IES without coaching.

Well, its been a long time I wrote a post. In railways its lots of traveling made

worse with bad wi fi connection almost everywhere.

I have been getting a lots o f i nquiries about clearing IES without coaching so

here we are. Though it is difficult to imagine how would you stand a

chance when everybody has coaching advantage but let me tell you its not

impossible.

But you gotta be real seriou s abou t it. In my batch I have few guys who cleared

ies with their college and that too with ranks under top 20. We even have 5

marine engineers who passed it with very good rank. Even people from very

normal unknown unheard colleges are here training with me. So where ever youare you should not think you don't stand a chance. The point is dedication and

time. I really believe that if you get serious about it early in your second year or

third year or fourth year and you make sincere efforts you have much better

chance to clear it compared to those who are taking time off and coaching. They

have to deal with certain mental pressure hard living conditions and almost no

time for self study. In addition it as very costly to pay coaching fees and living in

Delhi sarai area. So my point is if you are clear you want to go for i t you don't

need to wait to join coaching to start your studies. You can do it in your college

time studying reasonably regularly and taking studies seriously instead of

resorting to last minute measures. I hope following points would help

1. Download and take a print of IES syllabus and stick it on wall where you can

see it regularly remembering your dream. Kulkarni sir use to say that if you

have learnt syllabus by heart your work is half done.

2.What ever su bjects you are studyin g in your s emester match them with

syllabus topics and do them well. You don't need to read foreign author books to

clear IES but stay away from R k Jain sort of books too. I find khurmi, d s

kumar, r k rajput books quite good.

3. Make su re you maintain notes copy and formula copy side by side. At this

moment you might not see their importance but they will come very handy when

you start forgetting things, revising subjects in short time etc. Please please I am

begging you take it very seriously to make rereadable notes. Its the only thing

that matters is revise revise revise no matter how much of sharp brain you are.

4. You might not understand e verything in one go. It is very usual to take 4 to 5

readings of a topic at different point of time before you reasonably understand it. I am saying reasonably because their might still be questions you won't have

a clue about. Its normal, you don't need to be exceptionally bright to clear IES.

5. Try to do previous year questions topic wise they will appropriately challenge

you and give you an idea about what is expected out of you. Again not every

question in that paper is needed to be solved by you. Paper is a mix of easy ,

mixed and hard questions. Try to raise your level but do not get disheartened by

difficult questions.

6. Set aside 2 to 4 hours for this prep. Study the subjects coming in the semester

seriously this would help you to get good grades too. But try to revise previous

subjects too. You might be losing some fun time or sleep time but trust me its an

investment you are making towards future happiness which is far more worthy

and valuable.

7. Once you decide to go for it make sure every moment is spent to come more

near to your dream.

You know what I wished someone gave me this aforementioned advice when I

was college. I just wasted my time there with friends whom I don't talk to any

more. I feel really sad when I see college people in a bubble. I want to tell then so

badly "You are responsible for your future and good things don't magically

come to you". I had chats with lots of people here IES IAS both. They all claim

coaching days were worst time of their lives. Dropping an year, wasting parents

money, listening curses from them, feeling lows often, fear of non selection,

insecurity about future etc etc takes a huge toll emotionally and confidence

wise.And entering govt service at later age makes a huge difference in your

promotions and sen iority too. Every year sin ce you r birth almost determine s the

altitude you will reach in govt service,

You are in college with best years ahead of you. If you make dedicated efforts

you can do it.

So gu ys best of luck and kindly let me kn ow you are reading it and suggest anytopics you want me to write about not technical though. I have forgotten all

about them.

Yes some f aculties come from Delhi on weekdays. They t ake classes

For very long duration 10 to 12 hours.

hello...I have been waiting for your post since long time..may be because it connects to whoever is

going through or went through a phase of uncertainty while preparing for...

I left my job after working for 3 years in a gud firm... went to delhi without knowing much about

the type of competition..worked hard as everybody does....then starts a series of failure for one

and half year...i didnt give up...then i got 1st interview call..then 2nd...3....8 in a row...everywhere

inerviewer used to ask the same question ..why did you leave your job working in a gud cmpny

with such handsome salary...everytime i tried to justify them but cud nt satisfy t hem..then starts a

series of rejection..

I used to think why dont they encourage me that after 3 years gap i started again from scratch (as i

never though of working in a govt organisation ...i never looked back to books after leaving

college) and I am ready for competition...

Plz give your inputs how to justify them...may help many,,

didnt stop my prep after getting a job...gave a try to IES last year..missed a call by few margin..

Trust me I can understand your frustrations and emotional turmoil.

Interviewers ask this question to make you nervous so that they can break your shield

of confidence. If you reply very confidently saying you wanted to work for a govt

company for recognition and respects it brings or any other reason they would stop

bugging you. Catch here is not get ting nervous not the answer.

And anyone who wishes for good future takes risk, and so have you. Don't get

disoriented at last time. I hope you are giving ies 2014. If not please prepare for a

month and take the exam.

I have a very strong belief that before we get a success we feel extremely frustrated for

the very last time. Its like night is darkest before dawn. It depends on us whether we

choose to keep walking on the path or lose hope.

Please keep your self together and decide to give everything to Ies 2014 so you don't

think in exam only if you had studied a bit more your could have got better marks or

better r ank.

I am on same track as you were. Left job after 2.75 years of good job and currently join

coaching for IES. I think a honest and confident reply would be best for you. Just say I

want to dedicate 30 years of my life to a job where I f eel can contribute maximum to my

country.

i want a advice from u tat ,if we go for self study fr preparion of gate..then wat should b ethe

schedule ,how we should manage our tym as irregularity sitting al tym at home do makes u lazy n

Hello mam,

I have been reading your blog since last 1 year. I am a 2012 passout and then i prepared for Gate-

13 by joining made easy weekend batch. Got AIR- 3838 in gate 2013..didn't join Mtech as i was not

sure that it was my 100% attempt. Although interview calls in PSUs started coming just after

Gate-13. I joined Weekend batch again for GATE-14 and IES in my target. Now in April I gave

interview for EPIL, went there highly confident. I am a bit rough guy, one who will fight on his

points..so I tried to take an INTERVIEWER down in a Heat transfer concept and rest of the panel

made fun of him. Anyways only 10 people were called for 2 posts and even topper of written didn't

get selected! They didn't even declare results. My father kept banging there desks and they kepttelling lies that it will be out soon. Later after 3 months they told that we gave joining to 2

candidates 1 week after the Interview. A clear cut case of fraud. Nevermind it was not a good PSU

so i didn't took that heavily. Meanwhile struck by DENGUE in Delhi which ripped away my 20

days. My second interview was SAIL..it went really well "as if I was taking their Interview"..GDs

went really nice. P eople in my bat ch were sure t hat i was thro ugh. I would give it a 9/10 interview.

Others were interviewed 4-7 mins..mine went on for 20 minutes. After that one in HAL also.. then

i came back and sat down to study hard on 15 Dec for GATE-14. I had plenty time of 2 months to

revise. I had studied everything and done every question except "Mechanics" which madeeasy

doesn't teach. I prepared all my short notes in advanced and probably gave my best shot..will say

90% of what i am capable of exhausting myself. GATE-14 AIR- 2438.. another dissapointment.

After gate i had some trouble with my shoulder due t o over-exhaustion during last 2 months o f

GATE almost 12 hrs daily. So couldn't study for 2 months due to a clot in shoulder and

physiotherapy sessions. Gate dissapointment added to misery and as a result i have almost ruined

IES-14 attempt. Otherwise a fool would be writing this on 16th june.

Just before GATE another jolt struck me. SAIL result came out and my name was not on that list. I

kills to find a PDF search say "sorry no match found".. It came just 15 days before gate-14 and that

morning i was sitting and doing Vibrations and within 10 mins i collected myself up and started

with Kakkar sir's notes again. Lightning was yet to strike..in the evening entire family was

watching ZEE NEWS and a news came up " CBI searching 4 5 SAIL offices in recruitment scam"..

well my father had his so urces in SAIL..i t old him not t o appro ach anyone coz i want to go o n my

merit rather than on some SIFARISH or Money..!! My father approached some of his friends in

SAIL and it came up that an ex-High Court Judge, a BJP MP from madhya pradesh and GMs in

SAIL are in this Scam.. My father saw it as a ray of light..but i knew that everything will be brushed

under the carpet coz BJP being coming to power in next few months. That night i had to take a

sleeping pill first time in my life...just becoz some bloody people gave 10 lacs for a seat. My uncle

in SAIL told that 50 seats were sold out in GEN Category. It is very demotivating that someone

who has studied subjects upto an exte nt that nor mal people will pee in their pants listening to has

to take pills to sleep. (eg- how many know concept of convection specifically Constant wall heat

flux and Constant wall temperature"..just say in front of some-one that Const wall Temperature is

just analogous to LMTD in heat exchangers u might see some f luid rushing out)Immediately i stuck to my chair-table for next 15 days before GATE-14 constantly for 18 hours a

day. This took heavy toll on my body. But GATE didnt go that well. Exhaustion- Result screwed

IES eventually. I am joining NIT-Hamirpur this year just for some change. I think mind needs

peace so going into HIMALAYAS leaving all good NITs and IITs behind.

"Please Advise me"

Now about GATE-14..there were 4 online papers..of varied difficulty. Second one being easiest!

So analyzing GATE i see that a person starts off with a 0.25 probablility that he will get easy one

and 0.25 that he is screwed.(4th session being toughest one).

I scored 59/100. A secured no. for getting a PSU would be 75/100. Now my parents are saying

that i should go for another GATE only as my marks are improving. But i feel that even if i go for

another attempt i will be able to increase only 10 marks at MAX..! I am a pvt college product. I

reached there coz i was poor in MATHS and Mechanics and didn't do well in AIEEE...that

weakness will always remain along no matter ho w much i study them. Re garding IES, I gave ESE-

2013 without any prep (since i was aiming for GATE-14 then) in that i scored 107 in GS paper

without any prep. I had "not attended" Made Easy classes of GS also till then..!! People die for

that GS score. In paper-1 scored 75 and in paper-2 scored 69 overall 300. This was without any

preparation. This year i was focussing on IES but cut off due to health..now i know my Strength

lies in GS and Weakness in Maths, Mechanics, Analytical ability...In short I am someone who can

do a previously solved problem again very accurately..!!

For the past 2 years i am living consistently at my home and travel 5 hours on every weekend to

Made Easy. I could have lived in Delhi but it would have added an extra cost of 10,000 per month

on parents. Money is not a problem but i didn't feel like wasting that when i can do the same in

weekends. Although i had to bear a lot at home- those sarcastic comments " Aur beta kya kar raheho?" They just rip my heart off..!! Friends, family, relatives, neighbourhood it seems entire city

mocked at me. I have absorbed everything till this day...in hope that one day a three letter word

will say it all "IES". You during yo ur prep would have been going home very rarely..but would

have experienced something like that. In my case it has been 2 years in a row.

Mam i request you to please give my case a good thought and suggest me whether i should go for

GATE or IES next year. My parents are saying i should give GATE secure a PSU and then IES but

that GATE is 5-6 months of absolute waste. I have joined NIT-Hamirpur with an easy branch

Energy.(on Amit Kakkar Sir's advice "jo mil raha ho lo fir agey badho.." I will get 5-6 hours daily

for preparation in it. I request you to kindly suggest me in DETAIL what should be my PLAN. You

Thanks!! I am happy for your lavish praise for my writing.

Instead of movies {Except the unavoidable ones}, i watched sitcoms like FRIENDS,

which have only 20 minutes episode that refreshes you like anything. I f elt its a good

way to reduce str ess and avoid loneliness and insanity. One episode per day o f course.

In case of books i avoided as much as i can. BUt i had my few favorites which i read

again and again to avoid curiosity and mind occupancy of new novels.

The point is don't spend time in things you don't enjoy much and don't leave the

entertainment which makes your happy and bearable.

Sir,

I have completed my Mtech form IIIT-D. I wanted to crack IES exam right after my Btech but, got

admission in Mtech after Btech so had to go with the flow. Now, when I have finished my Mtech, I

have a sincere motivation to go towards this. However, I have got a teaching job in a reputed

university. But, now I want to dedicate one whole year for the IES. Please suggest should I

continue my job and simulatneously do the coaching or leave everything and just do the coaching

and prepare well.
