Canon EOS DSLR Camera Handling(Back to Top)

All the Rebels come with 3 handling features: Small grips (DSLR), buttons (instead ofdials), and several added functions that allow the user to use camera away from hisface.

Some specific adjustments are not there when compared with 60D & 70D. In place ofthumb wheel, there are buttons in Rebel for activating basic functions such as exposurecompensation. Besides, there isn’t any top LCD, hence to change white balance or tocheck the settings one has to boot the rear screen. For the direct AF point selection, there isn’t any 8-way pad or joystick. However, the cameras of higher level allow easyand fast correction of settings without taking the eyes off and missing the moment.

Page 3: My Review for Canon eos rebel t5i

In fact, with touch control, it shows everything in its rear screen which substantiallymakes the EOS learning curve low. Its touchscreen is just like any modern smartphonewith high responsiveness. Besides, adjustable functions, such as focus point, exposure, are just a tap away. However, while adjusting the LCD, the camera will not be ready. With the help of its feature guide, you could learn how to use most of its options.

Phone gestures, for example, swiping, pinch zoom, are the picture review system’sparts that allow checking the focus instantly and in an easier way than any non-touchEOS body available. Besides, in the Live View mode, the Focus is touch-enabled thatallows the user to tap and focus on static objects in the frame without manipulating 9-point AF system.Since, there isn’t any protective weather sealing in kit lenses and the body, make surenot to use it in the rain without the cover. It has popup flash feature, but using it as theprimary light won’t give you better results. Its rear LCD can be rotated almost parallel toits body at 3600. Besides, you can even turn it in such a way that it faces the body forstorage or better protection.

Stills Quality(Back to Top)

IIts sensor is almost identical to T2i/T3i/T4i/60D/7D/SL1, and the dynamic & noiserange is almost same. However, noise in JPEG is cleaner than T5i & T4i. We canexpect results that are up to ISO 3200. If compared with other cameras, Nikon D5100 islittle better while Sony A65 is little inferior. It is more about a couple of solid stops thatare far better than the usual point-and-shoot.

Except for JPEG, only shooting mode like HDR or multi-shot NR, Raw gives youoptimum results through this camera. However, the JPEG isn’t flexible enough andpost-production creates most of the appeal of several photographs. Besides, rawshooting even allows you to reschedule decisions, such as noise reduction, distortion, sharpening, white balance, tone curves, exposure, etc., which are responsible fordistraction while catching the moment.

HDR merges the 3 shots which have been taken in quick succession. Besides, theautomated result saves the highlights in a natural and fine manner, but not better thanthe Highlight Tone Priority enabled raw file. If you wish to use the SNS-HDR program toprocess on your own, then you need to manually adjust exposures since AEB (AutoExposure Bracketing) is limited to just three shots (-2EV to +2EV).

The Multi-Shot NR merges four shots for creating a single one that has lesser noise.Besides, you could even adjust your very own starting ISO. However, the effectswouldn’t be clear till ISO 800. At higher ISO, 1.5 stops are better, but if the camera is

Page 4: My Review for Canon eos rebel t5i

over a tripod or you are able to lean on IS lens, then it’s better to lower ISO and shootlonger. With handheld sequences or Handheld Night Scene, the auto-alignment featurehas limitations.

Stills Action(Back to Top)

This specific camera comes with the very same phase-detect AF unit (all cross type 9points) and has almost the same rate of frame (5 fps versus 5.3 fps) like the 60d whichis great for capturing moving objects. However, the raw doesn’t buffer. Holding theshutter down while in a continuous mode, it would take 6 raw, 4 raw + JPEG till 30JPEGs to slow down, which is hardly a second of continuous raw shooting that’s quitelesser, when compared to 16 raw frames of 60D. However, the difference is crucial ifyou are trying to shoot a specific moment. Apart from this, the T5i with its latest USMlenses has a substantially high hit rate of 50%+ in moderate to brighter conditions. Thehigher tier cameras are the 7D and 5D III.

A Good Digital Video Camera or Digital Movie Camera?(Back to Top)

The video in T5i is cleaner, crispier and less in contrast in comparison to other pointand shoot cameras. When it comes to stills, with right lenses you can get creamybackgrounds and subject isolation that looks professional enough. In other words, what

Page 5: My Review for Canon eos rebel t5i

really matters is the focus. However, while using it for first time, your obvious reactionwould be like "Why everything is so blurry?"

In T5i, the video mode’s autofocus is a key upgrade. Prior to T4i, the DSLRs of Canonhad very slow contrast-detect AF through manual focusing aids. Hence a lot ofadjustments were needed to be made with rear LCD to get the things done, or one hadto go for custom firmware. However, with "Hybrid AF", such problem has been solved. With non-STM lenses, it is quite slow and inaccurate and does not work properlyoutside the center of frame, or in a dim light. Besides, it is not capable of tracking thingswhich are faster than caffeinated sloth. However, the only good thing is that it isn’tmanual focus.

Practically speaking, if you wish to film children playing soccer, then with DSLR quality, there are 3 options: Pre-focus, stop lens down for getting more field depth, and stayingperpendicular to action. However, you can go for mirror-less cameras which could keepup.

The videos in Canon are in MOV format (H.264 compression). However, the processingis quite intensive and implementation isn’t efficient. You need a superior computer withquad core that has a lot of space (350 MB/min at 1080p/30), along with fine video editorlike Sony Vegas, Apple iMovie, etc. You will get better results with right white balance, custom tone curve with sharpening, color & low contrast.

Make sure not to shake while taking a shot because unstable things over 50mm willprevent you from taking smooth footage. However, by transcoding to the editableformat and utilizing anti-shake features of Vegas, Virtual Dub, Premiere with Deshaker, you can fix it later. Hence go for primes, since the 2 kit lenses are more stabilized.Besides, they are even STM that allows them to focus through stepper motor which isusually quieter and better than USM.

Most of the stabilized lenses with full frame are audible in audio tracks since they arethe non-STM lenses focusing mechanisms. Moreover, you also have to tolerate fingermovements, dial clicks & wind noises that reduce the quality of the sound. T5i canrecord CD quality stereo tracks (48 KHz 16 bit), but the baffling and isolation withintegrated stereo Mic is the real problem. However, the easiest alternative would be toattach external Mic (battery powered) to flat hot shoe in shock mount. Two of the mostpopular ones are from Rode and they cost around 250 bucks. On the other hand, H1stereo recorder from Zoom can be camera mounted too, and is quite cheaper.

Canon Lenses(Back to Top)

Both of the kit lenses are superb. Particularly the 18-135/3.5-5.6 STM, since it is one ofthe best kit lenses (consumer class) from Canon. Besides, if you upgrade it, you will getbetter speed, more contrast, and a different range.

Some tips for further additions:

Primes are cheaper, lighter & smaller. They are optically superior and are available inbroad apertures with lesser manufacturing variations. They are less flexible, inconvenient and come updated with newer technology like reduction in weight, moreprecise, better stabilization and lens and could make you miss some real good shotsin fast shooting environment.Movie lenses & still lenses have different requirements. For instance, some lensesare better than the others in terms of operation, distortion, focal, distance scale, etc.Primes are the best choice. For indoor use and that too without flash, the f/2 lens on the body is fast and good

Page 7: My Review for Canon eos rebel t5i

enough. For slower things you usually require a flash since it offers better and clearerpictures.50/1.8 is a costly alternative with subject isolation and image quality.

Which is the best Canon DSLR Camera?(Back to Top)

Canon EOS T5i VS. Canon EOS T3i:You get better AF for the stills, continuous shooting speed, along with touchscreen. AFsystem is quite precise and fast with the wide-aperture lenses, especially the off-centersubjects. For slow video scenes, the hybrid-AF system is good, but contrast-detectfeature of T2i & T3i is better.

Canon EOS T5i VS. Canon EOS T4i:Same camera but with a feature that allows to preview the effects of image in LiveView. Its 18-55 kit lens is now STM and the 18-135 is still the same. A good alternativeof T4i, because it’s cheaper.

Page 8: My Review for Canon eos rebel t5i

Canon EOS T5i VS. Canon 60D:Has several improvements, but raw buffer is hard to work with. With T5i, you will getone-second at 5 fps and 3 with 60D. T5i is in no way a sports camera in raw. You canshoot JPEG all day and movies. When it comes to focusing performance, it is betterthan 60D.

Interface speed of 60D is good, and needs less pressing of the button. It is faster incomparison to T5i, but for detailed review of picture selecting focus area in the LiveView, it is inferior. 60D is cheaper, but do not go for 18-135 kit since it’s a non-STM lenswhich is less in sharpness in comparison to T5i version.
