1.Introduction
1.1 General A portfolio contains a persons previous records, Present doing and future work plans and guidelines. As a teacher one must have owed a portfolio to reflect on teaching, students learning and over all education system. It is also needed to asses myself. Depending on portfolio I can take decisions what I need to do and what not. Looking at my portfolio one can easily understand me. It will help myself that Who am I and about my working. I can be easily evaluated by my portfolio. 1.2 About myself I am G.M.Nuruzzaman, age – 36 , Nationality – Bangladeshi, grauate in Social Science having English as a foreign language and also graduate in Education. I have been serving as an English teacher for the last 9 (nine) years. I also work as a teacher educator for the last two years in a NGO named BRAC. I enjoy teaching. As a teacher I believe that teaching is not only a profession but also a noble austerity. Teacher is the nation builder so I have many responsibilities. To discharge those responsibilities a teacher must have good qualities. Through extensive training program one can become a skillful teacher. I have been receiving training also. To get chance, visit to the USA and receive training through IREX at George Mason University is a great opportunity for me. I am trying my level best to develop myself as a good teacher.
1.3 About my country
The name of my country is Bangladesh. It is situated in the south East Asia. It is a revering country. We have six seasons. The maximum temperature is 380c and minimum is 70c . We have to face a lot of natural calamity, like flood, cyclone, storm almost every year. We have a huge population of 15 millions. The area of our country is 55,500 square miles. Over 1,500 people live in a square mile. In our country we have a good education system. They are compulsory primary education, Secondary education, Higher Secondary education and Higher Education or University education. Here primary education is free for all. In secondary education girls are free. Higher education is highly competitive. Students have to take part in competitive examination. University degree is

the highest qualification in our country. We have also have a option of National Technical education system.
2. Reflection
2.1Personal Reflections I live in a rural area of Bangladesh. I teach there English at a Secondary level School. I
enjoy my profession. I have taken part several training program in my country as a trainee. My self‐Improvement Plan
G.M. Nuruzzaman, TEA fellow, Bangladesh
Step ‐ 1
Primary Competitive 9 o’clock position
Backup Avoidance 6 o’clock position
Step ‐2
The style I have chosen to work is Humanistic‐Encouraging (1 o’clock position).

Page | 5
What does this style mean to you?
My score for the Humanistic‐Encouraging style means I tend to believe that I usually place unnecessarily limit on my relationships, want to live alone most of the time and feel free. I usually remain preoccupied with my needs so I could not show concern to the other people. Some how I tend to detach from the people.
Step ‐3
Significant Person – My Maternal uncle
Ideas/ behaviors You might have learned –
My uncle is a Doctor. He is a very honest man in every regards. Such as patient dealing, duty to the family, keeps relation with his friends and help them in almost every regards, in his society’s duty he is loved by all. But some things are those he speaks less than other, he doesn’t laugh frequently with his family and relatives it is out of question to do so in a public place. In our society people think that to be reserve is the mark of personality. My uncle is also accepted by all for his such kind of job. I was highly inspired from my boyhood to be a person like him.
Step ‐4
Personally –
Positive consequence –
• I have the facilities to do my personal and family works comfortably. • I need not to mix with other people. • I can live my personal life independently.
MY PORTFOLIO [2008]
G.M. Nuruzzaman, TEA Fellow, IREX, USA. Bangladesh/2008
Page | 6
Self‐Defeating Consequences –
• General people think that usually I don’t like people and want to mix with them. • I want to mix with the general people but I can’t. • I have the desire and ability to help people but sometimes I can’t. • I usually try to do all the works for me by own so usually I get stressed.
Professionally –
Positive Consequences –
• As I am a teacher my students love me. • As I am gentle in manner so my school supervisor love me and give me extra creative
things to do. • I’m very punctual and try to finish my duties in time. • Some colleagues and staffs love me.
Self‐Defeating Consequences –
• Some colleagues usually say some thing behind me and they don’t like me. • I can’t share my personal problems with my colleagues. • Working alone I often commit mistakes. • I can understand a particular thing very well but some times I can’t share with them.
Step – 5
Some positive difference –
• Increase my interest around people. • Learn to accept all the people. • Get more opportunity to interact with my students and colleagues. • More respect from other. • Work effectively as mentor.
Some negative difference –
• I’ll lose my personal and free time. • Close relationship can make me bored.
MY PORTFOLIO [2008]

• Opening feelings and satisfaction to people will be able to find my areas of weakness. • I have to talk more and listen less. • I have to unfold myself to all.
2.2 Fieldwork Reflections In the month septemer.08 we reached Washington and then the TEA fellows were sent
to different universities for their course. I am lucky enough that I have got the chance to do my course at George Mason University. We were sent to different schools for our internship and fieldworks. I am doing my field work at POE Middle School, 7000 Cindy lane, Annandale. This is a nice institution with unique school building and other surrounding environment.
The office : Well decorated office room with good behaving staffs. They have all modern facilities. The staffs are very helpful to the Students, guardians and other people.
Classrooms : About classroom first thing is that here are teacher centered classroom – teacher will remain in the class and students will come one class after another to take lessons. All the classrooms are well decorated with modern facilities. The class room is full of teaching materials. For audio visual learning Tv, Cassette and CD player, OHP, Computer and projector. One interesting thing is Students need not to bring their books in the classroom it is provided by the school. The sitting arrangements are with tables and chairs.
My Mentor Teacher: My mentor teacher is Mrs. Emily Maksymonko. She is the Chairman of ESOL of the school. She is a experienced teacher with pleasant personality. She teaches her Ss with great care. Using the teaching materials she makes the lesson interesting. For me she is very helpful. She helps me to understand the lessons and other staffs. She teaches me how to cope with the situation in the classes.
Materials From Mentor Teacher : From the very beginning of my field works my Mentor Teacher was very helpful to me. She is always giving me instruction about the teaching materials in the USA and let me know. At the first she presented me a text book named “Stone fox’’. The classes I,ve joined with her she has given me the almost all lesson plans and let me know about the strategy. I have also collected Some materials of language games, Flash card, Word arranging (Bingo) etc.

important things like education, family, culture, economy, politics etc. It was a nice day of
enjoyment and outing as well. On 1st of November we the IREX team had been to a visit to the
Palace Dr. Farnoosh Sharokhi. We joined there at a lunch party. There were many delicious but
halal food. We met Dr. Sharokhi’s mother – I think she is an ideal mother ever since I
remember. Her husband, 3 years old daughter entertained us a lot with great care. We are
almost at the end of the course without visiting there you can’t imagine about a American
family how gently they are living, how strong their family ties are? They took us to a famous
shopping mall named Tyson’s Corner for shopping loving people.

Lesson Plan # 01
The world is changing at an accelerated pace. Profound technological innovations &globalization processes have further reduced distances making the world a global village and enhancing the

accessibility While distances are reduced ,divergences have become wider in societies like India where multicultural, multiethnic and multi lingual social fabric calls for a process of social transformation. In the backdrop of this reality, my role as Social Science teacher becomes important. Today the young learners are at a transitional phase of their life. We need to provide them a comprehensive view of society, so that the young learners of today can shoulder the responsibilities of tomorrow. Merely knowledge of natural sciences won't suffice. They need to have an understanding of behavioral processes where instincts &emotions play a prominent role and energies need to be channelized in desired directions. IN this perspective my philosophy revolves around following points *To¬ develop amongst the youth an understanding of the processes of change and development--both in terms of time & space through which human societies have evolved, *TO enable them to appreciate the diversity in the land and people of the country with its underlying unity¬ *to¬ understand and cherish the values enshrined in the constitution and to prepare the learners for their role and responsibilities as effective citizens of a democratic country to aid in acquiring¬ knowledge, skills and the understanding to face the challenges of contemporary society as individuals and groups.

• When the students have low level of English proficiency.
3. Why or how is this method or strategy useful?
It can be made effective and useful if the lesson plan is designed in such a manner that it would
challenge the intelligence of different style of learners. Like there will be questions and tasks
suitable for students having different approaches to learning.
4. What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method?
In this strategy there are eight ways of learning. So the lesson in the class has to be such which
would engage all the students in different types of activities involving reading, writing, talking,
listening, drawing, visualizing, critical thinking, touching and acting. Such lesson may also have
tasks and activities which will have something to connect to a student’s personal life or to living
things and natural phenomena.
5. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting?
In my setting that is in my class where I have about 50 students this strategy will be the most
appropriate one. My class is a heterogeneous one and the students, though in Grade 10 have
different levels of English proficiency’s Besides what I have noticed is that not all students
respond to my other type of teaching methods. And now I have learned that I should use the
teaching strategy using MI (Multiple Intelligences) now and then to help my students to learn
better.
6. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or
strategy?
I would be very proud and fortunate to help my co‐teachers and colleagues to learn about the
benefits and the positive sides of this strategy. I will first ask them to sit in my class and observe
me conducting the class using the integrated MI theory of learning. I will let my students share

their views and thoughts about the teaching method and have the teachers decide for
themselves about the advantages of the strategy, particularly in our context and setting.
Portfolio Strategy Sheet # 04
Choose a method or strategy that you have learned about or observed during field experience.
I. Name of method or strategy: “Peer review”
II. When is this method or strategy useful? This strategy can be very effective at the beginning of the lesson to go back to the things discussed at the previous lesson.
III. Why or how is this method or strategy useful? I observed this strategy at the lesson in the Secondary School Standards of Learning Strengthening Course in English‐ 8 ( POE Middle School). As such courses are designed to assist students in passing the SOL exams by strengthening students’ test‐taking skills as well as their understanding of course concepts this method is an excellent way to review the material and check sts’ understanding of the material. The strategy is of special interest when the controversial issues are discussed. Everybody is involved and the weaker sts don’t fall behind as they have the paper in front of them to support their confidence.
IV. What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method? The teacher hands out sts’ papers. The class goes over the list of questions discussing every single one and students check the answers on the papers given to them and grade them. The procedure involves intensive discussion since these are not true/false questions but mostly Wh‐questions based on the discussed novel, poem, essay, etc. The teacher collects the papers.
V. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting? It can be used as a good practice of test‐taking skills and just for reviewing the material.
VI. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy?

“Peer‐review” can give sts a better understanding of the way the teacher grades their answers so I would recommend that teachers in my school should use it on a regular base especially before tests.

5. Use of Technology and audio‐visual aid in education
In our country we have been teaching our students in a general way. The lesson are not effective and interesting. Our Ss get bored of learning. But here I have observed that from Middle school to the universities classrooms are full of modern and electronic teaching materials. Teachers and students are using them according to their needs. But in my country we have lack of such kind of materials. Due to lack of sufficient Technology based teaching materials our education is not developing much. I hope we will be able to use those teaching materials in short future and ensure quality education in my country.

6. Comparing and Contrasting: I am teacher from Bangladesh. In Bangladesh the education system is not much improved. We have lack of good and experienced teachers. For want of teaching materials the teachers can not teach their students effectively. Even in the rural areas students do not have books to study till half of the educational year. Students are from poor family and their guardians are not conscious enough. Most of the guardians do not have any communication to their children’s school. They have the common evaluation system. No special care is taken. So the number of dropout is very high. Here in the USA, I have learnt from my experience and discussing with my mentor teacher that the teaching system is largely taken care by government. Government provides all facilities for the education priory basis. The classroom is full of modern equipment and they are used in a proper way. There is a good relation between the guardians and the school authority is wonderful. Here I have observed a guardian and teachers forum. They discussed their children’s weak areas and the way of development. Another thing is that the evaluation system. The Teacher and school system evaluate student and take necessary steps. So the number of dropout is relatively low. In my country Bangladesh we can reach our education at a good stage. But we have many lacking like good number of school, Smart curriculum, skilled teachers, Modern teaching materials, proper education authority etc. Here in the USA I have got many points to do for my students and education of my country. Going back from here I will try my level best to implement these things to develop my students, school and overall of my country. 7. My Furure Plan
After getting the chance to the USA I was wondering how I will use my achievement going back to my country. I will share my idea with my colleague first and make them understand the strong side and effectiveness of my courses. I will work with my students in a new image. I will use my US knowledge on pedagogy, using of teaching materials, use different scale of evaluation. After that I have a strong desire to arrange workshops, seminar and training session. So that my colleagues from nearby institution can follow my strategy and develop their teaching . I also want to arrange meeting with the government education authority and inform them the education system of USA and how can we implement them in our country. I want to make them understand the necessity of proper education through effective learning. In my case I will try my level best to follow the methods in my Teaching and develop myself as well.

8.Conclusion
I live in a developing country of South‐East Asia where we have to fight against hunger, health, clothing and housing. I am a teacher of that country. Through IREX I have got the chance to join such kind of training program to develop myself and share my ideas and experiences. I have got the chance to represent my country. I like to thank IREX and obviously the US department of states for arranging such a program. The content, The Professors, the Facilitators and staffs all are very supportive. As the world has become a global village and we are the human being we have many responsibilities. The developed country should arrange such types of program so that the whole have the opportunity to serve the man kind.
