My Clean India
Building better lives through financial inclusionand sustainable interventions in society
A collection of Ujjivan Community Development Program initiatives
2014 – 15
How can we better a billion lives?
The greatest challenge facing any community development program is the vastness of India herself.
Improving the lives of people in a few villages or towns is just the tip of the iceberg.
And the tip of the iceberg is behind us. Because we have been able to help the underprivileged build better lives, through microfinance.
But how can greater change be made, when India has more people than the US, UK and Canada together?
Reach.
The more communities you can reach out to the easier it is to effect change. And ensure that society as a whole moves forward.
Ujjivan has that reach. Our offices across India are in communities that many other organizations have no access to.
And our employees spend every single day working with the people that most such programs aim to help.
Last year, our 300+ programs changed the lives of more than 2,25,000 Indians for the better.
This is a small selection of the many stories we have to share. Of lives bettered.
Of society, uplifted. And our dream, of a clean India.
2 3
The communities in which we work are very important stakeholders for Ujjivan. Since the year Ujjivan broke even and started to make profit – this was in 2010-11 – the board decided to re-invest a part of that profit in the communities in which our customers live. The best people to decide where this money is utilized are our customers and staff at the branches. And these are usually small but high impact projects which directly benefit the community.
A wide range of projects has been undertaken over the years. Since children’s education has been high on the priority list of our customers, in the early years we focused on upgrading the facilities of Anganwadis – government-supported children’s crèches.
This year we have changed our focus to building toilets especially for the girl child in
schools. This was in response to the Prime Minister’s call for such a program under the Swachh Bharat initiative. While we have undertaken this program, it is important for the local governments to build the supporting infrastructure, like having a sewage clearance system and/or water supply in place to ensure that these toilet facilities are permanent and do not fall into disuse. This is especially true in semi-urban and rural areas. Given the urgency of the need, we have not waited for such infrastructure, but have successfully executed the program last year – and this booklet is a record of the projects undertaken by Ujjivan branches across the country.
Our community development programs help build our bonds with the community over and above the microfinance business we undertake. The regard the community has for Ujjivan was evident during the crisis years of microfinance – where other institutions were shunned, Ujjivan was always held in high esteem.
It is matter of pride for us that the branch team and leadership in each region undertake these projects with a great sense of satisfaction. This is a small contribution by Ujjivan to the communities in which we work to make them better places to live.
Samit Ghosh June 16th, 2015.

Ujjivan North - Letter from the Co-ordinator
Ujjivan North began projects under the banner of ‘Community Development Program’ (CDP) in 2011-12, with the intention of making meaningful contributions to society.
We took a non-traditional approach to begin our initiatives – rather than making program ideas a management decision, we made it a community decision. We approached our customers and spoke to branch staff, asking particularly for suggestions on critical needs that we could address. The consensus was that children in nearby schools were in desperate need of school bags, and it was a void that we knew we could fill. A survey of primary schools in the catchment area helped us identify three in which children were in serious need of support. And, in those three schools, we distributed school bags to children.
After that, we began to widen our reach in North Indian states, with mature branches acting as our starting point. And, as our reach gradually widened, we expanded the scope of our programs as well. We provided government schools with furniture and equipment. Primary healthcare and trauma centres with diagnostic facilities and equipment. Anganwadis with educational toys and learning kits. We constructed bus stops, fenced off transformers, set up street lighting, and much more. In taking these initiatives forward, we have found that government agencies also join hands with us, to help us succeed in our mission.
Our Community Development Programs have had a significant impact on the community, and we have received many appreciation letters – from schools, electricity departments, hospitals, etc.
In FY 2014-15, Ujjivan North organized Community Development Programs in 72 branches, with a focus on construction and renovation of toilets, augmenting water supply and improving sanitation in 52 government girls’ and co-ed schools. Our Managing Director, Samit Ghosh, firmly believes that improving the levels of hygiene and sanitation in girls’ schools will have a visible impact on education itself and help the development of India’s next generation.
And, after 15th August 2014, we decided to align ourselves even more closely to the vision shared by our Honourable Prime Minister, and advised the Community Development Program committee in our branches to work together, to achieve the dream of a better, cleaner, safer India.

Ujjivan East - Letter from the Co-ordinator
In 2010, Ujjivan chose to work towards bettering the communities in which we work and live, under the ‘Community Development Program’ banner. Our Managing Director, Mr. Samit Ghosh, firmly believes that a part of our profits needed to be shared with our customers and the communities in which they lived. Our initial CDP budget was a humble one – Rs. 25,000 per branch. And with that, we began a variety of projects.
In the first year, we distributed school bags and stationery, and purchased books for libraries. In the second year, 2011-12, our focus shifted to Anganwadi schools. To these schools, we distributed benches to keep students comfortable, and blackboards and whiteboards, to make the teachers’ work easier. Besides our initiatives towards fostering education, we also looked at basic necessities in different areas – and constructed tube wells in several areas.
Aditi Biswas
The success of the first two years and the dramatic improvement to the communities we reached out to, resulted in our CDP budgets being doubled for our third year. And, in the next two years, our focus shifted to more ambitious projects. Building sturdy bridges to replace bamboo ones, fencing off schools near highways as a safety measure, constructing roads in hilly terrain, setting up bus stands in remote areas, and making provisions for clean water in remote railway stations – these are a few of the initiatives we turned our attention towards in the East region.
Each of these initiatives was prompted by suggestions from our customers, who were slowly beginning to see the value of community development, as opposed to just self-improvement.
Then, in 2014-15, with the announcement of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, we realigned ourselves internally, with direction from our MD, to work towards meeting the goals of Swachh Bharat. A key focus area was constructing ladies’ toilets in different communities. In the East region alone, we have renovated 200+ toilets in schools and public places alone, benefitting more than 60,000 people every day.
The lack of basic sanitation for women, is one reason that so many girls abandon their education before they graduate. So it has been truly rewarding to have the children admit that, after our interventions, they are happy to attend school.
Being able to see the change goes a long way towards reaffirming our belief in the value of our Community Development Programs. And towards reminding us that a series of small steps towards community upliftment actually helps build a cleaner India.

Ujjivan West - Letter from the Co-ordinator
Ujjivan’s Community Development Programs are about giving back. Our customers have made us successful and we believe that it is important for us to share this success with the communities in which we operate.
So, each of our initiatives is the result of careful consideration and recommendations from our CDP Committee – which typically include sanitation, healthcare, education, and construction-oriented initiatives. And, while these are focussed programs, aimed at a single community or institution at a time, the positive impact on the community has been profound.
In 2014-15, the initiatives of Ujjivan West were aligned with the vision of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Taking up sanitation as our primary focus for the year, we set out to help school students benefit from better hygeine, with special emphasis on female students.
We chose 37 schools in the West region – and laid plans for renovating existing toilets or constructing new ones where required; ensuring effective operation of basic sanitation facilities; and providing a supply of clean water. And, by the end of 2014-15, we are proud to have achieved our goal, and of having contributed in our way to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’s vision of a cleaner India.

Ujjivan South- Letter from the Co-ordinator
Whenever we organize a Community Development Program in the South, smiling faces are everywhere – both inside Ujjivan and outside. This, above everything else, is our true motivation to keep contributing to the communities in which we operate.
And that motivation was in full strength this year, as we focused our effort around the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan mission. With better sanitation as our goal, we set out to construct toilets in areas or institutions that were in desperate need of them; promote sanitation programs in different areas; and more.
Jansaidavali Shaik
In 2014-15, Ujjivan South conducted 98 CDPs– of which 78 were toilet constructions or renovations in government schools, benefitting more than 47,000 students, from Nursery to Class X. A part of our success stems from the fact that school children have shown a great deal of interest in understanding the importance of maintaining proper hygiene.
Below is a summary of the programs that we have conducted in the previous year, setting the stage for even greater success in 2015-16.

This page marks the end of this collection. But not of our work with our communities.
Five years of community developmentacross the country, has shown us that
bringing positive change to the underprivileged, also brings joy to their lives.
So as we stride towards our tenth yearwe consider once more, the question
we posed at the beginning of this book.
How can we bring joy to a billion lives?Reach more? And better more lives?
We have seen the difference that cleaner, greener, happier communities can make.
And we know also, that our work for themand our plans for the future,
have only just begun to bear fruit.
