MY MUSIC MAGAZINE
Genre
◦ The Music Magazine genre(s) I intend to use:
◦ Dance
◦ Hip Hop
Behind the Genre
◦ Hip Hop – Artists: Dance - Artists:
◦ Dr Dre Kaytranada
◦ B.I.G Mr Carmack
◦ Common Naughty Boy
◦ LL Cool J Snakehips
◦ For my genres I have chosen to combine hip hop and dance music. For the hip hop I’ll be using the usual generic influences such as the ones listed (obvious artists). But on the other hand, for the dance music I’ll be using more abstract and less well-known artists(apart from Naughty Boy). The reason I choose Naughty Boy alongside the less well-known artists is to not make the magazine too different so the readers cannot relate.
Associated Imagery
◦ Hip Hop: Dance:
◦ Tattoos Strobe Lights
◦ Big Cars Big Crowds(moshing)
◦ Chains/Jewellery DJs
◦ Sideways or backward facing caps Decks
◦ In my imagery that I plan to use I’ll combine both things from these imagery pools. For
example tattoos on knuckles with someone wearing colourful bright clothing.
Possible photo-shoot ideas
Front cover of a hip hop magazine
◦ Imagery:
◦ In this magazine two major hip hop artists are used, this
automatically draws the readers in as two very iconic
influences of the genre as placed side-by-side.
Font and Masthead:
Across the entire page the same style of font is used, this
creates consistency so it becomes easier to follow. The
main magazine title is located behind the artists on the
front, this allows for the artists to become more
pronounced but yet the main title is still apparent as
it’s very bold and stretches across the page. Also, the colour
used is bright and likewise consistent, by placing yellow on a dark
background text can become more outlined making it easier to read.
Front cover continued…
◦ Message:
◦ On this front cover both artists are wearing lab coats
whilst the general theme of science is implied,
the magazine has put these theme on the front cover for a
humorous effect. Hip Hop and science are completely
different concepts and by collectively inserting them onto
one canvas and using the words “what are Eminem and
Dr Dre cookin’ up?” an almost child-like humour is added
making the imagery and magazine seem more
approachable.
Front cover of a dance magazine
◦ Imagery:
◦ The imagery on this front cover is very bold, it’s a full body
mid-air shot, in which feels asthough the person on the
front is jumping out towards the readers. It’s much more
exuberant than the hip hop magazine.
Font and Masthead:
Like the hip hop magazine the main image in set behind
the title making the imagery more distinct. By setting the
image in front of the title the main story is made more
important, eventough the magazine is the main item as it
contains all the articles and such, the story that is emphasised on the front
cover is the most important article in the magazine. The font is mixed on this cover
as the magazine heading is one font and the main article title in another. The other text around the
main article title is in the same font.
Front cover continued…◦ Colour Scheme:
◦ The colours used on this cover are very bright and energetic.
The main colours used are pink, yellow and white, the reason
for such wild colour use is due to the style of music the
magazine represents, due to dance music being very
excitable the colours used are supposed to reflect that
excitement. Additionally, by making the colours bright
and eccentric the reader’s eyes are drawn and will want to
read on, as the magazine looks asthough it’s full of character.
Background Imagery:
By placing a sun in the background implies that although the
cover seems frantic, there is a welcoming mood to the magazine. Also,
through the drum kit in the background the readers can gather that whilst partly being about
electronic dance music there are elements of physical instrumental dance music aswell, which will
appeal to certain readers.

Dance front covers
Contents page of hip hop magazine
◦ Imagery:
In this contents page there is a very bold main image,
the image of the person on the contents page has
character therefore giving the rest of the page
character as they are the only image, by wearing
multiple colourful chains and other jewellery, the reader’s
attention is fulfilled making up for the lack of images which
would usually grab the reader’s attention more so than
something of a similar style to this.
Contents Page continued…
◦ Font and Masthead:
◦ The contents title is organised in a different style to a
regular contents style. By creating the title in this way
(linked to that of a column style) the page obtains variation,
giving it a unique feel. There are two different fonts on this
page, the contents title is very bold, and doesn’t have much
personality, whereas the font used to the side of the page is
small, thin but yet has a distinctive style. Much like old styled
writing.
Colour Scheme:
The colour scheme for this contents page is fairly dark,
eventhough the chains are colourful thw background colour is
maroon. Alongside the magazine title of “Vibe” there is a sort of chilled out and
mellow feeling created.
Contents page of dance magazine
◦ Imagery:
◦ On this contents page there is use of multiple images, one
main bold and the other two small. All three images used on
this contents page are colourful especially the main one
which has a lot of colour variation. The reason for the
elaborate colour scheme is to reflect the nature of the music
genre. The multiple image use also allows the reader to
become more engaged as they have different things to
look at.
Contents page continued…
◦ Font and Masthead:
◦ The font used throughout the page is within the same style
for the most part of the page, there is only different font used
for the contents title and the page number for the main
article. Unlike the hip hop magazine the contents title is
is not as bold, but yet due to the organisation of the page
fits well. By placing white and yellow font onto a black
background the lettering becomes more definited, making
it easier to read.
