Deadlines!!

Write these down NOW!!! You cannot miss any deadlines!

Now for the details!!!...

Page 5: My Cell Analogy Project Biology. Deadlines!! Write these down NOW!!! You cannot miss any deadlines!

Your school district wants to increase funding for its science labs.

The local business, SG Biotechnology Co., has offered to pay for the construction of

the design with proceeds to go to the school district.

The biotech company wants to get the local community interested in biology and has

decided to have a design contest.

Participants must design an attraction (amusement park, golf course, Santa’s

Workshop, etc.) modeled after either a Plant or Animal cell.

The different cell organelles and structures must be realistically incorporated into the design.

In order for designs to be considered, blueprints, a proposal letter, and a presentation must be submitted to the biotech company by

the proposal deadline.

Directions for the blueprint and model Your design MUST cover the following cell structures:

1. Cell membrane2. Mitochondrion3. Nucleus 4. Nucleolus 5. Nuclear envelope6. Ribosome (originate in nucleolus; free floating and on RER) 7. ER – differentiate between RER and SER8. Golgi apparatus9. Vesicle 10. Vacuole (in plant cell, it is called the Central Vacuole)

AND…. If the design is based on an animal cell, it must also include: centriole and lysosome; If the design is based on a plant cell, it must also include: chloroplast and cell wall

Incorporate the organelle’s structure or function into your design.

Be creative!!

For example, if you did a miniature golf course, the vacuole could be a water

feature; the endoplasmic reticulum could have a tube that transports the ball to

another location.

Make a blueprint (written plans of the project)

•Shows the analogies you will be using along with the layout of the project with the relative shape and size of each organelle. •Make sure the path that leads from one area to the next links organelles whose functions relate to one another.•Your blueprint can be drawn manually or done electronically.  Do not copy information or diagrams from the internet and call it your own!

Create a Model•Once the blueprint is complete, you will create an actual model of your project.

•Your model must include a LABEL for each cell structure or organelle (previously listed) clearly stating the name, function, and analogy for that structure. •Model is neat, professionally done, appears time went into the project, names, title, period and date included on project •Structures/Organelles make sense with analogies and follow a clear path

Page 11: My Cell Analogy Project Biology. Deadlines!! Write these down NOW!!! You cannot miss any deadlines!

Directions for the proposal letter :•Describe your idea behind the design •Explain how the design corresponds to the organelle’s function in the cell •Explain how the park would run and why you placed the organelles in the order you did. •Write the proposal as a business letter proposal. Use professional language; address and sign the letter accordingly. Be persuasive! •Proposal should be 2-3 pgs. long, typed, and double spaced, 12 pt font in Times New Roman

Presentation :•You will pitch your design to the class. Your presentation should be 4-6 minutes, explain your idea and convince us that your design is better than all the others.

•Dress professionally &come prepared! DO NOT READ YOUR LETTER FOR YOUR PRESENTATION!!!!! (Automatic “0” if you do!)

•Creativity - Unique ideas for analogies with imaginative, colorful design
