MYWEEKLYPREVIEW.COM.AU MY WEEKLY PREVIEW \ OCTOBER 11, 2013 [ 5 ]

I recently bought my own stand-up paddle board (second-hand from my friend Lydia – thanks Lyds!). Anyway, I’ve enjoyed

pootling around on the water on borrowed SUPs for a couple of summers now but it’s so lovely to have my own board. It glides through the calm water beautifully (the perfect vantage point to spot turtles) and I have managed to catch a few little but incredibly satisfying waves at Happy Valley.

As I tell people who have never tried it, paddling also keeps you f t. Just ask the locals featured in our cover story this week. Mind you, they put my paltry paddling effort to shame, so I really shouldn’t even mention myself in the same column as them. They are the blokes that paddle outriggers and they do so in the globe’s most challenging canoe race – Hawaii’s Molokai Hoe.

This week Jarna Baudinette is jumping in

the boat with Ron Grabbe and his Molokai-bound mates and discovers yet another group of Sunshine Coasters achieving incredible things on the world stage. Not bad for a group of old blokes (and I mean that with the utmost reverence, Mr Grabbe).

This week’s agenda story (on page 22) looks at the state of retirement savings in this nation, and discovers that while our pension and superannuation systems rate pretty highly compared with other nations, many of us won’t have enough cash to retire comfortably.

Whether you’re ready to retire or facing many more years of work, the Coast isn’t a bad place to be, and this weekend our region was in the spotlight as the Caloundra Music Festival came to town. MWP went along to check out the acts and we’ve come away with four pages of socials. Can you spot yourself in the crowd? Head to page 10.

4 DAY FORECAST

SURF REPORTWith Steve Harris from Suburban SurfThis week still looks pretty sad in the hope for a long overdue swell. From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and he e’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

Earlier this week, a group of local men travelled to Hawaii to defend a world

title. And while their sport may not be as popular as rugby league or cricket, they’re one of the most successful sporting teams in Australian history.

Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club’s senior men’s team has won the masters division of the Molokai Hoe – a 66-kilometre marathon race staged between Molokai and Oahu islands – 13 times in the past 19 years. This Sunday will mark the team’s 20th consecutive race, and club president Ron Grabbe has paddled in every one.

Grabbe says in 1991 the club’s coach, Jason Somerville-Kimlin, was in one of the f rst Australian crews to win the open division with Outrigger Australia Canoe Club. In 1994 he approached a group of senior paddlers and asked if they’d like to attempt “the toughest race in the world”. A squad of 16 men formed, and after 10 months of intense training they had whittled down to nine.

“Mentally, it fatigues a lot of people, and they just can’t cope with the pressures of continual training,” Grabbe says. “So we ended up with the hard-headed guys, who were prepared to put the hard yards into getting a successful outcome.

We put a crew together in 1994 and Jason came over with us, and we actually won it.”

Known as the Mooloolaba Men, the team contested the masters division for over-35s and was the f rst non-Hawaiian team to win. The following year they defended their title in 15-foot seas under extremely challenging conditions.

“The water was breaking over half the canoe at a time, and seat

CROWN IN THE MOLOKAI HOE, WRITES JARNA BAUDINETTE.

Grabbe says while the team never planned to create such a long legacy, a core group of paddlers quickly formed and each year nine travelled to Molokai to compete. Many were latecomers to outrigging, such as Phil Thistlewood, who joined the team in 2001 after retiring from football.

Grabbe says most members don’t have ocean backgrounds but have always loved the challenge and

not to overtrain, whereas those who work in an off ce environment (such as Grabbe, who is the director of RGD Property) need to hit the gym more regularly.

“You’ve got to be careful because while it is strength-based, it’s mostly endurance,” Grabbe says. “So we work on our strength early in the year, and then we try and maintain that strength through our endurance training phase.”

Another challenge is that the Australian competition season winds up well before Molokai, which is held at the end of the Hawaiian season (meaning local crews are at maximum f tness). To overcome this, the Mooloolaba team mimics the competitive season by training in two-man canoes.

“There’s about eight of us, so we’ve got four two-man canoes,” Grabbe says. “The idea is that because we’ve all got a fair bit of pride in our ability, we all try to be one inch in front of the next guy, no matter what.

“To be competitive, to be at the front, you have to be blending – you have to work as a team, because you’ve got two guys in there. So it teaches you the water knowledge, all the little tricks – how do I get in front of that guy? How do I read the swells better? How can I blend better with the guy I’m paddling with?

four’s zip broke at the two-hour mark, so we were constantly bailing,” Grabbe says.

“But in that particular year we smashed the [world] record by 10 minutes, and we had a fantastic race – we overcame that with a team effort. It’s about the whole nine guys working together, sticking up for each other and backing each other up.”

camaraderie of team sport, and are willing to commit to a strict training regime to see the team succeed.

“We do four [sessions per week] on the water, and we try to push for three cross-training disciplines as well,” he says, adding that these depend on individual lifestyle – some team members work physical jobs so must be careful

FAST FACTSThe Molokai Hoe is a

66-kilometre race between the islands of Molokai and Oahu in Hawaii. It is contested by six-person

crews in 40-foot canoes and takes anywhere between

5 and 6 hours to complete.

2013 is the 59th Molokai Hoe, and more than 1000 paddlers will compete.

This is the Mooloolaba Men’s

20th consecutive year,

and they have won 13 world titles. They have been undefeated for the past

four years.

In 2012 they f nished 11th

overall, and were only one minute outside the top 10.

The team competes in the senior masters division for over 50s. Its youngest

member is 51 years old and

the oldest is 58. They train

up to 7 times per week for 10 months of the year.

“It creates eight or nine very f t guys. So when we actually go into our six-man canoe, we only do a dozen or 14 six-man sessions – because we’ve got our f tness, all we’ve got to do is learn to blend.”

The race itself usually takes anywhere between f ve and six hours, and key to staying in front is to eliminate mistakes during changeovers. Six men are in the canoe at any one time, and another three travel in a support boat; when it’s time to change over those three will be dropped into the water 150 metres in front, and have to judge exactly the right moment to pull themselves into the canoe. Those still paddling don’t miss a stroke, meaning the canoe will be travelling at 12 or 13 kilometres per hour.

Thistlewood says a quick changeover requires practice.

“It’s very eerie too, because

sometimes if the swell is large, you’ll see the canoe and it could be 50 metres away; you’ll be bobbing up and down in the water, and all of a sudden you’ll pop up on the swell and the next minute it could be 10 metres from you,” he says.

“So you’ve got to work out how you’re going to get into the canoe. It’s particularly hard for seat number one, because sometimes the nose can go across and the number one paddler can be on the wrong side and has to swing himself over. It’s very adrenalin-charged.”

All this happens in Kaiwi Channel, one of the deepest and most unpredictable ocean channels on the planet. Grabbe says conditions can whip up from lake-f at to raging swell in the space of half an hour, meaning crews must be ready to adapt. However, this can work in the Mooloolaba Men’s favour.

“Whether it’s calm or rough, we can always get out there [on the Sunshine Coast] and paddle into the conditions – whether it be a north-easterly or a south-easterly,” Thistlewood says.

Last year’s race was held in a four- to f ve-knot headwind, paddling against the current the whole way.

“That has never happened [in 19 years],” Grabbe says. “But it fell in our lap, because it’s similar to the conditions we’re having here – it’s a hard race, but we’re used to paddling

This year’s race will kick off at 8am on Sunday, October 13, which is 4am Monday our time. Go to molokaihoe.com for results or to watch the live stream (click on the OC16 logo).

hard, and the conditions didn’t suit the Hawaiians but they suited us.”

As well as winning the masters division, Mooloolaba Men crossed the line in 11th place overall, only one minute outside the top 10 open teams, many of whom are professional, fully sponsored full-time athletes.

Grabbe says the team prides itself on its achievements, and its members’ commitment to one another, which was on display during their f nal training paddle two weeks ago.

“[There were] some pretty awesome combinations and boat speed, the changes were fantastic, and the camaraderie between the guys was really tight,” he says.

“And that’s very important. Because when you’re out there and you’re feeling like you can’t do another stroke, that’s when you’ve tell the guy in front how well he’s going – that’s usually the sign that you’re hurting.

“Everyone’s just got to help each other, and that’s where that really close bonding – and the success – has come from.”

Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club holds regular

come-and-try sessions for newcomers of all ages,

whether they are interested in social paddling or

want to step up into a competitive team. Go to

and Caloundra Outrigger Canoe Club.

KEEN TO TRY OUTRIGGING?

In May, it was announced that Lake Kawana will host the 2016 World Outrigging Sprint Championships, which means a refurbishment for the area and an estimated $3 million for the local economy.

Sunshine Coast Council tourism and major events portfolio holder Jason O’Pray says the event will bring thousands of international visitors to the region, to take advantage of the Coast’s “natural stadium”.

“For events like outrigging, that natural advantage is key,” O’Pray says. “The outrigging community has been coming to the Sunshine Coast from all around the world for a long time, and it’s just fantastic that we’ve got the opportunity to host a real world championship here.

“The reason that we’re going so hard at these types of events is that it brings the international tourist dollar to the Coast. And those tourists stay a lot longer and spend a lot more money, which is fantastic for our small businesses.”

[ S O C I A L S ]Caloundra Music Festival

Kings Beach, Caloundra

The Coast played host to the increasingly popular Caloundra Musical Festival last weekend. Event manager Richie Eyles tells MWP organisers were hoping to attract 24,000 people to the weekend and they estimate to have made that target by Sunday night – an increase on last year’s attendance of 22,000 people.

Eyles says the event “all went smoothly. It was basically incident free and people walked away happy.” He adds the exposure for the Coast is invaluable, with international bands heading home to tell the world about our region. “People around the world are going to hear about it.”

Eyles names the Earth, Wind & Fire Experience as his favourite act, while the crowd favourite was Xavier Rudd. German band the Baseballs were the surprise hit.

“We were talking about the signature moment,” says Eyles. “when the headliners had arrived and here was a grandmother dancing with three and four year olds.” That moment, says Eyles, summed up the entire weekend.Photos Morgan Olson

IT’S SAFER BETWEEN THE FLAGS

Summer is still a few months away but with Coast temperatures soaring,

beachgoers are being reminded to take care and swim between the fl ags.

Surf Life Saving Queensland advises swimmers to follow the advice of safety signs and check with lifesavers or lifeguards to be sure of conditions.

While the ocean might look like great fun, it can be unpredictable and conditions like rips and dumping waves can result in dangerous circumstances and serious injury.

Toowoomba MP Trevor Watts knows this all too well.

The wave he was riding dumped him head f rst into a sandbank – notorious along Mooloolaba Beach – and he was unable to move.

The impact from the accident crushed two vertebrae and caused severe ligament damage.

The actions of patrol captain Alan Murray and his team saved Watts’ life when they put him on a spinal board and in a neck brace.

Members of the Sunshine Coast Rowing Club brought home a swag of medals – including 22 gold, 11 silver and one bronze – from the calm waters of Lake Candia, 40 kilometres north-east of Turin, at the World Masters Rowing Championships in Italy in August.

Nine local competitors contested the championships, including Jean Clark, Cindy Robinson, Darryl Gerson, Lyn Webb, Ian Luxford, Richard Hyett, Peter Fulcher, Sjored Dykstra and Rod Hutchinson. All won medals and the club took out the coveted mixed coxed eight title.

The club’s next challenge will be the World Masters Games in Ballarat, Victoria in 2014.

WOOLIES CAGED EGGS MOVE ANGERS FARMERS

Supermarket giant Woolworths has announced it will phase out the sale of

eggs from caged hens by 2018 in a move that has frustrated the egg industry.

Woolworths has also committed to no longer using caged eggs as an ingredient in its Home Brand products and to label the chicken stocking density on Woolworths brand free-range eggs.

But Victorian Farmers’ Federation egg group president Brian Ahmed says the move will be costly for farmers and is upsetting for the egg industry.

“We have invested in new cage systems that meet industry requirements and now, f ve years later, they want to ban cages with no compensation for farmers,” Ahmed says.

He says farmers will be forced to change their systems to continue to be a part of the industry. “These cage farmers have not had enough time to get a return on their investment on upgrading their cage systems.”

[ N A T I O N A L N E W S ]

Ahmed says it is important to give consumers choice.

“We want to all go free range but it’s costly. They are going to take away a good protein source from consumers that can’t afford it.”

He says free-range chickens are more vulnerable to disease and have higher mortality rates as their environments cannot be controlled.

Animals Australia campaign director Lyn White says the decision is a win for animals and consumer power.

“Hens have been paying a terrible price for cheaper eggs. It’s terrif c that Woolworths has acknowledged this and taken an historic ethical stand on this issue,” White says.

“We would hope that other retailers match this commitment so that this move sees the beginning of the end of battery cages in this country.”

Woolies also will move to ensure all fresh chicken products comply with RSPCA or similar standards within that timeline. AAP

BLANCHETT HONOURED BUT SEES ONLY FLAWS

[ W O R L D N E W S ]

Cate Blanchett was honoured with a New York Film Festival gala tribute last week, but was critical of her past performances.

She recalled her f rst role in 1994 in Police Rescue, saying she was “terrible” and that it had been “trial by f re”.

She’s come a long way since then, and is tipped to be nominated for an Oscar for her role in the Woody Allen f lm Blue Jasmine.

Even so, the actor confessed in a red carpet interview that when she looks at her performances she sees only the errors. “I’m constantly terrible. You only ever see the f aws.”

Blanchett said it was “so lovely” her f lm work was being honoured.

“A night like this makes you look back and think, `My God, well I have worked with David Fincher and

Steven Soderbergh and Tom Haynes and I’m about to work with David Mamet and I’ve worked with Woody Allen and [Martin] Scorsese.”

Working with Allen on Blue Jasmine, which recently opened in Australian cinemas, had been a good experience, she said.

“He [Allen] was much more forthcoming than I’d been led to believe he would be. He was really frank, often brutal, but I much prefer that than being mollycoddled.” AAP

SINKING MONEY INTO THE ENERGY SECTOR

The energy sector, which comprises about seven per cent of the Australian

market’s capitalisation value, is generating increased investor interest.

The largest companies include Woodside Petroleum, Santos and Oil Search. Their principal activities are the exploration, development, production, transportation and marketing of hydrocarbons.

Much of this activity is centred around Australia and nearby countries such as Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, although they do operate further af eld.

Origin Energy, another large capitalisation stock, also sits in the energy sector. While it undertakes gas exploration, its operations span the energy supply chain in Australia and New Zealand, and include power generation and energy retailing.

A group of smaller companies in the sector are focused on the exploration, development and production of oil and gas supply locally and overseas, including Aurora Oil & Gas, AWE, Beach Energy, Buru Energy, Drillsearch Energy, Roc Oil and Senex Energy.

The introduction of new land-based drilling technology over the past two decades has revolutionised global energy markets. The extraction of gas and liquids through unconventional means has ramif cations across a wide range of countries, commodities and industries.

centred on gas embedded in shale rock formations. Shale is essentially mud that was laid down millions of years ago and has hardened into f aky rock. Decaying animal and vegetable matter in the mud gives rise to the gas and liquids that can be extracted.

While the technology has generated controversy around competing land and water usage, it has been applied primarily to coal seam gas extraction in Australia.

Coal seams are swampy forests piled up and compressed over millions of years. Methane is absorbed directly onto the coal itself and is kept there by water pressure. Gas is released when the pressure is reduced. Coal seam gas will provide the basis of much of the feedstock for the large LNG plants in Gladstone, while the domestic focus on shale gas is developing quickly.

AUSTRALIA GETS TOP MARKS FOR OUR

PENSION SYSTEM, BUT WE STILL NEED TO BE PUTTING MORE AWAY.

Australian retirees have got it pretty good, according to a report ranking the lucky

country as having the third-best pension system in the world.

Compulsory superannuation combined with a generous Age Pension helped Australia maintain third place in this year’s Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index. Denmark took f rst place with the Netherlands coming in second.

The UK was ranked ninth while the US came in at 11, not far ahead of Brazil and Mexico in 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Superannuation reforms helped Australia to better its overall score this year, but there is still room to improve, says research author and Mercer senior partner David Knox.

Knox suggests that to improve the system, the pension age should

be raised as life expectancy increases, and older people should be encouraged back into the workforce. He also thinks restrictions should be placed on how people access their superannuation, with a requirement that part of the funds be used as an income stream instead of being accessed as a lump sum.

“What’s put us in third place is our compulsory system that means virtually every employee is covered and has got superannuation, so we’re all saving money for our future,” Knox says. “But the fact that we have no requirement as to what you do with the money, we believe, is a short-coming.”

Knox says the ageing population means Australians need to change their attitudes towards retirement and businesses need to develop more f exible workplaces to take advantage of the skills older workers have to offer.

“We’re not suggesting you work until you drop and you also have to recognise that blue collar workers may well be burnt out, but the community needs to recognise that we need to be a bit more f exible about how we retire people,” Knox says.

“We’ve got a lot of people who are going to retire in the next 10 years and the economy can’t withstand the sudden reduction of that workforce, so we have to f nd ways to ensure they gradually retire. It’s all about people recognising the issue of the ageing population, recognising that we all need to do something about it and with a little bit of imaginative thinking, it’s possible for people to work in a part-time capacity.”

The Index ranks 20 countries and covers 55 per cent of the world’s population. AAP

Today’s young workers can expect to have an average $1.1 million in superannuation when they retire, but it won’t be enough to maintain a comfortable post-work lifestyle.

New research by Deloitte has found a 30-year-old worker on an average salary of $60,000 a year will have an estimated $1.1 million in super by the time he or she turns 65 in 2048. However, Deloitte superannuation lead partner Russell Mason says that sort of money will sustain a comfortable retirement only until age 77.

The million-plus balance will allow someone to live a modest life – devoid of such indulgences as overseas holidays, a nice car and regular eating out – till age 94.

“To afford a comfortable retirement standard covering life expectancy, a current 30-year-old male would need a retirement benef t in 2048 of $1.58 million and a female $1.76 million,” Mason says.

To achieve such a balance, today’s 30-year-olds would need to make additional contributions to super beyond the employer contribution, with men putting in another 5.4 per cent on top of their current rate and women adding an extra 7.5 per cent.

The Deloitte report, Dynamics of the Australian Superannuation System – the Next 20 Years, found Australia’s super system will grow from $1.6 trillion in total assets today to $7.6 trillion by 2033. Driving the growth will be the increase in the superannuation guarantee from 9.25 per cent to 12 per cent and the rise in investment returns.

The Abbott Government’s proposed two-year delay to the increase in the super rate would reduce total value by $80 billion – one per cent – over the period.

Deloitte warns that despite the growth in super, the system may not provide a secure retirement for many Australians. “Today’s average 65-year-old Australian will not have enough superannuation to fully fund his, and particularly her, life expectancy,” Mason says. AAP

VIVA MEXICO!Hot 91.1 FM breakfast host Todd Widdicombe gives his opinion on the best brews of the week.

I’m no philosopher, but it’s fair to say that in wine you’ll f nd wisdom, in beer there is freedom and in water, there’s bacteria.

Think Bali, baby. One in three Aussies still cops a nasty dose of Bali belly when they holiday in Indo. Naturally, it stems from drinking the water when you shouldn’t, or from having ice in your bourbon to wash down the 19 Bintangs you inhaled around the resort pool that arvo.

My traveller’s tip for those headed to Bali is to stick strictly to beers and ice-less cocktails and def nitely give salad a miss too. Yep they wash the leaves in water. I’d be swerving the green like Clive Palmer swerves jogging.

I’ve been trying to get f t for summer – I’m built for comfort not for speed – so I’ve been trying a new thing called exercise. Frankly, it’s overrated.

To make f tness fun, I’ve started drinking white rum while I train – I call it Bacardio. I know, right; move over Michelle Bridges, Toddy’s got this.

To be honest, there’s more chance of Miley Cyrus putting a pair of pants on between now and Christmas than there is of me doing too much jogging.

Here’s something new though: in a bid to shed a few kegs I’ve started cooking with wine. I even put it in the food sometimes. But of course, all this is no substitute for knocking the top off a cold, frothy chop at the end of a long, hard morning.

CERVEZA PACIFICO CLARA 355ML, 4.4% AVNORTH SHORE TAVERN

This week, I’m stoked to share with you a brew that’s made its debut inside my top f ve “unfeasibly drinkable beers for summer 2013/2014”.

In the great tradition of Corona comes the Cerveza Pacif co Clara. Known around the world simply as Pacif co, this Mexican pilsner-style beer hails from the Pacif c coast of Mexico and was f rst brewed in 1900 by a bunch of nutty Germans. That makes it, I believe, a bona f de Ocktoberfest beer. Wunderbar!

It’s a bright, aromatic, refreshingly crisp and zesty beer that goes well with everything (Thai food, Italian, Chinese, Cornf akes). Unlike Corona and Sol, I f nd you can drink this little number fruit-free. Not that there’s anything wrong with lime in beer, it keeps

the scurvy away. The Pacif co comes up

trumps with every joyous mouthful. Hasta pronto to the bottlo amigo to have a crack at this little ripper tonight! I give the Pacif co a red hot four out of f ve stars.

They call it a ‘global’ car. How else could you describe a machine designed in the US

by a group of Aussies, built in Korea but including components made in Germany and Japan, sold in more than 100 countries and boasting a typically American name?

Holden’s Malibu has certainly had its passport stamped a few times before arriving in Australia.

While it was designed in the US,

WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

the Malibu has Aussie fi ngerprints all over it. Michael Simcoe, the man who gave us the Holden Monaro a decade or so ago, oversaw the Malibu’s design team in America – supported by two Australian Holden designers recruited for the task.

No surprise, then, that this mid-sizer more than looks the part. Sitting midway in the Holden range between the all-conquering Cruze and the newly-launched VF Commodore,

the Malibu neatly straddles the pair in terms of size and style.

Roomy enough for a growing family, it offers the economy of four-cylinder petrol or turbo-diesel engines. The petrol engine is made in Korea – where the Aussie version of the Malibu is built – while the diesel comes from Germany. Transmissions for the diesel come from Japan.

A global car indeed.

[ M O T O R I N G ]

The Malibu, known as the Chevrolet Malibu in almost 100 markets outside Australia and New Zealand, effectively replaces the relatively unloved Epica but is light years ahead of its predecessor.

Stylishly presented, nicely built and generously equipped, the Malibu will probably go head to head with the likes of Ford’s imported Mondeo as well as Korea’s Kia Optima and Hyundai i45, and Japan’s Mazda6, Toyota Camry and Nissan’s soon-to-arrive Altima.

Holden boasts the Malibu has been specif cally tuned for Australian roads and driving conditions by the same team that adapted the Aussie version of the Cruze – another member of the General Motors ‘global’ stable, albeit one built here for local buyers.

Believe it or not, the Aussie tuning of the Malibu includes developing special right-hand-drive tyres for the car, which is predominantly sold in left-hand-drive markets overseas.

Holden engineers have become very adept over the years at tweaking imported machines to suit Aussie roads

and driving habits and the Malibu certainly feels like it has benef ted from that process.

The Malibu will be offered in two models – CD and CDX – with a choice of four-cylinder petrol or four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines and a six-speed auto as standard. Prices start from $28,490 with the luxury variant about $5000 more expensive and the diesel adding an additional $4000 premium. That’s a fair mark-up for the oil burner, although early impressions suggest it is probably money well spent.

Holden’s excellent MyLink touch-screen infotainment system is standard on all models and the amount of kit offered suggests solid value for money.

We tested the up-spec CDX that adds leather trim, bigger wheels, heated front seats with eight-way power adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and dual-zone climate-control air.

Our test car was the petrol variant with a not particularly powerful 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that nevertheless gets the job done smoothly and quietly.

<from page 35The six-speed auto, similarly, is a

no-fuss affair. Although we are yet to test it, I’m told the turbo-diesel option is the pick of the Malibu litter.

The Malibu handles and steers impressively. Ride is compliant, road noise is kept to a bare minimum and handling is stable and predictable.

The car’s interior is particularly impressive for this price range.

Instruments are attractively presented and easy to read, highlighted by a very comprehensive trip computer that allows you to scroll through a wide variety of trip and navigation instructions.

The Malibu also features an electronic park brake, which is easy to use and frees up additional storage space in the centre console. That tops off a very thoughtfully designed cockpit with ample storage space.

The Malibu’s also a good looking thing – nicely sculpted outside with enough chrome and big alloy wheels to give it an urbane presence.

It’s def nitely a Holden – the family resemblance is clear – but a worldly-wise Holden.

As cars become more like PCs on wheels, what’s to stop a hacker from taking over yours?

In recent demonstrations, hackers have shown they can slam a car’s brakes at freeway speeds, jerk the steering wheel and even shut down the engine – all from their laptop computers.

All cars and trucks contain anywhere from 20 to 70 computers.

They control everything from the brakes to acceleration to the windows, and are connected to an internal network. A few hackers have found their way into these networks.

In one case they took control of a car’s computers through cellular telephone and Bluetooth connections, the compact disc player and even the tyre-pressure monitoring system.

The ‘hackers’ involved were well-intentioned computer security experts, and it took both groups months to break into the computers.

There have been no real-world cases of a hacker remotely taking over a car.

CAR HACKING FEARS GROW

However, experts say high-tech hijackings will get easier as carmakers give them full internet access and add computer-controlled safety devices that take over driving duties, such as braking or steering in emergencies.

Another possibility: a tech-savvy thief could unlock the doors and drive off with your vehicle or steal phones, packages and other items in the car.

“The more technology they add to the vehicle, the more opportunities there are for that to be abused for nefarious purposes,” says Rich Mogull, CEO of Phoenix-based security research company Securosis.

“Anything with a computer chip in it is vulnerable, history keeps showing us.”

COVER STORY

A little piece of Buderim’s history will be up for grabs this Sunday, when the original 1960s farmhouse at

18 Millgrove Place goes to auction. The property, which was originally built in

1963, has been home to Grace McLuskie Higgs since she and her f rst husband, Mervyn McLuskie, purchased it in 1968. They lived in the home with their two children, Margaret and Gavin, and Grace says the street was very different in those days.

“It wasn’t Millgrove Place then, it was a goat track,” she says. “When my husband Mervyn and I bought here in 1968, we only had the one neighbour down the bottom, on the escarpment.”

That neighbour’s land was subdivided in 2000, and now many more homes line the street.

“So now the street has been transformed – it’s actually the right width of bitumen, and kerbing went in and several varieties of trees,” Grace says. “And, of course, underground power and sewerage.

“With the transformation I’ve got the pleasure of many friendly neighbours. It’s a quiet street.”

Mervyn McLuskie was on the local council for 12 years, and was deputy chairman for six of those. His wife was also very active in the Buderim community – up until recently, Grace was the secretary or treasurer of a number of local associations and groups, including the Buderim War Memorial Community Association, the Buderim Historical Society and the Buderim Local Ambulance Committee.

Grace has seen plenty of growth and change in the Buderim area over the past 50 years.

“I’m particularly proud of our Buderim War Memorial Community Association – that’s unique in Australia according to [social researcher] Hugh

proud of her gardens. “[Over the years] I’ve planted out many camellia bushes, they’ve had some beautiful blooms. And lately I’ve been growing anthuriums – they’re very bright and the f owers are long lasting. I usually do a sheath of those on Anzac Day and they last quite well.”

Grace says she believes the home would be ideal for a young family who could enjoy the gardens and surrounds.

“They would love it,” she says. “It’s a large block, 1012 square metres with

mandarin trees, and usually there’s a lovely crop of mandarins that the neighbours share with me.”

The home will be auctioned by Dave Hawkins and Darren Rix of RE/MAX Realty Excellence this Sunday, October 13 at 11am.

STEP BACK IN TIMEMackay,” she says. “It’s a living war memorial and it’s been going since 1945.”

Mervyn served in the 2/15th Inf. Batt. 9th Div A.I.F. in Tobruk, El Alamein and Syria, and was later wounded in action.

“But he got home here and he was elected on the f rst committee of the Buderim War Memorial Community Centre, later Association,” Grace says.

“It’s done a lot for Buderim. It’s an umbrella committee and it has about 70-something aff liated organisations from Buderim and surrounds.

“My husband was on so many committees – it was a case of when he came home, I was usually heading out the front door to something or other,” she says.

Mervyn passed away in 1979, “at the tender age of 57. Later on I met up with a soldier I’d met after the Kokoda Battle” 40 years previously, Grace says.

Gordon Higgs, who served in 2/16th Inf. Batt. 7th Div. A.I.F. and settled in Western Australia after the war, became Grace’s second husband, and they spent

their years travelling between Queensland and Perth, all the while maintaining the home in Millgrove Place. Gordon passed away in 1993.

Grace is now 88 years old and is moving north to be close to her daughter, meaning her long-time residence is for sale. She says the property is solidly built and “certainly feels like a quiet, safe home”.

“My home is large and comfortable. It’s chamfer board, painted white, and it’s on a brick base,” she says, adding she is particularly

The events raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and

SALE TIME IN AROONA

Camm says “the residents from Aroona have responded extremely well to the invitation to join us in the quest to raise money for this great cause”.

The previous garage sale, held in Diamond Head at Golden Beach, included 25 homes and 600 bargain hunters, and raised more than $900 for the foundation.

“It was just crazy all morning, but with a real positive vibe,” Camm says. “We handed out nearly 250 maps on that day.”

Next Saturday the RE/MAX team will have a marquee in the park on Miranda Street from 6.30am where people can collect a map with street addresses of the participating homes. There will also be a mobile refreshments van selling breakfast and much-needed coffees for visitors and residents.

The REIQ hopes the group of professionals will help shape the future direction of the institute. The institute has been the state’s peak professional association for real estate since 1918 but has now recognised it must seek the input of its youngest members to remain a relevant and accessible organisation for its key stakeholders.

REIQ CEO Anton Kardash says, “Emerging agents and young people in general don’t necessarily have the enthusiasm of their parents toward member-based organisations and associations these days. Networking means something different in today’s society and the challenge for us is to self-ref ect on the value of the

membership, revisit our strategy and understand the needs and concerns of our members in order to maintain our progressiveness.

“I’m enthused by the strength, leadership and innovation I’ve already witnessed in our new YIP advisory group, which includes agents from across South-East Queensland.”

Morgan says she is very excited to have been selected for the group, which will meet regularly with REIQ leadership to discuss industry matters, as well as seek ways to support and educate one another. The group will also host networking and training events throughout the year, with the focus to support other young real estate professionals.

draw to win prizes generously donated by local businesses, and all money collected on or before the day will be donated to Make-A-Wish Australia.

“We are hoping for another successful and fun day for residents and visitors,” Camm says. “Put community and fundraising together and you have a win-win situation really.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GARDEN FESTIVAL?The Buderim Garden Festival is on again, with seven special gardens open across the suburb on October 19 and 20. Buderim Garden Club has more than 200 members and has been operating since 1946, and uses the annual event to showcase some of the fi nest gardens in the area.

Tickets for the garden tour are

available at Old Buderim Post Off ce, Manawee Garden Centre, Buderim News or Next Property Group’s Buderim off ce, or at Buderim War Memorial Hall throughout the weekend. A shuttle bus will operate between open gardens from Memorial Hall for $10.

There will also be competitive displays of quality blooms, grower

exhibits and a variety of plant stalls at venues across Buderim, with light refreshments at Buderim War Memorial Hall and Buderim Craft Cottage.

Next Property Group is sponsoring the event and has donated a piece of artwork, painted by Next owner and founder Loren Wimhurst and valued at $2000, for

one lucky local garden enthusiast. Visitors can get their Buderim Garden Festival booklets stamped at each open garden to receive one entry into the draw, and the winner will be drawn at Buderim War Memorial Hall on October 20 at 2pm.

This solid home has a practical f oor plan which promotes good separation of living, with the parents’ suite at the northern end of the home, away from the other bedrooms. There is also a self-contained, air-conditioned cottage with its own carport, which is ideal for a granny f at, guest accommodation or to generate a rental income. In the main residence, an elegant formal lounge with wood f replace leads into a formal dining room, suited to larger sit-down meals. There are also a tiled family room and an open-plan living area with built-in bar. Central to all four living spaces is the kitchen, which features attractive timber cabinetry and quality stainless steel appliances including a double-drawer dishwasher. A large rear timber deck takes in cooling easterly breezes, panoramic countryside views and ocean glimpses. The property is on almost 2.5 acres of easy-care land with a dam, vegetable gardens, a chook yard, fruit trees, water tanks and a shed with workshop area.

ACROSS DOWN

HOROSCOPESARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Relationships may be strained now, as colleagues or loved ones view your behaviour as being selfish. If you are smart, you’ll choose compromise over confrontation.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Keep on your toes, as the weekend develops in a rather shambolic fashion. If you are flexible and adapt to changing circumstances, then you’ll have a lot of fun along the way.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Prepare to party. You’re in a sociable mood as you share good times with family and friends. You’re also keen to shop up a storm, but try to keep extravagant spending under control.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 There’s bold and impulsive energy about, which could work well for cautious crabs. It may shake you out of your comfort zone and get you moving forwards again.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 This weekend could be a triumph or a disaster, depending on your attitude. You’ve got many ambitious plans – back them up with action and you’ll start to see results.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 It’s a wonderful weekend to entertain at home. But don’t let someone talk you into overcommitting yourself financially. Slow and steady wins the current money race.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 The more creatively you communicate, the more you’ll feel connected to others. With Uranus in your relationship zone, you may be attracted to someone rebellious or unconventional.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 If you expect the weekend to run according to your schedule, you’ll end up frustrated. If you allow room for spontaneous surprises, then you’ll accomplish tasks and have fun.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Let your adventurous spirit run wild, as you tackle a plethora of projects. Make sure your energetic exuberance doesn’t run out before you complete each individual task.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Professional projects may conflict with relationship responsibilities. If you are practical and patient – and communicate clearly – then you’ll steer your way through any problems.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Aquarians are in the mood to surprise others, as you crave emotional excitement and will become bored with your usual routine. Plan something special to keep you entertained.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 You’ve got a lot on your plate this weekend so pace yourself. When it comes to a child or teenager, make sure you follow through on your commitments. A promise is a promise.

4-DAY FORECAST

FISHING REPORTwith Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

Snoring, they say, is quite common in the over 40s but in my view surf ng perfect four- to f ve-foot waves all day might also contribute. This was at the famous left-hand break called Lances, for those in the know. Conditions are perfect so I became familiar with that break. Now we have moved onto Playgrounds with glassy, four-foot perfection. During the trip between these two breaks we managed to jag a couple of f sh, so sashimi and cold Bintang were the order of the day. Now for you guys – not so good I am imagining. No doubt the winds are still onshore with one to two foot of swell. Oh, did I tell you we had a six-foot swell hit in the last couple of days? Now, where’s my beer?

ESTUARY: Mud crabs are on the move from Bli Bli to the mouth of Eudlo and Petrie creeks. Jew are around the pylons on the Bli Bli and motorway bridges with live bait, the top of the tide the best. Catch f athead and whiting from the mouths of Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers upstream using plastics in most colours.SURF: Mudjimba to North Shore Maroochy is returning quality tailor just after dark and the run lasts for about an hour, using pillies. Bream are around the rocks along most beaches with prawns and white herring preferred baits. Whiting and dart are taking beach worms and pippies along Maroochy Beach.OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, check out the close-in reefs of Coolum and The Gneerings for a good feed of mixed reef f sh using small squid and f sh pieces. The Barwon Banks are still active with snapper, parrot and trag jew. The mackerel are around, but some hunting is involved. A recent game f shing comp proved very popular with good results.FRESHWATER: Bass are plentiful at Lake Macdonald near Cooroy. Ice jigs are proving they get the best results. Deep diving lures are returning Mary River cod. Borumba Dam is full and looking a picture with golden perch and bass making up the best catches from the boat ramp to the rock wall with f oated baits or shallow diving lures working well.
