What does being a Director entail?

It can be argued that the Director is the most important person when creating a short film trailer. As a director i will be responsible for the location of the

filming. My main role will be to go out and decide where is best to shoot if necessary consulting people

to ask if its possible for us to film in a specific location. Being a director is more than choosing the location for

the filming. Its about reading and discussing the synopsis with the actors and making sure that they are

reliable and committed. I have created a storyboard which is just a brief notes about what will be included

in the scenes, i have also taken pictures to give a rough idea about what the trailer will be about, but

then again, that's what the synopsis is for.

What does being a Producer entail?

The role the Producer carries out is in a way similar to that of a Director. Being a producer means that i will be the first one on the film and the last one off. Generally , i will be the one who has found the screenplay and are involved in all aspects of the film making process. My role is also to be certain that the costs for filming in a specific location is allowed. The role of a Location manager slightly ties in with that of a producer, i will be organising location scouting and taking care of everything associated with shooting a location i.e. getting permission to shoot in places like hotels.

What does being a Publicist entail?

Creating awareness about the upcoming film by producing the short trailer and most importantly shooting stills of the chosen casts in their costumes, this will give the audience a hint about who will play what roles. Printing and distributing stills to journalists to create awareness and publicity as well as writing the release notes to go with the launch of the trailer.

What does being a Sound Recordist entail?

Deciding whether the sound will be re -dubbed or not. If it is re-dubbed my role is record separately afterwards or before. Its easier to record sound separately because this allows you to edit the sound to fit the scenes you want.

There are others roles that Deborah will carry out, we will also be sharing a few roles together because I've noticed that two heads are better than one when working together. One of the roles that Deborah will be responsible for is the role of Script writing. Seeing that writing a script for a short trailer is not an easy job i told her that i would be much better if she created a Script Breakdown Sheet. This is the process of logging each significant element needed for production of a scene (such as cast, costumes, special effects, cars and stunts) onto a breakdown sheet. The purpose is to create a means of communication and documentation between the production team and other departments so that they are informed of what has to be produced and by when. Another reason is to break down a script is because you cant effectively budget a film until you have identified your required item
