Message From The PresidentFirst and most importantly, we would like to express our profound gratitude to God for allowing us to continue our mission of serving humanity as a means of serving Him for the last 26 years.

As you may have noticed, this year brought about a major rebrand at MWC. Our continuous growth and expansion of programs to help vulnerable families and children across Canada (and the world), deemed it necessary to deliver a new look which was reflective of our efforts to assist those in need, irrespective of religion, nationality, caste, or creed.

Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto is now evolving into Muslim Welfare Canada, indicative of our focus on the national front.

The rebrand also brings about some changes to how our programs were previously organized. To better align our many programs and initiatives that you have come to know and love for the past 26 years, we are now categorized into several streams in order to highlight the overarching objective of each.

This year, MWC launched MWC Food, an all encompassing food fund comprising of our various programs which address food and

nutrition. By the grace of God, we have continued to extend our reach while consolidating our existing services. In 2018, we established our second Arctic Food Bank in Iqaluit, Nunavut - as you all know, although food insecurity is pervasive across Canada, it predominantly affects those living in our northern territories. We have also continued to see growth in support for our other MWC Food programs, including Project Ramadan, Regent Park Meals and Meals on Wheels for seniors.

Next, we have MWC Wellness, where we believe that everyone should have the right to adequate healthcare, and we focus on providing access to free medical services for those who are uninsured. Our free medical clinics, located in Scarborough and Mississauga, continue to serve thousands of needy patients.

We understand that our children are our future, and that’s where MWC Children comes in. By providing children with the basic necessities, including food and shelter, we aim to do our part in supporting them so that they reach their full potential. Our programs also extend beyond Canada; we also support less fortunate students in Pakistan and Guyana.

The MWC Homes Fund allows us to maintain the quality, level of support, and access to resources made available to residents, providing a crucial lifeline to women, children and families in need. Finally, MWC Relief is at the forefront of providing relief when disaster strikes, again extending beyond the border. We have engaged in aid and disaster relief funding for Bangladesh, Philippines, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, regions of the Carribbean, Pakistan, Syria and Myanmar.

None of this could be possible without the grace of God, and the support of our donors, our volunteers and our community programs. We offer our most sincere thanks to you - as we continue to serve our mission: Service to humanity is service to Allah (God).

As always, we pray that Allah continue to bless all of our donors, volunteers, supporters, well-wishers and our hardworking staff with the best of both worlds.

Aameen.

Naushaba Ali President Muslim Welfare Canada

Assalamu Alaikum! May the peace and blessings of Allah (God) be with you all.

THIS YEAR BROUGHT ABOUT THE EVIDENT REBRANDING OF MUSLIM WELFARE CANADA. As we have continued to grow through our expanding programs helping vulnerable families and children across Canada and around the world, we felt it was time for our brand to reflect this incredible growth and change. Our new look is a bold statement of our constant efforts to provide the best possible services to Canadians while narrowing our focus on a more national front.

Major Muhammad Abbas Ali (1921-2009) and his wife, Sarwar Jahan Begum (1928-2013), started the Muslim Welfare Centre in 1993 to be a centre of charity and service to the needy, irrespective of religion, nationality, or ethnicity, and we are overjoyed to see it continue to thrive as an embodiment of these values. Our 26 years of service would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors and volunteers and we thank you for your continuous support!

Their life and legacy still inspires us today as we strive to serve humanity and fulfil the mission that they began over two decades ago.

Food Bank

850,000 Canadians use food banks each month. Help MWC build its Food Fund in Canada by donating to our National Food Banks, Project Ramadan, Seniors Meals on Wheels and many other community food programs.

MWC Annual Report 2019

Each month, 850,000 people in Canada turn to food banks for assistance. We think that’s 850,000 people too many.

By donating to our National Food Banks, Project Ramadan, Seniors Meals on Wheels and other programs, you have helped provide meals to people across the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga, Whitby, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal, Inuvik in the Northwest Territories and Iqaluit in Nunavut.

Our founders opened the first MWC food bank in 1993 where their work began in a small 100 square foot room in Scarborough, Toronto.

It was a milestone for the community and provided much needed relief for our neighbours in need.

Over the last 26 years, we have served thousands of families, expanded our services and facilities and opened food banks in three additional cities, Mississauga, Inuvik and Iqaluit.

Each food bank supplies beneficiaries with perishable and non-perishable food, household items, clothing, footwear and winter gear free of cost.

Last year alone, we had 27,800 visits to our food banks, including newly arrived refugees.

“It showcases what Canada is all about...Paramount is very proud

to sponsor the food here and most importantly to serve along

many great volunteers in the kitchen...thank you very much to

Muslim Welfare Centre for everything that you do, we are very

proud of you as a community.”

Mohamad Fakih, CEO of Paramount Fine Foods

THIS YEAR MWC LAUNCHED MWC FOOD, AN ALL-ENCOMPASSING FUND COMPRISING OF THE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES YOU HAVE LOVED AND SUPPORTED OVER THE LAST 26 YEARS.

Since our inception, combating food insecurity has been the driving force behind many of our programs, enabling us to be leaders in the front line of the fight against hunger in Canada.

Project Ramadan

Nothing carries the spirit of Ramadan better than feeding the less fortunate. Our public events in Toronto and Ottawa where volunteers packed food baskets drew hundreds of volunteers.

Our founders always encouraged youth to engage in uplifting their communities, and what better showcase of this than through Project Ramadan. This year we celebrated the eleventh year of its successful operations thanks to the brilliant Project Ramadan team.

Hundreds of young people from across the GTA and Ottawa come out to volunteer their time to prepare thousands of food baskets that contain nutritional food for those in need.

At a cost of just $50 a basket, these baskets symbolize the blessed month of Ramadan, a month of giving and gratefulness.

Since 2009, this program has raised over $1.3 million which has allowed MWC to support over 26,000 families.

Arctic Food Bank

More than half (51%) of households in Nunavut are food insecure - the highest rate in Canada and more than three times the average rate of the other provinces and territories (11%). In the Northwest Territories, more than 24% of households experience food insecurity, followed by the Yukon at 17%.

Food insecurity is pervasive across Canada affecting millions of people of all ages, especially those living in Northern Canada. According to Statistics Canada, the territories have considerably higher rates of food insecurity than people living in the provinces.

In 2015, MWC launched the first Arctic Food Bank in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

In collaboration with the Midnight Sun Mosque, we set out to provide necessary non-perishable food and meat for indigenous community members in need.

In the fall of 2018 we opened our second Arctic Food Bank to serve the community in Iqaluit, Nunavut. We are extremely proud of this initiative and for the opportunity to assist our friends in the North.

Regent Meals

Malvern Eats

Our program provides Regent Park residents of all ethnicities and faiths an opportunity to enjoy delicious restaurant meals served in a welcoming and caring atmosphere.

Regent Park is one of Toronto’s liveliest and most diverse neighbourhoods.

It also faces many challenges like poverty, food insecurity, hunger and a growing reliance on food banks.

MWC is proud to share that our Regent Meals program currently serves over 400 meals

every Sunday at the Christian Resource Centre in downtown Toronto.

Since its launch in 2014, we have served close to 100,000 meals to the Regent Park community!

This program provides excellent opportunities for our youth.

We always welcome individuals who are interested in sponsoring meals for $6 per meal or hosting an entire Sunday lunch program for $2,400.

A grassroots multi-agency collaboration. Launched in 2016, it has provided residents in the Malvern community with a hot, healthy meal served in a restaurant style lunch setting.

Malvern Eats is a unique example of different organizations working together to better serve their community.

In 2016, MWC teamed up with local organizations like the TAIBU Community Health Centre, 1 Love Malvern, 42 Division Toronto Police Service, Malvern Presbyterian Church, and Malvern Food Bank/

Seventh Day Adventists to lead a free meal program for those in need.

Once a week we come together to provide residents with freshly prepared lunches served in a restaurant style setting.

Since its launch, we have served over 34,000 meals to the Malvern community!

We welcome volunteers and sponsors to come join us in helping to improve our communities.

You can become a donor by sponsoring a meal.

Meals on Wheels

Each week volunteers gather to prepare over 500 lunch bags consisting of a sandwich or burger, seasonal fruit and a juice box. During the winter months, warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags are also distributed to assist the homeless in coping with the harsh weather.

Poverty and lack of accessibility go hand in hand with food insecurity.

As part of our fight against food insecurity, we started the Meals on Wheels program in order to make our support more accessible to the vulnerable.

Without fail, every weekend our dedicated and hardworking volunteers set out to deliver over 500 bagged lunches to those in need all across the Toronto and Hamilton area.

To date, we have distributed over 288,000 meals to the most vulnerable.

Help us to feed the homeless by sponsoring a lunch for just $4.

Qurbani & Zabiha

For the last 20 years, MWC has been honouring the traditions of Qurbani and Zabiha through arranging the sacrifice of cattle and sharing the meat with the less fortunate.

Sharing the joys of Eid festivities with the needy is an annual practice here at MWC.

For over two decades, MWC has been honouring the traditions of Qurbani and Zabiha through arranging the sacrifice of cattle, and sharing the meat on your behalf with the less fortunate.

We provide Qurbani meat to many parts of the world including Pakistan, Guyana,

Syria, India, Bangladesh, the Rohingya refugee camps and Azad Kashmir.

In 2019 alone, over $225,000 worth of meat was distributed.

MWC Annual Report 2019

WE BELIEVE EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO ADEQUATE HEALTHCARE. MWC WELLNESS PROVIDES ACCESS TO FREE MEDICAL SERVICES FOR THOSE WITHOUT INSURANCE, ENSURING HEALTH EQUITY FOR ALL.

Refugees, new immigrants, international students, and visitors to our country are some of the people we assist on a weekly basis, through our two clinics in Scarborough and Mississauga. Services are provided by a team of practicing healthcare professionals who volunteer their time each week, developing personalized programs for patients to develop a sense of care and trust with the community.

Free Medical

With the majority of our patients being refugees, new immigrants, international students, and visitors to the country, it is vital we provide access to medical care should the need arise.

We offer highly personalized healthcare and have served over 8,400 patients since the inception of the program in 2009.

Mother & Child

SupportIn 2015, the Muslim Welfare Centre embarked on a mission to address the grave nutritional needs and health concerns for pregnant women, young mothers and their children in the drought stricken Tharparkar desert region of Pakistan.

There is a critical need for help to improve the food situation for the vulnerable in the population who are suffering due to the shortage of basic food items like flour, rice, milk & meat, etc.

Our team of medical doctors and field workers reach out to identify vulnerable women and their children, educating them about health related issues, monitoring them throughout their pregnancy, providing them essential medicine, nutritional food, and arranging the safe delivery of their child.

To date, we have supported more than 700 vulnerable women and their children.

When a drought strikes, women and children are the ones that are most at risk. This is why MWC offers support to pregnant women suffering in Tharparkar, a desert region of Pakistan.

MWC Children

MWC Annual Report 2019

CHILDREN ARE UNDOUBTEDLY THE FUTURE BUILDERS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE. THEY ARE DESERVING OF OUR PROTECTION AND SUPPORT TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

Unfortunately, many children in Canada still lack basic necessities including food and adequate shelter, hindering their success and overall well being.

Fill-A-Backpack

MWC Children is a program which caters to the void, providing families with extra resources and outlets to help their children thrive.

Not only do our annual Fill-A-Backpack initiative and School Nutrition programs assist children in need, they also offer an opportunity for the community to come together and work towards closing the gap of inequality.

Since 2014, we have packed and distributed over 7,500

backpacks across the GTA, Inuvik and Iqaluit, ensuring children go back to school with smiles!

All children, regardless of their situations, deserve to begin the school year with their best foot forward and new backpacks full of supplies. At MWC, we are delighted in filling these school bags each year for underprivileged children.

Public School

NutritionKnowledge is power, and in order to learn, children need energy. MWC ensures that all school children are able to keep their heads up in class with nutritious food before, during, and after school.

With almost a third of the children in Toronto living below the poverty line, supporting children’s nutrition in schools is integral to our fight against food insecurity.

MWC started sponsoring school-based nutrition programs in 2009 at 3 schools and has since been working in collaboration with the Toronto District School Board, the Durham District School Board and Toronto Foundation for Student Success.

Our efforts have allowed us to extend our breakfast, morning meals, and snack programs to include 24 schools across the high need areas of the GTA, including the region of Durham.

Over the past 11 years, MWC has contributed over $300,000 in support of school nutrition programs.

MWC Children MWC Annual Report 2019

MWC operates two schools and two medical clinics in Pakistan to assist children and their families, operating schools and supporting orphans financially. Our services have now expanded to provide specialized care for hearing impaired children.

Support- A-Child

For $1 a day our MWC schools in Pakistan, we not only provide quality education to a child in need, but also provide him/her with all school supplies, school uniforms and shoes, and help their respective families with food.

Over 700 students are sponsored annually in our two schools, located in some of Karachi’s less affluent neighbourhoods.

For $2.50 a day, you can help us provide deaf children

with vocational training and high quality education at the Deaf Reach School located in Karachi. We are proud to partner with the Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF).

MWC Children also works in Guyana where we provide educational and financial support to orphans, children from low-income families and children with disabilities.

It costs less than $3 per day to support a child.

Since opening its doors in 1996, more than 14,000 women and children have stayed at the Muslim Welfare Home.

Additionally, over 500 families have been served by our Emergency Motel Program since 2013.

Recognized as the largest emergency shelter for women and children in Durham, the Muslim Welfare Home is a safe haven for women and children experiencing homelessness.

Too often many women are fleeing violence and in need of a safe space to help make the transition towards a life free of abuse.

The MWC Homes Fund allows us to maintain the quality, level of support, and access to resources made available to residents, providing a crucial lifeline to women in need.

OurVolunteers

Our volunteers are reflective of our programs and the communities that we serve - diverse in age, ethnicity, gender, and faith, but also diverse in skills and experiences.

We are eternally grateful for the immense energy they contribute to the MWC.

Programs such as Malvern Eats, Regent Meals, Project Ramadan, our Medical Clinics, Meals on Wheels and Food Banks require multiple hands for several hours at a time.

During events and the holy month of Ramadan, these numbers double and triple in hours.

Through the joint efforts of our dedicated volunteers, devoted donors and hard working, committed staff, we have been able to successfully build a sense of community and belonging through providing dignified service to our communities.

We are always welcoming new volunteers - please contact us if you are interested in contributing in any capacity!
