GRAnd MASTeR’S MeSSAGe

My Brothers,

To quote Dr. Thomas Franklin, “The heaviest debt is that of gratitude, when ‘tis not in our power to repay it.” The election by you to serve the members of this Grand Lodge as Grand Master is beyond my ability to give the proper thanks due you. I promise to do my best to strengthen our Grand Lodge and our subordinate Lodges throughout this great state; however, it can only happen with your assistance. You are the strength of our fraternity, and upon you devolves the success or failure of our gentle fraternity. I along with the other Grand Lodge Officers will give you all the support we can. The Chinese always start the New Year with a slogan such as “the Year of the Tiger, or Lion, etc.” The 2014 Grand Lodge year is going to be designated by me as “the Year of You.” It is not about me.

In my mind, the most important person in our fraternity is not the Grand Master or any other Grand Lodge Officer. We are here to serve you. You are the ones that keep our Lodges going every day, week, and month of the year. You are the ones who can make new Masons, not Grand Lodge. You are the ones who give scholarships, help our widows, and do other good things for your communities. The Master, Wardens, and Past Masters are the ones who make Grand Lodge law. We the Grand Lodge Officers only enforce the laws that you make.

You and I have many challenges ahead of us; that of increasing our membership which in turn relieves our financial burdens, improving the investigation process to be sure we are bringing only good men into the fraternity, and not men who eventually disrupt the peace and harmony of our Lodges. I am an optimist and believe in this quote from Colton: “Times of great calamity and confusion have ever been productive of the greatest minds. The purest ore is produced from the hottest furnace, and the brightest thunderbolt is elicited from the darkest storm.” Working together, with the assistance of a strategic plan for our Grand Lodge and subordinate Lodges, can start the transformation of how we all move forward in the process of growing and strengthening this fraternity we all dearly love.

I leave you with my motto:

Masonry is a Gift: Receive It – Share It – Preserve It

Sincerely and fraternally,

Jerry L. MartinGrand Master

GRAnd MASTeR’S eMbLeMThe Square & Compasses resting over the flag of the Great State of Texas

indicates that we recognize those Masons who played an integral part in the formation of our state as well as our fraternity, and that we are also proud to be Texas Masons. The golden rays behind the flag represent the great luminary of nature, which rising in the East, regularly diffuses light

and luster to all within its circle, and reminds us that we should be a beacon for spreading the light of our great fraternity. The white circle around the

outer band is to remind us of that “purity of heart and uprightness of conduct so essentially necessary, thus keeping pure your thoughts,

and inspiring nobler deeds and greater achievements”.

On the back side of the Grand Master’s coin is his motto: “MASONRY IS A GIFT: RECEIVE IT – SHARE IT – PRESERVE IT”.Grand Master Martin fervently believes that the gift you receive by becoming a Mason is much like the gift of giving blood. Giving or sharing blood is a gift that keeps on giving

and preserving lives. Likewise, giving and sharing Masonry with good men will not only bring new bonds of brotherly love

and friendship, but is necessary to preserve our Masonic future.

Both Lodges named Lafayette No. 34 have been located in LaGrange, Texas, the county seat of Fayette County. According to The Handbook of Texas, “in 1826” a fort was built on the present-day site of LaGrange and a “small community developed around the fort” as “settlers sought shelter there from Indian attacks.”

Prior to the organization of the Lodge in LaGrange in 1847, Charter Member and first Worshipful Master of the Lodge, John Murchison visited the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas in 1841, being listed as a member of Wetumpka Lodge No 36 in Alabama. Later, while a member of Lafayette Lodge, he was elected to serve the Grand Lodge as a Grand Stewart in 1849. That same year, gold was found in California. Murchison organized a group to travel to California to search for gold. In an ironic twist of fate, Brother Murchison guided his group safely through the mountains, avoided the dangers such as Indian attacks and reached California only to lose his own life to an accidental self-inflected gunshot.

Dr. James Carter, author of Masonry in Texas—Back-ground, History, and Influence to 1846 and later books — Education and Masonry in Texas to 1846 and Education and Masonry in Texas 1846 to 1861 corresponded with the Senior Warden of Lafayette Lodge No 34, Wal-ter Freytag. Brother Freytag determined that one of the first private schools in the area of LaGrange was started by R. E. B. Baylor in 1839, who was a mem-ber of Baylor Lodge No. 125. In the letters between the two researchers are lists of the schools and educa-tors in Fayette County and LaGrange, the county seat, which were influenced by Masonry. This information ultimately was compiled along with information from other Texas Lodges in the previously mentioned Cart-er’s books on education in Texas.

In 1954 Walter Freytag compiled a booklet, Influence of Masonry and Masons on Early Education in LaGrange, on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of Public Education in Texas. Brother Freytag noted in his booklet that Lafayette Lodge No. 34 offered financial help for the LaGrange Female Academy’s building, chartered by the Republic in 1846, but the building was never

With the aid of Brother and Past Master Sammey Smith’s research, Lafayette Lodge No. 34 recently received a historic marker for the Lodge, which was first chartered in 1847, demised in 1874 due to inactivity, and then re-chartered in 1889. We have utilized the information provided by Brother Smith to the State of Texas in application for the marker, drawn from the history files and county history and Masonic history books from the Library and The Handbook of Texas and other online resources.

In 1848, LaGrange Collegiate Institute was started through the efforts of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and funds from the Lafayette Lodge helped to build a two story building for the school. Lafayette Lodge used the upper story for their first meeting room. The Institute was later renamed Ewing College in 1860. He noted that many Masons have served on the various Boards of Education on the aforementioned schools and other schools in the area.

In more modern times, Brother and Coach Charles Jungmichel was a beloved football coach at LaGrange High School. Brother Jungmichel’s career also included service to his Country during WWII, service to the Texas Legislature and a stint as Mayor of LaGrange. (Notes from Brother Sammey Smith paper).

During the itinerant years of The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Texas, the Twenty-Fourth Annual Communication was held at the Masonic Hall of Lafayette Lodge, No. 34, in the town of LaGrange, in the county of Fayette, on Monday, the eleventh day of June, A. The Unveiling of the Texas Historical Marker for Lafayette Masonic Lodge No. 34, AF & AM took place on April 13, 2013. The program lists the Charter officers of the first Lodge 34 as “John W. Murchison, Worshipful Master; Warren J. Hill, Senior Warden; and B. T. Breeding, Junior Warden.” At

building on the South corner of the public square was used in 1850-1851.From 1852 to 1859 they met in the William Weinert building on the Southeast corner of the square. In 1860,

the Lodge moved into the Henry Rohde building, which was later willed to the Lafayette Masonic Lodge No. 34...by Mr. Rohde upon his death. The third story of the building was occupied by the Lodge...until May of 1939 and was accessible by a wooden stairway on the side of the building.

The present Lodge Temple was dedicated on June 22, 1939. The principal speaker was Judge James W. McClendon, Chief Justice of the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin, Texas. A large crowd attended.”

Today the membership of the Lodge consists of seventy-five members.

Message from the Grand Secretary...

beginning the new Grand Masonic year

The 178th Grand Annual Communication spurred the Freemasons of Texas into a new year of action. PGM Walt Rogers is commended for his skills in leading the Masons through a busy agenda in a timely manner. Grand Master Jerry Martin and his 2014 team have already started a very busy travel schedule throughout the State spreading the message of brotherly love and friendship through his motto: “Masonry is a Gift: Receive It – Share It – Preserve It.” With our Grand Master’s vast background in business and the corporate world, the Grand Lodge Trustees expect to focus on doing

business properly. With the Grand Master’s high sense of morals, the Masons of Texas will be expected to regard each other with the respect that is due all human beings. “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.”

Masons sometimes ask why we have a fiscal year for the Grand Lodge, November 1 through October 31, which is different from the subordinate Lodge year, June 24 to June 23. A glib answer is because the Grand Lodge Laws dictates it. A more reasoned response is that different Masonic years give us a new set of leaders near the beginning of their respective year and a seasoned set of leaders by the middle of their year. This dual set of officer skills strengthens the Fraternity when the group’s fiscal year begins.

Lodges are starting to collect their annual membership dues near the beginning of the Grand Lodge year. In January, the Worshipful Master should appoint the Committee of Members in Arrears (Article 391a). Since Masons are charitable in character, the Lodge may opt to remit a needy Brother’s dues or apply for Grand Lodge Assistance (Article 125). In addition, the Worshipful Master should update his plans to obtain the funds to pay the annual returns and to review the progress of his Lodge to obtain the Vanguard Award (which requires the Lodge audit and the applicable IRS 990 to be completed).

One of your New Year’s resolutions should be to treat your Brother Masons with respect and dignity. This might help resolve the seemingly increasing number of complaints between Masons. Teach your members to conduct themselves by the traditional tenets of our fraternity – Brotherly Lodge, Relief, and Truth, or adhering to our basic core values that include – honor, integrity, ethical character, and tolerance.

One of our Past Grand Masters asserted that communication was the biggest problem the Grand Lodge had. As we begin the 2014 Grand Lodge year, please contact the Grand Secretary’s Office if we can serve you. The contact data for the Grand Lodge of Texas and the Masonic Grand Lodge Library and Museum of Texas are: 715 Columbus Avenue, Waco, Texas 76701; PO Box 446, Waco, Texas 76703; telephone 254-753-7395; fax 254-753-2944; and e-mail [email protected]. Talk to your members, to other Texas Lodges, and to the Grand Lodge. Help preserve our gentle fraternity and keep in mind that our actions are for the Craft, the Craft, and the Craft.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Tom GuestGrand Secretary
