Outline of the lesson
Slides 3 - 4 Introduce the session with the lesson objectives along with the key words pupils will hear and use.
Starter -slides 5 - 6
Have pupils share what they think ‘healthy’ means. Record their ideas on a mind map. Summarise that being healthy is about taking care of our bodies by eating well and being active.
Main – slides 7 - 14
Watch the clip ‘What humans need to stay to stay healthy’ (https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/articles/zxvkd2p). Ask pupils to share examples of suggestions the video gave for keeping healthy. Then, discuss the importance of a balanced diet, physical activity, feeling good, sleep and hygiene to keeping healthy. Explore the reasons why we should keep healthy. Have pupils suggest their own reasons. Discuss whether any reason for keeping healthy is more important than the others. Agree that all the reasons are equally important: we need to look after both our bodies and minds. Emphasise the importance of balance in all things.
Task: Create a class ‘Keeping Healthy’ booklet. Split the class into five groups and have each group complete an information page. There should be a page for each ‘keeping healthy’ example: eating, sleeping, exercise, hygiene and feeling good. Explain that each page should include examples of ways they can achieve that objective and explanations of how it helps to keep them healthy.
Plenary –slide 15
Have each group present their page to the class.
Agree that we all know a little more about keeping healthy. Ask the pupils to set themselves a ‘keeping healthy goal’ for the next week. For example: going to bed 20 minutes earlier, drinking more water, being more positive, washing hands more carefully …

What does healthy mean?
Being healthy means taking care of your body by eating well and being active.
Keeping healthy - eating
We can keep healthy by eating a balanced diet. A balanced diet means eating lots of different types of healthy foods, for example: fruit, vegetables, fish, grains, nuts, dairy and lean meat. Every now and then, we can also have a treat but we should try not to eat too
many of these.
Keeping healthy – exercise
Exercise helps us to keep healthy. It makes our heart, lungs, bones and muscles stronger.
Keeping healthy – feeling good
We also need to keep our minds healthy. We can do this by being positive and having fun. By learning to understand our feelings, we
can learn how to feel good but also know when to ask for help if things get hard.
Keeping healthy – sleep
We can even keep healthy by sleeping. We need to sleep so that our body and our brain can have a rest. Also, sleep helps our
bodies to grow.
Keeping healthy – hygiene
We can keep healthy by looking after our personal hygiene. We need to keep our bodies clean to get rid of germs because germs
can make us ill.
Why do we need to keep healthy?
To give us lots of energy.
To help prevent illness.
To have a positive mind.
To help us grow.
To keep us strong.
To look good and feel better.
Are any of these reasons
more important than
the others?
