This lesson will take 20 minutes for 1 week. It will be a total of 100 minutes long.

Commentary: I plan on engaging my students about the fascination of each animal at the zoo. Learning about their habitat and the food that each animal eat. We will do arts & craft activities about animals. Our class will play fun zoo games like monkey in the middle to get the students up and moving around.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1: The first 10 minutes: Introductory activity we will read Good Night, Gorilla or Dear Zoo. In this story the children will see different zoo animals.

15 minutes: The teacher will be the zoo keeper and the children will act like the animals. We will act out different animals from the story.

Day 2:

The first 10 minutes: I will encourage the children to find the upper and lowercase letter Z on their worksheet and then have them trace the letters with a crayon.

Day 3:The first 10 minutes: I will read Elmer the elephant to our pre-k class. Then before returning to their seats discuss why Elmer used colors to make him standout.

Pre-Assessment:

The students knowledge of letter recognition beginning sounds of different animals. Each student will show me what an upper/lower case letter Z and tell me the sound of that letter. Once the student mastered his letters and sounds our class move on.

I will hold up a card of different animals then ask the class to raise their hand to give me the beginning letter sound of that animal.

Scoring Guidelines:

Each morning our class will sing songs about letters and sounds and trace each letter that we are working on. Pre-Assessment sheet with letter id, basic shapes, counting/writing from 1-10, writing their name, if they can recognize or name colors, sorting, use of scissors. Each week I will observe my students on each item mastered on the pre-assessment sheet.

Post-Assessment:

Name 5 zoo animals? What kind of food do they eat? What letter does that animal begin with? What color was the animal? What sound does that animal make?

Scoring Guidelines:

I will interact with each child about what they have learned about animals at the zoo. I will score them on recognizing the sounds, writing the letter Z and knowledge of that particular animal.

Differentiated Instructional SupportDescribe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: teachers making the objective clear for the students, model the work for each student who are struggling in their class, make it fun for the student to learn, use positive incentive for working hard & good behavior.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material: continue to check on the student during work assignments, move the student close to the teacher during rug time, always praise their effort, provide the necessary material needed, give small rewards.

This website has tons of neat and useful ideas for pre-k children. It allows you to compare various curriculum and learning standards addressed. Creative learning ideas for a child who might struggle with different subjects.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Monthly newsletters about what our classroom is working on and activities, ask parents to read every night to their child, send home worksheets to work on at home and have parents sign that they student did their homework, have a treasure box full or rewards for students turning in their homework.

Interdisciplinary Connections

Have a picture of a zoo and one of a farm. Each student will choose a picture of an animal then decide where it belongs. Then talk with your students about zoo animals you cant touch, you can learn about them, there are different types of animals in the zoo.

Then talk about how farms animals you can touch, the farmer grow and raise the animals, and the farm grows food. See if your students will recognize that they are both animals in the zoo & on the farm.
