes for the main database alone).

♦ Compact – This is the installation to specify for a minimum configuration. Theexecutable programs and help files will be copied to the hard disk. However, thedatabase will be referenced on the CD. Of course, this requires you to load the CD eachtime you use MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows; therefore, it is not as desirable in a heavy-use situation. This setup type uses about 9 megabytes of hard disk space.

♦ Custom – This selection allows you to specify exactly what files should be downloaded tothe hard disk. The executable programs, help files, and readme.txt file must be copied tothe hard disk as the install program will always create a shortcut to these files.

You must decide whether you want to download the entire database (QWIKREF.QDB) ora pointer to the database on the CD (QWIKREF.QDX). As mentioned above, using thedatabase on the CD requires you to load the CD each time you use MVS/Quick-Ref forWindows; therefore, it is not as desirable in a heavy-use situation.

Chapter 4 - Accessing MVS/Quick-Ref forWindows

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 42

Accessing MVS/Quick-Ref for WindowsAs discussed in Chapter 3, MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows is a MDI application. This means thatyou can look up multiple items in the database at the same time much the same way that a wordprocessor, such as Microsoft Word, can open multiple documents at the same time. Refer toChapter 3 for additional information on how to take advantage of the MDI architecture.

You start MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows by opening the QrWin58 folder and double clicking onthe MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows icon.

When the MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows program, QWIKREF.EXE, is invoked, it automaticallyopens up a display and presents you with the MVS/Quick-Ref main menu.

The Main MenuWhen MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows starts, its initial window, the main menu, is displayed. Theinitial window is actually a dialog program that will take you to the next level. Figure 15 showsa sample main menu.

Figure 15- Main Window

The main menu of MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows operates very similar to the main menu for themainframe version.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 43

Click “Reference Information By Category” to display a product category code selection listshowing all defined product categories.

Click “Reference Information By Name” to bring up the Request Reference Informationdialog. This display request panel allows you to request an item selection list or the displayof the reference information for an individual item.

Click “Vendors, Products, and Release Information” to bring up the List Vendors, Products, and Releases dialog. This dialog allows you to request a vendor or product selection list.

Click “Textmarks” to initiate a dialog to select or delete any of the various textmarks that youcurrently have defined.

Click “History” to initiate a dialog to display the last 16 items you have viewed.

Click “Search Reference Information” to initiate a dialog which will allow you to perform anitem-by-item search looking for a specific text string in the database.

Click “What’s New” to display a database item showing the new information in the currentrelease of MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows.

Click “Cancel Lookup of item” to terminate the lookup of reference information.

Reference Information By CategoryWhen you click “Reference Information By Category” on the main menu, the dialog shown inFigure 16 is displayed.

Figure 16 – List of Categories

As an example, suppose you double clicked (or single clicked and clicked on Select) thePROGLANG category. The following dialog as shown in Figure 17 would appear listing all theproducts in the database associated with the PROGLANG category:

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 44

Figure 17 – List of Products Associated with PROGLANG Category

Suppose the C/C++ Language Syntax product was the topic you were looking for. By doubleclicking on that entry, the following dialog as shown in Figure 18 would appear listing all itemsassociated with that vendor, product, and release.

Since this particular product has each item chained together in sequence, if we select the“.INTRODUCTION” item, we start at the beginning of the topic. Thus, Figure 19 shows thisitem displayed by MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 45

Figure 18 – Items Associated with C/C++ Language Syntax

Figure 19 – Item .INTRODUCTION

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows supports the GETNEXT and GETPREV indicators in theMVS/Quick-Ref database. Notice the tool tips over the right-arrow button. This button will takeus forward through the C/C++ Language Syntax product. Once we move to the second item, theleft-arrow will be enabled; this button will carry us to the previous item in the product.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 46

Reference Information By NameWhen you click “Reference Information By Name” on the main menu, the dialog shown inFigure 20 is displayed. This facility is useful when you know the name of the item you wish todisplay such as IDC3009I.

Figure 20 – Reference Information By Name

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 47

Figure 21 – Item Selection List

When “IDC3009I” is entered in the ITEM field and the other fields are left blank, all occurrencesof the item are displayed in a selection list as shown in Figure 21.

From this selection list, you highlight the item you wish to display and click Select.

Reference Information by Vendor, Product andReleaseSometimes, you don’t know the item name, but you know the vendor or product for which theitem occurs. In this case, the Vendor, Product and Release dialog can be helpful. This dialoglists the groups of vendors or the groups of products in the database. When the list of vendorsand products is a little intimidating, selecting the vendor-only listing can help.

When you click “List Vendors, Products, and Release Information” on the main menu, the dialogshown in Figure 22 is displayed.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 48

Figure 22 – List Vendors, Products and Release

If you know the vendor, product, or release, you can specify this information in the designatedfields. This will be used to filter the list that is displayed. Of course, wildcards are accepted.

VENDOR SEQUENCETo see a list of all the vendors, products and releases that pass the filter, set “V for Vendorsequence” in the pulldown box. A sample display is shown in Figure 23.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 49

Figure 23 – List of Vendors, Products, and Releases

Since 1,120 items are in the listbox, a handy locator field can be used to position the listbox atthe desired vendor. Simply type the first few, unique letters for the vendor you are looking for asshown. In this case, “LA” was entered for the vendor “LANDMARK”.

PRODUCT SEQUENCETo see a list of all the products, releases, and vendors that pass the filter, set “P for Productsequence” in the pulldown box shown in Figure 22. In this example, typing “MONITOR FORMV” in the locator field causes the listbox to position at the MONITOR FOR MVS MSGSproduct. The sample display is shown in Figure 24.

VENDOR-ONLY SEQUENCETo see a list of only the vendors that pass the filter, set “O for Vendor only” in the pulldown boxshown in Figure 22. A sample display is shown in Figure 25.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 50

Figure 24 – List of Products, Releases, and Vendors

Figure 25 – Vendor Only List

The number under the “# Products” heading is a count of the number of products for the listedvendor. If you select any vendor with a count greater than 1, a dialog will appear to display thevendor’s products for you to select. If the vendor only has 1 product, this product dialog isbypassed and an item selection list for the one and only product is invoked.

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 51

TextmarksWhen you click “Textmarks” on the main menu, the dialog shown in Figure 26 is displayed.

Figure 26 – Textmarks Edit Dialog

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 52

Searching for Text Within ReferenceInformationThe search facility is useful whenever you need to search the text in a group of MVS/Quick-Refitems looking for a specific string. For instance, suppose you had received an error messagefrom the BETA SYSTEMS vendor and you knew that the message was from the ABENDCODES product but you weren’t sure exactly of the product’s name. Furthermore, the messagetext mentioned the text “B91BFMT”. You could use the Search facility to locate all “BETASYSTEM” messages for any product beginning with “ABEND*” that contained the string“B91BFMT”.

When you click “Search Reference Information” on the main menu, the dialog shown in Figure27 is displayed.

Figure 27 – Search Reference Information

As we learned from the movie Jurassic Park, just because we can do something does not meanwe should do it. The search facility can be very resource intensive because it reads each itemthat matches the indicated key, decompresses the item, and searches each word of the itemlooking for the text string. Depending upon the vendor, product, release, and item filteringinformation, the search could run for a very, very long time. As a general rule of thumb, if youcan filter the number of items to 100 or fewer, the search is a viable process.

What’s New

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 53

When you click “What’s New” on the main menu, the WHATSNEW item in the database (asshown in Figure 28) is displayed.

Figure 28 – What’s New

Getting HelpAn extensive help facility is built-in to MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows. To access help at anypoint while using the product, choose the 'Help' option from the main menu, then click 'Contents'.A list of available help topics will be displayed. Taking a few minutes to review these topics willyou to become much more proficient in using MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows.

Chapter 5 - User Databases

MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows 56

User Database OverviewMVS/Quick-Ref for Windows offers you the ability to add your own databases in addition to themain database provided with the product. Up to ninety-nine user databases can be accessed.Accessing these is just as simple as accessing the main MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows database.

♦ User databases cannot be created on the PC platform. They must be created on themainframe and downloaded to the PC.

♦ User databases cannot be edited due to the compressed structure of the database.

♦ User databases must have the extension “UDB”.

♦ How many user databases are supported? From zero to ninety-nine user databases aresupported.

Downloading Mainframe User DataThe user database created by QWIKREF2 should be downloaded to a PC using any suitableMainframe/PC file transfer program such as IRMA, PC3270, IND$FILE, or FTP. Transfer thefile as a BINARY file, not as an ASCII file. The file created on the PC must have a file extensionof “UDB”. The filename will be ignored.

User databases reside in the \USER directory.

Accessing User DatabasesNo special definition of the user database is required. Just download the database, ensure thedatabase is named with a “UDB” extension (the filename does not matter), and restartMVS/Quick-Ref for Window.

After downloading your user database into the \USER subdirectory, do the following to see theitems in your user database:

1. Bring up MVS/Quick-Ref for Windows.

2. Click “List Vendors, Products, and Releases”.

3. In the dialog that appears, click on the “Database(s) to Search” pulldown and bring your userdatabase into view.

4. Then, click “Show List” to see the items in your user database.
