CHAIM POTOK (1929-2002) was born in the Bronx to Jewish immigrants from Poland. Chaim’s years in an Orthodox household and schooling through college stood in stark conflict with the world of literature and art that captured his imagination. In Conservative Judaism, with its emphasis on historical evolution of Jewish texts, Chaim found an intellectual home where his love of Judaism and of secular culture could dynamically interact. Upon ordination,

he served as a US Army chaplain, for 16 months in Korea - in the mid-50’s - with combat medical and engineer battalions. In 1959, Chaim and his young family settled in Philadelphia where he was named scholar in residence at Har Zion Temple. During this time, he also pursued a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote The Chosen, while in Jerusalem, the same year he wrote his dissertation. In 1967, Chaim became editor-in-chief of the Jewish Publication Society of Philadelphia. He taught writing at Johns Hopkins University and also taught a popular course in philosophy to the Benjamin Franklin Honors Fellows at his alma mater. The Chosen was followed by other well-known works such as The Promise, My Name is Asher Lev and The Gift of Asher Lev. Chaim also wrote plays and children’s literature in addition to non-fiction and short stories.

AARON POSNER (Playwright) was the founding Artistic Director of Philadelphia’s Arden Theatre and is an Associate Artist at the Folger Theatre and the Milwaukee Rep. He has won numerous awards as a director and playwright including A Theatre Bay Area Award; three Barrymore Awards; an Outer Circle Critics Award; The John Gassner Award; and a Helen Hayes Awards as director or playwright four of the last ten years. His plays include My Name Is Asher Lev;

The Chosen; Stupid Fucking Bird; Who Am I This Time? (And Other Conundrums of Love); Sometimes A Great Notion; A Murder, A Mystery & A Marriage (with James Sugg), and many others. Aaron has directed more than 150 productions at major regional theatres across the country. Aaron is an Eisenhower Fellow, a graduate of Northwestern University, is from Eugene, Oregon, and lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife, actress Erin Weaver, and his amazing daughter, Maisie.

HARRY PARKER (Director) is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre at Texas Christian University. He has directed more than one hundred professional and university plays and musicals, including productions at the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.); Stages Repertory Theatre (Houston); American Heartland Theatre (Kansas City); and Lyric Theatre (Oklahoma City). In Fort Worth, his professional directing credits include

Permanent Collection and Company at Jubilee Theatre, Hunting and Gathering for Amphibian Stage Productions, and Ellis Island: The Dream of America for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at Bass Hall. Some of his Circle Theatre credits include Moon Over the Brewery; Over the Tavern; King O’ the Moon; Bus Stop; Side by Side by Sondheim; The Last Mass at St. Casimir’s; Picasso at the Lapin Agile; Hail Mary; Mistakes Were Made; The Whipping Man; The Fantasticks; Miracle on South Division Street and Hope and Gravity. At TCU, he has directed Oklahoma!, You Can’t Take It With You, and No, No, Nanette, among others. Originally from Oklahoma City, Harry received his BFA from TCU, and an MA and PhD from the University of Kansas. He is a two-time winner of the Kennedy Center Medallion of Excellence and the former National Chair of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. In 2013, he won the TCU Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement as a Creative Teacher and Scholar. Harry is an associate member of The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

Chaim Potok’s novel, My Name is Asher Lev (1972), profoundly speaks to readers even forty years after its publication. Both a rabbi and a painter himself, Potok (1929-2002) burst upon the literary world with his debut novel, The Chosen

(1967). Selling over three million copies, the book was made into a successful film in 1981. An Off-Broadway musical version followed in 1988, with a libretto by Potok himself. The show closed after only six performances.

His novel, My Name is Asher Lev, was another success, spending six months on the Best Seller List. Readers identified with Asher’s dilemma of trying to resolve his innate desire to pursue his passion for art, with a strict religious father who thinks such pursuits are a waste of time at best, and at worst, evil.

Playwright Aaron Posner masterfully adapted both of these Potok novels into stage vehicles. Circle Theatre is proud to be producing the regional premiere of Posner’s version of My Name is Asher Lev, which won the Outer Critics Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and the John Gassner Playwriting Award in 2013.

Posner distilled the vast scope of Potok’s complex novel into a ninety minute, three actor play while presenting the key issues of the book. How do we reconcile two conflicting realities within ourselves, when they seem to be mutually exclusive? What is the cost of embracing only one, of rejecting the other, or of trying to balance them simultaneously? As Asher tells us, this dilemma is a mystery, “of the sort theologians have in mind when they talk about words like ‘wonder’ and ‘awe.’”

We were blessed and grateful to have had ti me with Rabbi Sidney Zimelman and playwright Aaron Posner at our fi rst rehearsal for My Name is Asher Lev at Circle Theatre. Rabbi Zimelman told of his years at a post-WWII Brooklyn yeshiva, and his

own experiences (similar to Asher’s) of having to choose between pursuing his studies in Judaism, or a career as an arti st. Aaron Posner revealed to us how his adaptati on of Chaim Potok’s novel came about, and his experiences with what worked best for the play in previous producti ons.
