Anecdotal Observations

On September 17, 2013 during circle time Cash was telling me he was going to play with the cars when it is activity time. I asked him why does he like to play with the cars and he said because they go fast. Then Srijan said I like to play with the trains because they go fast and they go on tracks. Then the teacher let them go for activity time, Cash & Srijan ran to the cars and train bin to bring to the carpet. While they were playing other children came and joined them. They were all talking about how fast they go and how cars don't need tracks and trains do. Then Bryan said while airports don't need tracks and you can't drive them. Then the children played on the carpet with the cars and trains.

Cue AnalysisWhile doing my observation I learned that the children are interested in vehicles. The way children continued to talk about it during activity time. Also the children were talking to each other and comparing two vehicles together showed that they had knowledge about it and it gave me a topic. It also got me thinking on how the children have the knowledge for it and how I could take it to the next level. The two theories that I picked are Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. The reason why I picked Jean Piaget is because the children will explore the different types of vehicles and through their senses by touching them, seeing them, and hearing them. Piaget believed that children are curious and learn most effectively when they are actively involved in building knowledge (Guidance of Young Children Pg 33), this is why I picked Jean Piaget.

The reason why I picked Lev Vygotsky is because the children will be doing the activity but I will also be asking them questions so it will involve scaffolding. To a teachers changing support as a child develops a new competency or skill. (Guidance of Young Children Pg 39)

Common Experience On October 8 the activity that I did with the children was a math activity. Where the children had to sort the vehicles in any way they would like. The reason why I did this activity was because my class theme was sorting. When planning an activity I had to keep in mind that my class has a theme and the children cues that is why I picked math activity because sorting and math go hand in hand. The children could sort the vehicles in any way they want. The children sort them by colours; sort them by how many wheels they have and by how many doors they have. I was surprised with the way they sort them because even I didn't think about it the way the children were thinking. When I took out the activity the children were coming to me because it was something new and then I asked them what can you do with them? Bryan took the car and the train and put them in different boxes and I said why did you do that because the cars have wheels, doors, you see them on the road. On a train you cant see the wheels, dont have a door for each person and you dont see them everyday. Then Cash was sorting them by how many wheels they have. He called me and told me look I sort them I said how? Cash said by the wheels. Bike has 2, Cars has 4, airplane and etc When it was time to clean up I ask the children to put all the vehicle together and give them to me. This is how my activity went.

RationaleThe topic that I am doing is vehicles because the children are always talking about them and they show an interest in them. The children will learn about vehicles they see in their daily lives and know a bit about. This way the theme will not be new to them and they would already know something about the topic in which they can talk about. The reason why I want to go forward with this topic is because the children are interested and because they can learn a lot about our society and vehicles they would see in their everyday activities. This website talks about how vehicles can teach the children about the different roles people play in the society and the different types of uniform they have to wear. This way if the children were to see people in this uniform they would know who they are and what they do. They are also learning who to call if there is an emergency and the type of vehicle they drive. www.gr.gov.sk.ca/Default.,aspx?DN=7b12961c-7f9c-43ce-9e9c-dd8fe352be1f\

This website talks about how I could do some activities and its developmental skills. Also how each developmental skill is important and when doing activities to keep them in mind. The development skills that they talk about are listening, expression, social, self esteem, math and creativity because the children should get something out of the activity that they are doing. http://www.brighthubeducation.com/pre-k-and-k-lesson-plans/11137-all-about-cars-and-other-wheels/ Work Cited Marion, M. Closing Experience /CelebrationOn Monday November 18 I took my scrapbook to the table in the morning before the children came and had it set up for the children when they came inside. The children came and did what they do every morning which is signing in, getting a book and singing O Canada. Then when it was activity time four children came to me who were Lameya, Bryan, Cash, and Srijan and asked "Ms. Priya can we look at it?" I said "yes" Then they all were looking at the pictures and remembering the activities they did and they were asking if they could do some of the activities again. I told them I will not be able to do the activities again with them but I will tell teacher to do them with you if there is time. Then I asked them "what activity do you guys want to do to finish the topic of vehicles?" Cash and Bryan both said "can we make a car?" I said "is that okay with the class? Do you all want to make cars" they all said "yes". On Tuesday November 19 I had brought materials to make a car with the children. The materials I had was toilet paper rolls, wheels, and sticks. I had been saving toilet paper rolls since the beginning of placement when I saw the children had an interest in vehicles. When I told the children we are going to make cars today the boys got really happy and some of the girls. I had four children at a time making their cars. The children made four holes in their toilet paper rolls and they put the sticks through it and then put the wheels in. The JK needed some help making the holes but the SK were able to do it themselves. Once the children were done making their car they started to race with each other to see who has the fastest car. This is what I did for my closing experience /celebration.
