my poetry portfolio freedom
DESCRIPTION
In grade 7 english, we inquired about freedom and how we could ilustrate thet thruogh poetry, over the course of 2 months we analyzed many different poems and how it illustrated freedom, this sparked some imagination into me for creating something above an beyond my ability. we had to write a staement for the 5 poems we had to create, within that, we had to answer 5 questions on why it related to freedom, this project was one of my highlights of grade 7 and my grade paid of the hard work. :DTRANSCRIPT

What is POETRY and how can it be used to communi-
cate FREEDOM
Poetry is a form of literature in which it uses language as a device to portray
thoughts and emotions in an expressive way Poetry allows the individual to
show ones creativity by using many different literary devices Such as similes
metaphors alliteration rhyme schemes and so on Which is why it is a good
form of writing to communicate the emotion of freedom
In this portfolio you will notice haikus free verse and ballad poems You will
also notice the use of similersquos humour rhyme repetition contrast connections
and many more literary devices hidden beneath the poem all betraying the
broad emotion of freedom
Please Enjoy
Look at this my friend
Two spiders differ in size
Just like you and me
Statement of intent In the poem 2 friends I am saying that freedom is within friendship Freedom is friendship because as friends you push boundaries together you enjoy be-ing in the presence of each other and you dont care what other people say that is because you have each other That is freedom The literary devices I used was connection and simile the connection is between the two spiders on the wall working together which relates to my friend and I and the simile is the last line being comparing to the second line I knew that my message was delivered effectively because it is about friendship and everybody can relate to that in their own way I think this message is im-
portant because there are so many ways to be free especially with your friends you and your friends go through everything together and that is freedom in
its on way
Poem 1 haiku
2 Friends by Toby Norton
Excellence is achieved when one is determined
when one is eager
when one set goals and strives to achieve them
But there are some people who dont do any of
this
they mentally curl up in a ball
like the blinds shutting on their hard tattered face
and pretend that nobody is watching
Lifes too short to do even a minute of that
Doesnt everybody want to be excellent
Everyone is excellent
It is whether you can be bothered to find it
A smile is a start
A belief is next
Determination and desire
Excellence is just around the corner
or just over the hill
But everybody already has the title
Excellent
Written on their forehead

Excellence
by Toby Norton
Statement of intent In the poem Excellence I am making an effort to say that freedom is when you pursue excellence in your own way and that some people are not mentally free They just mentally curl in a ball and pretend no one is watching (line 5-6) The literary devices I used to deliver my message are similes and contrast in this poem I am giving 2 examples of people one who is enthusiastic towards every-thing he or she does and the other scared and timid without taking any risks or chances This is the contrast and without it the poem would not be solid or effective the similes in the poem stand out which makes the poem easier to read and more interesting to the reader One of the similes I use is like the blind shutting on there hard tattered face I think this is a good examples of de-tail and some interest for the reader I know that my message is delivered effectively because I show detail through
my similes and from my personal view I think that everybody wants to achieve
excellence in their own way I think this is important because it is important to
achieve excellence at any point in your academic career

Growing up

The trip
Is almost over
The atmosphere is intensifying
Like a rumour in a crowded place
You could watch the tension move
from stilt house
to stilt house
As we searched for belongings
with no names
Our team had 2 hours
exploring the ancient village of Ban Lac
And writing valuable journal entries
Buying cheap souvenirs
for loved ones at home
Whilst I look around
I reflect on my life
something dawned upon me at that moment
I see children in the beautiful rice paddies
getting mud all the way
to there waists
I felt like a disrespectful observer
intruding and taking pictures
on what they call
normal Piling into the bus
Heaving dusty dirty suitcases
Into the back of the bus
We clamber into our seats
Cheerful exhausted
looking forward to being back
The hum
Of the chatter amongst new friends
and old
The bus rattling and bumping
Over the unlevelled road until
it reaches the heavy traffic
Of the outskirts of Ha noi
Ciputra Gates in sight
UNIS here we come
The end of a very successful
grade 7 camp
The cheers of joy fade out
As I make my way

Poem 4 Found Poem
The Trip
by Toby Norton
In my found Poem the trip I am trying to say that people who are free and having fun are still not as fortunate as us (myself) indicated in the bold part of the poem I had my found poem in mind whilst I wrote this journal entry I added some humour into it to make it not just a boring journal entry but a funny interesting passage to read the literary devices I have used in my found poem were Metaphor hyperbole and contrast both of them were used in the bold part of the poem (the freedom part of the poem) The Metaphor used in the poem was in line (22-23) I used the metaphor to illustrate how I felt at that moment I was comparing myself to the children Because of that I used a hyperbole to exaggerate my title of being an intruder instead of a tourist using it for the same reason the contrast used was in lines (15-25) all through the part related to freedom there was a huge contrast between myself and all the other 7th graders and the children in the rice paddies I used the contrast to show how different our lives just from the sight I could make a interpretation on how fortunate and free we both really were I know that my message is delivered effectively because I used a range of literary devices I al-
so think that almost all travellers and tourists can relate to this poem the franticness of the
last day of a holiday trying to pack but also people could relate to looking at someone not as
fortunate as themselves so I hope when the reader reads this they could connect it to there
own experiences this is also connected to why I think this message is important people now-
adays dont put people who are not as fortunate as them in there mind so when they do
read the poem it would make them think of it which is really important to put yourself in
there shoes
Poem 5 Ballad Rhyme
Freedom
by Toby Norton
As I walk up to my bedroom light I stop and reflect in fright I forgot I forgot I say
when I was just about to go up and play I forget of the things teacher said in English block
I wasnt there I was just taking a walk in my head that is oh how silly of me
I remember I was climbing tree The view was big and the breeze was nice but that didnt matter I need some advise
I thought to myself and then came to I an idea so good It made my mum cry I got it freedom I say to myself in joy
Freedom I say Freedom Deploy There in front of me I watch the freedom write
all that remain are colours so bright colours that freedom left behind
then something amazing happened in my mind youve done it youve done it you know
the only thing you need to do know is go to English class to English class we be
Freedom and I we both agree thank you freedom Ill get a good grade
and at that very moment freedom swayed away she flew in front of my eyes
till all I could see was the blue empty sky what an adventure Ive had with the brilliant word
and at that moment my vision blurred you coming your late someone said from the
door as I went in youd never knew what I saw
an eight in my hands an eight ace I had a humongous smile on my face
an eight I said my first eight of the year A smile was normal but then came a tear
Freedom
Poem 5 Ballad Rhyme
Freedom
by Toby Norton Statement of Intent In the ballad poem freedom I am trying to say that freedom can help you if you use freedom to you advantage you could do great things the example I used I thought was a fun way to illustrate this message the literary devices I used in this poem were repetition rhyme and personification the repetition I used in the bal-lad were in lines 321 and 31 mainly because I wanted to give theatrical parts in the story parts in the story where the reader would stop for a second and think why did he repeat that using rhyme I think me as the author a bit more creativi-ty and imagination when writing it the rhyme scheme I used was AABB to give the read some flow and rhythm and the personification used was mainly to describe the freedom and how it helped the boy through his poetry project some of the places I used personification were in lines 15 and 17 I know that my message was delivered effectively because I used good literary de-
vices and all students could relate to that last minute project finish and I am sure
parents can relate to that also I put some comedy in the poem so the reader
could have a good time whilst reading I think this message is important because
people sometime take freedom the wrong way if you use freedom to your ad-
vantage you could be successful Putting comedy or in some ways daftness to a se-
rious issue brings a different to the poem and that is why I think this message is
important

Freedom

Freedom
by Toby Norton Statement of Intent In the ballad poem freedom I am trying to say that freedom can help you if you use freedom to you advantage you could do great things the example I used I thought was a fun way to illustrate this message the literary devices I used in this poem were repetition rhyme and personification the repetition I used in the bal-lad were in lines 321 and 31 mainly because I wanted to give theatrical parts in the story parts in the story where the reader would stop for a second and think why did he repeat that using rhyme I think me as the author a bit more creativi-ty and imagination when writing it the rhyme scheme I used was AABB to give the read some flow and rhythm and the personification used was mainly to describe the freedom and how it helped the boy through his poetry project some of the places I used personification were in lines 15 and 17 I know that my message was delivered effectively because I used good literary de-
vices and all students could relate to that last minute project finish and I am sure
parents can relate to that also I put some comedy in the poem so the reader
could have a good time whilst reading I think this message is important because
people sometime take freedom the wrong way if you use freedom to your ad-
vantage you could be successful Putting comedy or in some ways daftness to a se-
rious issue brings a different to the poem and that is why I think this message is
important

Freedom
by Toby Norton Statement of Intent In the ballad poem freedom I am trying to say that freedom can help you if you use freedom to you advantage you could do great things the example I used I thought was a fun way to illustrate this message the literary devices I used in this poem were repetition rhyme and personification the repetition I used in the bal-lad were in lines 321 and 31 mainly because I wanted to give theatrical parts in the story parts in the story where the reader would stop for a second and think why did he repeat that using rhyme I think me as the author a bit more creativi-ty and imagination when writing it the rhyme scheme I used was AABB to give the read some flow and rhythm and the personification used was mainly to describe the freedom and how it helped the boy through his poetry project some of the places I used personification were in lines 15 and 17 I know that my message was delivered effectively because I used good literary de-
vices and all students could relate to that last minute project finish and I am sure
parents can relate to that also I put some comedy in the poem so the reader
could have a good time whilst reading I think this message is important because
people sometime take freedom the wrong way if you use freedom to your ad-
vantage you could be successful Putting comedy or in some ways daftness to a se-
rious issue brings a different to the poem and that is why I think this message is
important
