CA REVIEW NOVEMBER 3

While Fall in Georgia has some of the finest driving experiences of the year, I wish I couldsay the same about the season that follows it. Cold weather, rain and sometimes snow andslush are not the dreams of many Corvette owners I know. I spent five Minnesota winterswith my 67 Corvette, and what I learned is that they’re not ideal winter cars. So my car, likemost in the Frozen North, stayed inside a very cold garage, safely protected from saltedroads and skidding vehicles. Even in mild Georgia, I tend to drive some other car and leavethe Corvettes to hibernate most of the season. This year, 2018, has treated us to a month ormore of extra Summer. But surely enough, the cold will show up for us and our cars.

But, many of us want to/have to drive our Corvettes year ‘round. So what must happen todo it right takes time, energy and no procrastination. An oil and filter change and coolantcondition check is top of the list. Late Corvettes are so much more simple to winterizebecause the Dexcool coolant is supposed to last about five years, there are very few lubefittings and your handy instrument gauges will tell you how much oil life you have remaining. About the only annoying tendency is for the four tire pressure readings to send an alert iftire pressures drop below 22-25 pounds, usually due to an ambient temperature drop in theweather. So, a good tire pressure gauge and a few extra pounds of air/nitrogen is prudentbefore the winter hits and you really don’t want to do that when it’s that cold. As for me, withthe fear and dread of Minnesota winters still fresh in my mind, all of the Corvettes and anyother car that will be laid up for a while, I do a lube service (oil/filter/grease gun) in the fall, just out of habit. Maybe some StaBil in a full fuel tank, too. Tires will be visibly checked andpressures put where they should be.

While under the cars, everything is looked at, including anything that might have started todrip. I can do two Corvettes in the time it takes to do an old car: the Packard has 28 lubefittings and the drop-in oil filter cartridge always makes a mess. But, with each of the cars Ihave to remember to record what I’ve done in the family service book with descriptions, dateand mileage. Otherwise, guilt and worry will follow as surely as the thaw follows the frost.

So, as you enjoy the Fall colors and other Corvette delights, do think a bit forward topreserving your car’s wellbeing by not putting things off until the weather makes it impossibleor uncomfortable. In past years, older cars needed much more attention than our modernones do. But, because of the care they were given, some of the cars we admire and cherishmost are still with us. Like machines and friends, treat them with respect and care and they’llreturn the favor in multiples. Here’s hoping that others treat us the same way. Happy driving in a reliable friend with aChevy label on it!

Sometimes I have to just take on the persona ofthat common cartoon character, dressed in a shaggyrobe, looking sad with a sign that says “Repent, theEnd is Near!”

While I am not implying that any end is near, I dowant my sign, directed at Corvette owners, to say“Hurry Up, Winter is Coming!”

Inscribed Bricks

The National Corvette Museum has offered for many years the opportunityfor an individual or group to contribute to the Museum and at the same timehave a brick inscribed with their name and additional information of yourchoosing that is installed permanently at the Museum. There are four differentbricks the Museum offers and additional brick options for the Motor Sports Park.

The Walk of Fame bricks come in three sizes and are installed outdoors onthe sidewalks leading to the Museum entrances. There is room for symbols andwords/names which varies with the brick size. There are numerous brickexisting today in this category and you can get an idea of what is possible bywalking around outdoors on your next Museum visit.

Hexagon Bricks are located indoors on Corvette Boulevard, the large areawhere the cars being delivered to new owners are displayed. These bricks areall the same large size and can be inscribed with C1 through C7 logos plus linesof text. I did one of these a few years ago which ended up being just outside theentrance to the Corvette Store. It is fun to be able to walk by it each time I visitthe Museum.

The Flint Brick Wall is inside the Museum display area and as the nameimplies is constructed from bricks which were once part of the Flint, Michiganassembly plant where the first ’53 Corvettes were made. A metal plate will beattached to a brick with your name inscribed on it if you choose this option.

The Custom Entry Way Tile option are large tiles that will be locatedoutdoors leading up to the entryway to the Museums original main doors. These can have custom artwork as well as lines of text placed on them. There are several similar optional bricks that can be inscribed and placed at theMotor Sports Park as well.

If you would like to have your name on one of these or have a friend or familymember you would like to recognize, you can review all the options in moredetail at the NCM web site. This is a good way to recognize a person,(Christmas is coming up!), and at the same time help to support the Museumplus have some tax incentive as well.

November Competition Report – Don Parks, VP-Competition

Past Events

Sept 29-30 -- Grissom AFB, IN - Back to back weekends in Peru, IN at GrissomAFB! This weekend was supposed to be held in Indianapolis but, due to latescheduling issues, that event site was not available. So the 14 low speedautocrosses were moved up to Grissom. The number of competitors was down dueto multiple 14-event weekends across the nation - only 31 on Saturday and 34 onSunday. We had no one in our class but Betty did have a sub-group and was able toearn 6 FTDs. It was apparent that it was time for tires before the next weekend...Sept 30 -- Newport, TN - The Southeast Region hosted Bracket Drags in Newport,TN by East TN Corvette Club. As I understand, the weather was good and fiercegrudge-match competition prevailed! Attendance was low with only 8 competitorsbut everyone had a great time!Oct 6-7 -- Rantoul, IL - Betty and I ventured back to Rantoul, IL for the MidwestRegion's Fundraiser 10-event weekend. It was yet another weekend with lower thanusual participation with 37 - the lower number of events contributed to that level ofcompetitors. The weather was not our friend on Saturday - except that we had newtires!! The course was quite wet until the rain stopped in the afternoon. I earnedsecond place finishes while Betty earned 5 FTDs and 3 class wins. This was our lastweekend traveling north - the southern tour start the next week!Oct 13-14 -- Melbourne, FL - Hurricane Michael might have just rolled throughFlorida but Melbourne was dry and picture perfect! We returned to the AmericanMuscle Car Museum facility - what an awesome place!! The course was quick andchallenging. I earned 2nd place behind a local competitor with lots of experience onthe course. Betty had no one in her class but did have a sub-group on Saturday. She earned 13 FTDs for the weekend!

CA REVIEW NOVEMBER 8

November Competition Report – Don Parks, VP-Competition The ride home from Melbourne was NOT ideal for us. As we approached the restarea on I-475, most of the idiot lights popped up on the truck's dash so we pulled offthe road to investigate - all belts intact, oil fine - but when we cranked the truck withthe hood open, a strange (not good) sound could be heard. We traveled to the nextexit, got a room for the night and called AAA. The truck was towed to a garage inMacon to be diagnosed for repairs. Monday morning the verdict was terminal...engineneeded replacement. We rented a U-haul truck, unloaded everything from the truckinto it, then loaded the trailer with Jack's Corvette and headed home to ponder ouroptions. After consulting several experts (including the Gowins/Fulcher), we opted tohave the engine repaired rather than replaced and towed to North GA Corvettes.Oct 20-21 -- Green Cove Springs, FL - Without a replacement tow vehicle, we passedon these events in Florida. Instead, we convinced Betty's brother to leave his home insouth Georgia that had no power thanks to Hurricane Michael and visit us. Betty hadpreviously tried to find him a hotel but nothing was available within a 150+ mile radius. After a week of electricity, water and ample food in Roswell, her brother returnedhome when his power was finally restored. During that week, the diagnosis on the truck came in - appears that the lifterswere the problem as the #1 had collapsed. The plan to replace all of them meant itwould be a week before the truck would be ready to roll. With that in mind, Corky Keyallowed us to borrow his Suburban so we could be Florida-bound!Oct 27-28 -- Brooksville, FL - The former Hernando County Airport in Brookville, FLwas the site for 14 low speed events. The weather was perfect; the competition wasfierce!! Saturday's course was quite confusing as extra cones & a course from theSheriff's office (which were NOT part of our course) were still standing on the runway.I opted NOT to run that course. Sunday's course was much better and fun to run (plusthe Sheriff's course had been removed!). Neither Betty nor me had anyone in ourclass or sub-group so we were matched against the C-7s for overall points...no FTDsfor us!Upcoming Events – As the competition season winds down, here's a list of goodautocross events to consider: Nov 3-4 14 Low Speed Shelbyville, TN* Nov 17-18 14 Low Speed Green Cove Springs, FL Nov 24-25 12 High Speed Roebling Road Raceway*

* represent Southeast Region events (participation in those events earns club points)

ROAD TRIP!!THE HUTCHISONS’

MOUNTAIN CABIN RETREAT

Mountain Trip 10, 2018Twenty five CA members and one new CA pup, Smokey Rotundi, enjoyed an outing to theHutchinson’s lovely cabin in the north Georgia mountains on Saturday October 27. Westopped at Jaemore farms and loaded up on fresh produce on our way up. Rain threatenedbut held off. The leaves were just beginning to turn.

Many thanks to Mickey and Jim for opening their lovely home to us again, and to the Zrolkasfor helping them get ready for us!Amy P —-–-––-––-––-–-–-––-––-––-–----–-–-–-–-----–-–-----–-–-----–-–– —-—––-–-–-–-–----–-–-–-–------–-––-––-–-----–-–-----–-–-–-–-—-Vette Cabin 2018Warm temperatures and an overcast sky spitting occasional raindrops could not discourageenthusiastic Corvette “roadies” from finding the Hutchinson mountain cabin for our annualBBQ feast. Outstanding effort by Bob and Pat Zrolka were needed to get everything set-upfor this event, and its breakdown as well. This was a time to catch up with each other beyondwhat our monthly meetings allow enhanced by ample servings of famed Mickey Pigs BBQand their tasty sides washed down by ample amounts of Iced tea.We thought we had a masked invader for a few moments before discovering that it was DanNugent on his really big motorcycle and in full helmeted cycle traveling dress. Dan had beendoing a double this day with his cycling buddies just prior to our get together. While we of-fered transportation from the parking area up to the cabin, many elected to walk, bypassingthe elderly golf cart and its equally elder driver. Without mentioning names, several probablyregretted that decision when the uphill climb verified their absence from recent physical activ-ity. Fortunately, everyone made it without incident.Amy Parker approved our attendance role which this year included Rob McLean, who wasmaking his initial cabin journey and was filled in on many area details by Mickey H. With foodtime approaching, Barbara Rotondi had to secure her wonderful four-legged friend who waseagerly seeking the source of the aroma drifting through the air. However, Barb did give herfrisky friend special treats easing, at least a little, the necessary separation from the Q.Following tradition, David Morgan blessed our food which was then eagerly consumed byhungry Vetters. After allowing an adequate time period for digestion and additional conversa-tion, everyone drifted down the hill to their parked vehicles as the trek home began. It wasgreat to have so many folks willing to make the drive up to the North Georgia mountainsonce more. Many thanks, - Mickey and Jim

REAR SEAT CORVETTE MYTH OR NOTBy Dan Nugent

REAR SEAT CORVETTE MYTH OR NOT

As some of you know, I have a rear seat 1963 Split Window Corvette that I take to localshows that becomes a curiosity and prompts questions from the spectators. Comments like“That is the first 4 seat Sting Ray I have seen. How many did they make?” or “That must bea fake” or “I don’t like the looks of the rear seat” etc. So what is the true story? There is a very interesting story behind the Corvette XP-796 that was developed in early1962 before the release of the famous 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. General Motors had beenlosing business to Ford who had sold 3 times as many four-seat Thunderbirds as theirdiscontinued 2 seat 1957 model leaving Corvette as the only production American sportscar. The Chevrolet General Manager, Ed Cole wanted to see if Corvette could develop afour-seat prototype and instructed Design Chief Bill Mitchell to design and build it in a hurry. The car needed to be stretched by about 10 inches and the doors lengthened toaccommodate ingress/egress for the back seat. The Sting Ray’s iconic roof was raised andlengthened for rear seat headroom. Having carefully finessed the subtle proportions of thenew 2 seat Sting Ray, Larry Shinoda and his design team hated the project. The prototypewas completed in January 1962. It was compared to the T-Bird that had a longer wheelbase and weighed 4,132 pounds. GM Chairman, Jack Gordon wanted to get in the car andreportedly got stuck in the back seat because the seat back latches “accidently” locked.Engineers had to unbolt the passenger seat to get him out. Gordon stormed off, and thatwas the end of the four seater Sting Ray. Eventually it was crushed and few records of itremain.

So how did I get a back seat for my Sting Ray? While a member of Bay State CorvetteClub 45 years ago, a friend told me about an aftermarket rear seat accessory kit for the Mid-Year Corvette coupes. He knew someone that had one and didn’t use it. It happened tomatch my black upholstery vinyl pleats and could be installed without special hardware. So Ibought it for $50 thinking that it would be a nice seat for my two little girls who loved riding inthe back of the car on Corvette rallies and other events. They had their dolls, toys, andblankets for a “cozy nest”. The seat didn’t stay in the car very long because the girls werebumping their heads on the split windows and wanted to be able to stretch out in the back. Inretrospect, I realized that it was dangerous without seat belts, although they were notrequired back then.I have kept the seat as a curiosity and unique accessory. I put it in place when I take it tosome shows. The comments and questions makes it an opportunity to talk about oldCorvettes. Now you know “the rest of the story”!

Carolina Mountain Cruise

On Oct 26 to the 28th I joined Amazing Corvettes on a cruise of theCarolina Mountains specifically sections of road called The Diamondbackand The Devil’s Whip which runs alongside of The Blue Ridge Parkway off ofHighway 226 and 226A. We met in Flowery Branch GA and set off 39enthusiast in 19 Corvettes, under minor rain which stayed with us until wereached the Comfort Inn Motel in Marion NC.

The next morning we started our trek up to the top of Mount Mitchelgoing from 54 degrees to 35 degrees at the top and encountered high windsand a sideways sleet storm which we walked through to reach our restaurantfor lunch. After lunch we headed for Little Switzerland where we did somesightseeing and then returned back to Marion NC. On the way we stopped atLinville Falls Winery In Newland NC for a tasting which was very enjoyable. Sunday morning brought overcast sky's as we headed back home toGeorgia in individual groups. Compared to Tail of the Dragon, these roads were more tastier, less trafficand much longer. It was defiantly well worth the distance traveled.

Great job organizing the cruise by Steve and Brenda Bracken.

It is the 12th Driver Championship for CorvetteRacing and 13th Team title in the program’s

20-year history.

“Congratulations to Antonio, Jan and the No. 3 Corvette C7.R team onclinching the GTLM Driver Championship. This team never gave up all season todeliver our 12th Driver title for Corvette Racing over 20 seasons of competition,”said Mark Reuss, GM Executive Vice President and President Global ProductGroup and Cadillac. “And congratulations to Corvette Racing and Pratt & Miller ontheir 13th Team Championship. They prepared a race car that delivered consis-tent performance and that great combination of power, durability and efficiency.”

Both Corvettes showed race-winning pace throughout the day and into thenight as both cars led multiple times in the 10 hours. But pit work ultimately provedto play a huge role.

The No. 4 pit crew got Milner out ahead of the No. 3 Corvette’s lone remainingchampionship contender on his final pit stop with 48 minutes to go. That was onlyhalf the story, however.

The No. 3 Corvette crew needed just five-and-a-half minutes to repair its C7.Rafter a crash with Garcia at the wheel following a pit stop with less than threehours to go. Among other items, the crew replaced the Corvette’s nose, frontfender and engine floor in lightning quick speed to keep the No. 3 C7.R in the raceand in the championship hunt.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R – GTLMDRIVER CHAMPION:

“It was definitely a tough race. From Lap 1, I went in the lead and every time I wasin the car I was going for it instead of holding position. It probably went from oneof my best races of my career to the most embarrassing moment of my career.

But that means Team Chevy and Corvette Racing did all the prep work before thisrace and allowed us to come back from that.

CA REVIEW NOVEMBER 42

Thank you to the 4 car for keeping the pressure up on the 67 car, which hadto go for the win for the (championship) result. That’s part of this championship –

the 4 car keeping the pressure up at the end. I’m very happy. It will take me a littlebit to forget that mistake, but I’m very happy for the whole team.”

JAN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SIRIUS XM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R –GTLM DRIVER CHAMPION:

“The way it turned out, the way the 4 car went in there and really put pres-sure on changed things around. Fantastic. Such a massive team effort to make

this happen. I’m so proud to be a part of this. We had a good car and were goingto be right there in the mix and the pit exit stuff happened and put everything on its

head. It looked like we were out of it, trying to figure out how to still make it hap-pen. I think what really did it was the 4 car got sent super aggressively and

changed the balance of things. Obviously the 4 car went for the win but they knewwhy they were doing it. It turned things in our favor.”

OLIVER GAVIN, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SIRIUS XM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R –SECOND PLACE IN GTLM RACE, THIRD IN GTLM DRIVER CHAMPIONSHIP:

“It’s been another amazing performance by Corvette Racing. You look at allthe stints by Tommy (Milner), Marcel (Fässler) or myself and the same on the 3car, it was just exceptional. The strategy, the way the guys worked together wasjust amazing. Then Antonio (Garcia) had his problem and I’ve never seen theguys work so well together to get the 3 car back out there in a short amount oftime. It was just exceptional. Everybody had such great team spirit, team harmonyand everybody was pulling for that championship. Us getting third in the champi-onship was quite a result for Tommy and myself, so I’m very happy with today.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SIRIUS XM CHEVROLET COR-VETTE C7.R – SECOND PLACE IN GTLM RACE, THIRD IN GTLM

DRIVER CHAMPIONSHIP:

“We can be super proud of our effort today. The car was really good all race long.Pit stops, strategy, Olly and Marcel did great jobs in the car. What it came down totoday was I think we had the car to win, we had the pace to win, but right toward

the end I got stuck behind the Ford and I lost 8-10 seconds on the Porsche. A littleunfortunate, but I wanted to be careful and not have any contact or interferencewith the Porsche on my part. In any case, everyone in the class did an awesome

job. In the race we were fifth, then eighth, then sixth, and all over the place. Reallyimpressive driving by everyone. I really wanted to win today but we can be happywith second place, and third in the championship was a bit of a stretch for us com-

ing in. Good race today from all the guys on the 4 car to give us super pit stopsand strategy.”

MARCEL FÄSSLER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SIRIUS XM CHEVROLET COR-VETTE C7.R – SECOND PLACE IN GTLM RACE:

“My last podium finish was here in 2016, so I’m really happy and proud of theteam. My first stint in the 3 car was a little tough and then in the 4 car I had a pret-ty good stint in the beginning. I congratulate the 3 car for the championship. It wasan awesome job today, and thanks to Corvette Racing for its trust in me to driveboth cars. The crew made this podium happen because they had an awesome pitstop in the end that got the 4 car out ahead of the others. For me, it was a niceend-of-season race and making the podium made for a really good day. I will dothis again for Corvette Racing any time again.”
