Studio 23 Gallery / The Arts Center
Studio 23 was established in 1959 as a non-profit 501(c3) and retains
that status today. This year they are celebrating their 60th anniversary of
existence and success. Throughout the years Studio 23 has changed
their logo and location but their mission has not changed, which is to
support the region with a visual art center and host art educational
events.
Studio 23 chose their name because of its first location. Weiland Furni-
ture store, a local merchant, opened up their arms to a founding group
of artist who wanted to exhibit artwork, which was originally located on
US 23. Folklore has stated that there were 23 founding artists but rec-
ords have shown 24 recorded names that helped bring Studio 23 to life.
To this date, Studio 23 commends these 24 names who had a vision for
the gallery and art center. Countless volunteers, artists, members, do-
nors, sponsors and now staff keep our mission alive.
Support from the community has been strong since 1959. Studio 23 has
moved from home to home (five total) and also have been homeless
during our history. Since 1999, Studio 23 have been located in the Jen-
nison building in Historic Downtown Bay City and at this home they were
able to fully realize their objective to host educational classes for all ages
and present six to eight exhibits annually. Studio 23 just completed a
major renovation of the building that includes the addition of a new class-
room, state of the art lighting and sound system, hard surface flooring
and many other improvements designed to enhance guest experience. It
is the mission of Studio 23 / The Arts Center to support the Great Lakes
Bay Region by providing a vibrant arts center dedicated to making the
visual arts relevant and accessible to all.

Art is a key element in Chris Krupinski’s life. She has been drawing and painting all of her life,
but discovered watercolors in the mid-1980s and has had a passion for the medium ever since.
The training she received pursuing art education and graphic design degrees honed her tech-
nical abilities. But, more importantly, it is the discipline of painting every day that has led to her
success.
Chris is a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society, signature member of the Nation-
al Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain Watercolor Society, TWSA (Master Status), Watercolor
West-Master, and Allied Artists, to name a few. Chris earned the first Platinum Member status
in the Alabama Watercolor Society. She is the recipient of over 200 national and regional
awards including the top award in the 2013, 2015, and 2018 Adirondacks Exhibition of Ameri-
can Watercolors, first in Watercolor West 2016, first in Alabama Watercolor Society 2018 and a
medallion award winner in the 2013 and 2015 American Watercolor Society Exhibition. Chris
has been published in major watercolor publications and has been a featured artist in numer-
ous leading national art magazines. She was featured on both the cover and a feature article in
the October 2014 issue of The Artists Magazine. Most recently Chris was featured with a step-
by-step demonstration in the Art of Watercolour magazine (30th edition).
Internationally, Chris was selected as one of the "master painters" for the Invitational Exhibition
of Contemporary International Watermedia Masters, November 2007, 2010, and 2012 in
Nanjing, China. Chris was also slected for the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour
Biennial Exhibition in 2012. One painting wás selected for the 2013-2014 Shenzhen
Watercolour Biennial. Chris has been an invitee to the 2018 Silk Road Exhibition in China. She
was invited to participate in the IWS biennial in Cappadocia, Turkey in 2014. Two paintings
were shown in the 2014 Thailand Watermedia Exposition and two in the Taiwan 2016
International Exhibition. She was invited to show in Greece in 2014-18. Chris is also a U.S.
representing artist in Fabriano, Italy.
Congratulations to Diane Roach on her showing in the Birmingham Community House Preview Charity Gala, which was on April 16th, 2019. Diane had two paintings in the show.
Honorable Mentions
Congratulations to Donna Thibodeau for showing in the Birmingham Society of Wom-en Painters where she was given an “Honorable Mention for her watercolor paint-ing entitled “Still Waters.”

ing and coordinate accepted entrees with the juror. During the day, Julie-Ann works with
Beaumont Hospital ,Arts for the Sprit Program. A number of MWCS members have been
accepted to share their work which provides great exposure and fills the walls with joy and
happiness.
Beaumont Hospital Arts for the Spirit Program is seeking 2D and 3D artwork submissions for the 2019 exhibiting year. Our program seeks to create an environment that promotes healing and com-fort for our patients, families, visitors and employees through various art forms in our hospitals.
If any MWCS members are interested in partnering with us to showcase your artwork and share your talents with the community please contact Julie-Ann Magdowski for a Call for Entry application. The gallery spaces are located on Beaumont Hospital main floors and viewed by hundreds each day. All artworks are insured while on Beaumont premises and all artwork sales go directly to the artist.
It is encouraged to submit an ample amount of artwork to form an extensive artist collection for dis-play. Display periods run from January-April, April-July, July-October, and October-January. Artists can choose to exhibit for one exhibition period or have their art shown throughout the exhibiting year on display at various Beaumont Hospital locations; Dearborn, Taylor, Trenton, Wayne, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak and Farmington Hills.

Best Practices by Belinda McGuire
In this issue of “Best Practices” I am going to discuss the best op-
tion for shipping your work. The material in this article was pre-
sented at the March 23, 2019 MWCS Spring meeting, which was
held at the Bloomfield Township Library in Bloomfield Township,
Michigan. Since I presented it in the form of a PowerPoint Presen-
tation I will try to condense the presentation to the most important
points made. The hope in including this article in this version of
the newsletter is to stay off issues with the upcoming show. As I
said at the March meeting, the MWCS wants your work to arrive
safely; we want your work to be unpackaged and repackage in a
timely manner with little issues; and to be returned safely to you.
All artist must be cognizant of those installing and removing the
show. All of us volunteer our time and we want to unpack and
repack the show in a expedient approach.
Making a Shipping Box
Sometimes we cannot find the right size box to ship our painting.
When shipping a painting, it is important to have a box that fits the
painting. You do not want you painting moving around in the box
and you do not want to pay for extra unused inches in your box size
at the post office or mailing site. So what do you need?
Making the Pattern
It is important to layout your box to the correct size. I recommend
the inside box dimension to be 1 1/2” larger than the outside dimen-
sions of your framed artwork. This ensures you will have room for
packing material to go around the outer edges of your frame.
When laying out your box pattern be sure to include glue tabs to
affix your corners. Score the corrugated cardboard at the bend lines
using a blunt instrument, like the end of you paint brush. Do not use
a sharp blade to score the bend lines, this will only weaken your box
edges and corners. Glue your box together using the recommended
glue and use a clamp or binders clips to hold the glue tabs in place
while the glue sets. This not a job for the night before shipping the art-
work so plan ahead. Make the bottom of the box first, and then fit the
lid to the box bottom allowing the inside dimensions of the top box to be
1/4” larger than the bottom of the box. See diagram provide on the next
page.
Remember your artwork must be fully framed using plexi-glass and not
real glass. Your work should be clearly label with the MWCS provided
label. Your box should be clearly labeled with your name, the title of
your artwork, and your contact information. I would place this information on mailing label and affix
it to all sides of your box inside and out.
Putting it all Together
Once your box is ready, I use pipe insulation as shown in the above image that is cut to fit around
the outside of my frame. The pipe insulation can be purchase at any local hardware store and is
easy to cut to fit your frame. The pipe insulation works well in protecting your frame. You may
include bubble wrap or other packing material (no peanuts) to lay underneath the painting and on
top of the painting. Be sure to stick a contact information labels on this material as well.
Finally I always include an packing instruction sheet, which is taped to the top and bottom of the box on the inside with an image of
my painting to aide those who are packing my work. I hope this little article helps. Good Luck and Best Wishes—Belinda McGuire
Best Practices by Belinda McGuire (continued)
Above: Is a computer generated
image of completed box bottom.
Note the binder clip or clamp used to
secure the glue tabs in place while
the glue process is complete.
To the right: This image shows how the painting is laid in
the box. More pipe insulation needs to be added to the short
sides of the painting. The packing instruction sheet is affixed
to the inside of the top and bottom boxes. The other insula-
tions laying on the painting is labeled and will be placed on
the surface of the painting (top and bottom). Note the other
packing material also has labels on them.
