Symposium Topics
Session One: 9:30 – 10:45 amPeter Heydenrych, Corporate Finance Associates“Optimizing the Sale of a Family Business” The wealth of many clients is tied up in businesses they own. And that can be a problem when it comes time to retire. Too many owners aren’t prepared for the day when they’ll need to cash out. Advanced planning for the sale of a business is more important than ever and can mean the difference between getting by or fund-ing the golden retirement years of their dreams.
10:45 – 11:00 am Networking Break Session Two: 11:00 am – 12:15 pm
Phil Kavesh, J.D., Kavesh, Minor & Otis, Inc.“The Ins and Outs of Retirement Plan Trusts for IRA and other Qualified Retirement Plans” In 2003, the federal rules changed regarding how a beneficiary can inherit an IRA. A beneficiary can now stretch out an inherited IRA or other qualified retirement account using their own date of birth as the measuring life. This in turn can amount to millions of dollars more to the beneficiary due to the shear power of income tax deferral. Our expert, Phil will discuss the importance of the IRA stretch out through a trust and how a properly drafted Retirement Plan Trust can shield a beneficiary from creditors such as a plaintiff in a predatory lawsuit, a divorcing spouse or even a bankruptcy.
12:15 – 1:15 pm Lunch and Presentation by Dunham Trust Company on NING Trusts
Session Three: 1:15 – 3:00 pmDavid M. Frees, III, J.D., Unruh, Turner, Burke & Frees“The 5 Most Powerful Secrets to Building a More Profita-ble and Less Stressful Professional Practice” and a session on “The New Age of Trust Protectors & Alternative Dispute
Clauses In Estate Planning — Preventing and Minimizing Challenges and Family Disputes” In this session, David will be sharing his top five secrets to successfully growing and sustaining a professional practice all while increas-ing personal happiness and well being. There is no need to reinvent the wheel when you can learn from Dave’s frontline achievement in business and personal life. As an extra benefit, Dave will be teaching us how to use Trust Protectors and arbitration clauses in trusts to plan for an unforeseen change in circumstance in your clients’ estate plans. Dave has had rave reviews on this national presentation he has delivered several times for NBI.
3:00 – 3:15 pm Networking Break
Session Four: 3:15 – 4:30 pm Ann Rosevear, J.D., President of Dunham Trust Company“The Freeze, Squeeze and Burn Trifecta: Note Sales to Intentionally Defective Grantor Trusts” For the client that owns one or more high value assets such as real estate, a family business or large stock accounts, setting up a note sale strategy to an Intentionally Defective Grantor Trust (IDGT) could net millions in estate tax savings. Ann will discuss the valuation discount (squeeze), the income tax burn and the estate tax freeze of this powerful strategy. Ann will also address some of the differences between Nevada and California law with respect to administration of an IDGT.
