A number of different kinds of wildlife are mentioned in the novel.Perhaps most fascinating is the number of different birds Samencounters. In the past section we get to know Frightful, the falcon, abit better, as well nuthatches, chickadees and cardinals are alsomentioned. Earlier wood pewees, sparrows, nighthawks and warblers are spotted by Sam. Later in novel he makes mention of a horned owl, a wood thrush, and a red-eyed vireo.
