Name: Saeed AL-Qarni Class: B204 People from abroad, who come to stay in the United States. Often have more problems than they anticipated. I believe this is because, people think that they understand the United States better than they really do. Often however, they have an unrealistic view of the United States and their possible place in it. This happened to me when I first went to live in India. I thought everyone, would love me but they didn’t. The entertainment industry are one of the main reasons for this unrealistic view. By the time they were adults, many people all over the world, saw numerous American movies and television shows. As we all know, movies and TV shows, do not give a true picture of the United States. For one thing, the average person in a movie or on TV looks much more attractive, than people that you see in the street. In addition, the people portrayed in the movies or on TV are often much wealthier, than average Americans. The average American, household income is about $46, 000 a year. Stories in the movies, and on TV are often about people, who make much more money than that. People studied English, in their home countries may encounter, also more problems than they expected. This is because use a language in a classroom, situation is not nearly as difficult as using it in the real world. In the classroom your teacher and your classmates, knew what words and structures you have already learned. People you met on the street have no idea. In addition, even if they realize that they need to simplify their language, they don’t know how to do it. Finally, the main reason, that many people suffer culture shock when they visit, the United States is that they expect to love it and are surprised when they don’t. They are shocked to find that they miss many. Things about their own country, even if they couldn’t wait to leave. I knew a man who saved money, for years to come to the United States. When he got here, he stayed just three weeks, before he returned to his own country. People also do not expect living in a foreign culture, be difficult but it’s often exhausted. Just listening to and trying to understand another language all day is very tiring. People are planning to go to the United States or any other country for an extended stay shouldn’t expect that their life will be easy. However, with the right attitude, it can be very interesting.

Week 04 HW 02: Editing Practice

Name: Saeed AL-Qarni Class: B204

Students say that they go to college because they don't want to work "just" for the money students want work that it is important. However, students do not realize that not everyone can save the world. There aren't enough world-saving jobs to go around. However, is plenty of employment in ordinary but honorable professions such as: plumbing sales auto repair house painting also drafting trucking and home health. These jobs do not promote a college degree but they all have the potential to be well-paid if unromantic career. Maybe young people should be more practical to think about their futures. Young people should look for satisfying work and save their dreams for leisure time activities.

Many people today are much less healthier than people one hundred years ago. Of course, modern science has cure many diseases that used to kill many people premature. However, lifestyles used to much healthier. For example men and women one hundred years ago worked much harder than they do today. They have had strong muscles and strong hearts because of they made a lot of physical labor. People today may work long hours but they spent most of their time sitting at a desk. As a result of, people have to schedule time for exercise. People also ate healthier foods than we did today. They ate more whole grains and virtually no processed foods and their food also had no preservatives. Another reason I feel that people used to be healthier is that they had fewer expectants. They expect life would be hard and they were usually right. Today we believe that our lives should be easy and many people feel great anger and hostility when our lives are not. These negative feeling contribute to poor health. I think if we adopted the lifestyle of one hundred years ago, we would be happier and healthier than we are today.

The paragraph below, comparing writing essays to writing stories, is organized like this: Make any other changes that you think are necessary.

When you write an essay, Writing essays only requires the ability to think logically. You can do research when you write an essay. You can read about the topic and use data and the opinions of experts to support your argument. I would rather have to write five essays than just one story.

When you write a story, you have to give your opinion and support it. however, you have to rely on your imagination in order to make the story interesting. in order to write good stories, you have to be extremely creative. When you write a story, you are on your own. There is no reference book that will help you decide what should happen next. When people discuss communication they usually only refer to speaking. However, social scientists have estimated that only about 7% of the content of a message is communicated by words. About 38 percent communicated by paralanguage, which is tone, pitch, and speed of the voice about 55 percent come through nonverbal cues, which includes such things as gesture, posture, facial expression, and so on. Conversely, it is behavior other than spoken or written words that contribute most to meaning. Most of that nonverbal communication is about emotions, but is a powerful motivator in human behavior. We base our feelings and emotional responses not so much upon what another person says and upon what another person do. For example, there is proverb that says, "Actions speak louder than words." Research confirm this. When verbal and nonverbal signal contradict, we usually believe nonverbal. For one thing, it seen as more difficult to fake. Experiments have shown that virtually everything we use to decide if someone is lying comes from the nonverbal cues. For example, we may compliment someone's new haircut while our faces give away the real feeling of dismay we have.

Recently, people's faith in our criminal justice system has shaken and it is now time to reexamine. At one time, most people have thought that our courts were almost infallible--at least in terms of convicting the guilty. They believed that innocent people do not go to jail. (Although everyone admitted that guilty people sometimes are set free.) However, events over the past few year have eroded our confidence in our system of justice. First, there was O.J. Simpson trial, which has showed that both lawyers and prosecutors were more interested in manipulating law than in finding the truth. Then, there were several well-publicized cases in which advances in forensic science such as DNA testing have proved that some people who had sentenced to death were actually innocent. These cases were so disturbed to the governor of Illinois that he suspended the death penalty in his state until an investigation completed. We should all follow Illinois' lead and start a national dialogue on reforming our criminal justice system.

There are several different methods of language teaching which have tried over the years. Three of the earliest was translation, the direct method and the audio-lingual method. In the translation method students simply translate texts from the target language into their native language. They also required memorizing vocabulary and verb forms. They were often not taught spoken forms, so little if any conversation takes place in the classroom. The direct method was a reaction to the important of reading in the translation method. In the direct method, students hear the target language in the classroom, but they did not see it writing. The idea of the direct method was that students will learn a second language as they learned their first language, "directly" without being taught. Some teachers refused speaking even one word of the student's native language in her classroom. The audio-lingual method has become popular in the 1960s, this way of teaching made extensive use of tape recorders. Students required listening to and to memorize dialogues and then do drills on various structures. Practitioners of this approach believed that language learning was a mechanical process dependent on a lot of

practice.

Week 16 HW: Revising and Editing

Name: Saeed AL-Qarni Term: 3 Class: B204

Edit and rewrite the following paragraph. Look for problems in the following:

• verb forms • verb + gerund/infinitive • word forms • passive voice • relative clauses • articles a/an/the • transition words • punctuation

Most of us find it difficult to climb even "ordinary" 10,000 foot mountains and it amazes us when we see people ascend mountains such as Mount McKinley, (20,320 feet), Annapurna, (26545) and the tallest of them all Mt. Everest (29,035). It's difficult enough to reach these heights if you strong and healthy and haven't handicaps. Can you imagine doing it blind? Eric Weihenmayer can. Eric was born with some sight but legally blind. By the time he was thirteen, he has lost his sight complete. He had graduated from high school as captain of the wrestling team and knew that he wanted to show the world that blind people can do. He had gone to Boston College and a teaching career. He also started mountain climb and since then he has experienced many "firsts." He was a first blind person to walk the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, a first to reach a summit of Mt. McKinley in Alaska and, in 2001; he became the first blind person to scale Mt. Everest.
