Action button

A type of hyperlink, created from the list of shapes, that has built-in actions or links associated with it, or you can change the action that occurs when the action button is clicked.

Active cellDisplays with a dark, heavy border around the cell; it is the cell in which data may be entered, deleted, or edited.

After PreviousAllows you to set the timing of animation to dynamically start after any previous animations on the slide occur.

AlignmentThe placement of an object or text as it relates vertically or horizontally to the document.

Animated GIF

A file format used for graphic images such as clip art; in this format, images are presented in a specific order and are contained in a single file to create the illusion of animation by displaying frames of the graphic one after the other in quick succession.

Animation Any type of motion or movement that occurs.

Annotation A note or highlight that can be saved or discarded.

Area chartSimilar to a Line chart, it shows changes over time and the total value across a trend.

Autof itAn option that resizes a column to accommodate the largest entry.

AutoFormat As You Type

A feature that anticipates formatting based on what you type. There are several formatting options; each can be turned on or off independently of the others.

Banded columns

A table setting that enables you to format even columns differently from odd columns to make the table easier to read.

Banded rows A table setting that enables you to format even rows differently from odd rows to make the table easier to

Bar chartShows comparisons among individual items. In a bar chart, the X-axis (horizontal) is the value axis and the Y-axis is the category axis.

Bar of Pie chartEmphasizes one slice of the pie by representing the slice as a bar, showing how the data in the slice is further divided.

Basic Custom Slide Show

A separate presentation saved with its own title and that contains some of the slides from the original presentation.

Black slideDisplays at the end of every slide show to indicate the slide show is complete.

BoldText emphasis in which the text is darker than the surrounding text; used to emphasize key words.

Border A frame around a picture.

Brightness The perceived radiance or luminosity of an image.

BrowserA software application that interprets HTML files and displays them as Web pages; can also play embedded sound and video files, and follow hyperlinks.

Bubble chartSimilar to the X Y (scatter) chart, it compares three sets of data instead of two.

BulletA typographical symbol, such as a square or diamond, used to introduce items in a list.

Bulleted levelAn outline level designated by a bullet, which is a symbol, such as a filled circle or asterisk, used to set off an item in a list.

Bulleted listsA group of items that use bullet symbols to introduce each item in a list; used when the items in the list can be displayed in any order.

Cap style The style applied to the end of a line.

CaptionThe text that helps to identify or explain a picture or a graphic.

Category axisAlso known as the Horizontal axis (X-axis), it displays categories such as months, years, or quarters.

Category labelsText labels, identifying the categories, that are displayed along the Horizontal axis (X-axis).

CD-RRemovable media that can be written to only one time.

CD-RW Removable media that be written to multiple times.

Cell The intersection of a row and a column.

Cell addressAnother name for cell reference, it is the combination of the column letter and the row number.

Cell referenceAnother name for cell address, it is the combination of the column letter and the row number.

Change caseAllows you to change the case of selected text to all uppercase (all capital letters) or all lowercase.

Character spacing

Allows you to change the spacing between characters or letters.

ChartA graphical representation that helps you display data in a meaningful way.

Chart areaDefines the entire chart, including the Chart Title, the Category Axis, the Value Axis, the Plot Area, and the Legend.

Chart elementsThe individual items in a chart, including the Chart Area, Plot Area, Category Axis, Value Axis, Chart Title, Axis Titles, Data Labels and Legend.

Chart templateA predefined layout or format that can be used to create a chart.

Chart title The name of the chart (optional).

Chart typeDetermined by the data you want to display and the analysis applied to the data.

ChevronA symbol that indicates more information or options are available.

Clip art

A collection of predefined graphic images included with Microsoft Office or downloaded from the Web. Clip art is also available from several vendors and can be purchased as a CD-ROM collection or used on a royalty paid basis.

Clip Art task pane

Used to search for clip art either on your computer or on the Microsoft Office Web site.

Clipboard A temporary storage area that allows you to copy one or several items and then paste the item(s) into any

Office document.

Clustered Column chart

Vertical rectangles grouped together.

CollapseWhen you collapse a slide in Outline view, only the slide title displays.

Column chartBest applied when the data represents the comparison of values across categories.

Command tabDisplays the commands most relevant for a particular task area, such as inserting, designing, and animating.

Compatibility Mode

Ensures that files created in previous versions of Microsoft Office can be opened in Office 2007, and can also be saved in a format that can be used by previous versions of Office.

Compound type A line style composed of double or triple lines.

CompressTo reduce the size of the data so that when it is saved, it occupies less storage space.

Context-sensitive

A program feature, such as a help topic or a menu, that changes depending on what you are currently doing in the program.

Context-sensitive commands

Commands that change depending on the action taken.

Contiguous Adjacent or next to each other.

ContrastThe amount of difference between the light and dark extremes of color in an image.

CopyA copy, or duplicate, of the selected text that is placed on the Clipboard.

Copy and pasteThe process of duplicating an item and inserting it in new location.

Crop The process of removing unwanted areas of a picture.

Crop linesThe lines that display at the corners, sides, top, and bottom of a picture when the Crop button is clicked and that are dragged to crop a picture.

Crop toolThe tool that displays with the mouse pointer when the Crop button is clicked.

Custom Animation task pane

An area that contains a list of animation sequences for the selected text or object. From this task pane, you can add entrance, exit, and emphasis effects and motion paths; create triggers; and modify how a sound or animation will start.

Custom Slide Show

Displays only the slides you wish to display to your audience in the order you select.

Cut and pasteThe process of removing an item from its original location and inserting it in a new location.

CycleA SmartArt layout used to represent a continuing sequence of stages or events in a circular flow.

Dash type A line composed of various combinations of dashes.

Data labelsThe actual data values displayed on chart elements such as columns, markers, or slices.

Data series A set of data.

Data tableA small table below the chart that displays the actual data values.

Datasheet

A table composed of horizontal rows and vertical columns in Microsoft Graph that allows you to enter data, import data, or copy and paste data from another application to be used in your chart.

DemoteTo apply a lower or subordinate outline level. When an item is demoted, the indent of the item increases, or moves to the right.

Destination file A file into which information is pasted.

Dialog Box Launcher

A small icon that, when clicked, opens a dialog box or task pane of related options.

Document Inspector

A PowerPoint feature that reviews the presentation for hidden data or personal information that may be stored in the presentation or in the document properties.

Domain name A user friendly name that represents an IP address.

Doughnut chartSimilar to a Pie chart, it shows the relationship of parts to a whole; however, it may contain more than one set of data.

DragTo depress the left mouse button, move the mouse, and then release the mouse button.

Drag and dropTo move text by selecting the text and then dragging the selection to a new location.

EditingThe process of making changes to the contents of a presentation.

Electronic spreadsheet

Microsoft Excel 2007.

E-mail clientSoftware program that allows you to compose and send e-mail.

Embed To save a file so that it is part of the presentation.

EmbeddedA type of object that is saved with, and becomes part of, the PowerPoint file.

Emphasis effectAnimation effects that cause a font on a slide to change from normal to bold formatting or change the fill color of an object.

Entrance effectAn animation effect applied as the text or object is introduced into the slide during a slide show.

Exit effectAn animation effect applied as the text or object leaves the slide or disappears during a slide show.

ExpandWhen you expand a slide in Outline view, the outline displays.

ExplodeManually pull out a slice or slices so that it stands away from the pie for emphasis.

Exploded Pie chart

Displays all the slices disconnected, or exploded, from each other. In this type of pie chart individual slices cannot be manipulated.

Fades and Dissolves

Gradual transitions of one slide to another by means of gradual dimming or brightening of the slide.

File extension Also called the file type, it identifies the format of the 6

file or which application created it.

Fit to slideIn a photo album, selecting this option allows the picture to occupy all available space on the slide with no room for a frame or caption.

Flash driveA compact removable drive that is plugged into the USB port of the computer.

FontA set of letters, numbers, and punctuation marks with the same design, shape, and appearance.

Font faceThe specific name of the particular character set, such as Calibri or Times New Roman.

Font size The height of the text measured in points.

Footer

Information that displays at the bottom of every slide or that prints at the bottom of slide handouts or notes pages. It is possible to include footers on all slides or on individual slides.

FormatTo change the design or configuration of the text characters.

Format PainterA feature that allows you to duplicate formatting from one part of a presentation to another.

Frame The border around a picture in a photo album.

Full pathIncludes the drive, the folder, and any subfolders in which the file is contained.

Gallery A collection of available choices that may be applied.

GIFStands for Graphics Interchange Format and is a file format used for graphic images.

Gradient fillA gradual progression of several colors blending into each other, or shades of the same color blending into each other.

GraphicThe general term used to describe a drawing, clip art, or a photo.

GridlinesNonprinting dotted lines that form a grid of 1-inch squares that displays on the slide to help you size and align objects.

GroupRelated command buttons associated with the selected command tab.

HandoutsPrinted pages that display slide contents. Handouts can be set to display one, two, three, four, six, or nine slides per page.

Hard return Created by pressing the Enter key.

Header Information that prints at the top of a document.

Header rowThe top row of the table, which is formatted differently from the rows containing data.

Heading styles Built-in, predefined formatting styles.

HierarchyA SmartArt layout used to display hierarchical information or reporting relationships in an organization either horizontally or vertically.

HLDN

Stands for High Level Domain Name. This is the upper level domain, such as .com, .org, .gov. etc., to which the lower level domain belongs. Also referred to as a top level domain.

Horizontal axis (X-axis)

Also known as the Category axis, it displays categories such as months, years, or quarters.

HTMLStands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the language used to code Web pages.

HTTPStands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is the protocol used on the World Wide Web to define how messages are formatted and transmitted.

Hyperlink

A navigational element used in a document, presentation, or Web page that, when clicked, will link to, or take you to, another location. In a PowerPoint presentation, hyperlinks can also be used to link to a slide in the presentation, to a slide in a different presentation, or to a custom slide show.

Hyperlinked Custom Slide Show

A quick way to navigate to a separate slide show from within the original presentation.

HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

A language used to create Web pages that can be viewed in a Web browser.

Insertion pointIndicates, with a blinking vertical line, where text or graphics will be inserted.

IntegratedA term for a Microsoft function, meaning that the same chart tools are available in PowerPoint 2007, Excel 2007, and Word 2007.

IntegrationMicrosoft Office programs support sharing information through linked or embedded objects.

Internet A global network composed of millions of computers.

IP addressA unique set of numbers, composed of a network ID and a machine ID.

ItalicText that is characterized by a slight slanting to the right.

Join typeThe specified style when two lines connect with each other.

JPG (or JPEG)Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group; a file format used for photos and includes the .jpg or .jpeg file extension.


K

Kerning The adjustment of the space between characters.

Keywords Text that describes and can be used to locate images.

Kiosk

A booth made up of a computer and monitor that can include a touch screen, used for self-running slide shows generally located in public places such as a mall or trade show.

Landscape orientation

The page is wider than it is tall when printed, using an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch sheet of paper.

LayoutThe placement of objects on a slide by using placeholders in a specific arrangement that can be customized.

Leading See line spacing.

LegendThe text box generally located beside or below the chart that identifies the color of a column, pie slice, or marker with its data value.

Line chart Best chart type to display trends over time.

Line spacingThe distance between lines of text in a paragraph; sometimes called leading.

Line style The manner in which a line displays.

Line weightThe line measurement that is calculated in points (pt). The point size selection ranges from 1/4 pt to 6 pts.

LinkThe method of incorporating sounds into a presentation by storing sound or audio files outside the presentation.

Linked

A linked file is saved as a separate file, as opposed to embedded, and is not saved as part of the PowerPoint file. Any changes made to the data must be made in the linked file, not in PowerPoint.

ListA SmartArt layout used to display nonsequential or grouped blocks of information.

Live PreviewA technology that shows the results of applying an editing or formatting change as you move the pointer over the results presented in a gallery or list.

Local driveUsually Drive C, it is the hard drive located in the computer.

Locally On your computer.

Lock Aspect Ratio

A check box that enables you to lock the aspect ratio of a table so that when you are resizing a table, the height and width of the table change in proportion to each other.

Loop The method of playing a sound repeatedly from start

to finish until it is manually stopped.

MarkerA small indicator displayed on a line to indicate the data value.

MarkupA type of language that differs from a programming language because it uses tags instead of code.

MatrixA SmartArt layout used to show the relationship of components to a whole in quadrants.

Merge To combine two or more cells into a single cell.

Microsoft GraphA program that can be used to create charts or graphs if Microsoft Excel 2007 is not available.

Microsoft Outlook Express

Microsoft's e-mail client used with Windows XP.

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer

A program used to run a presentation on a computer that does not have the Microsoft PowerPoint application installed.

Mini toolbar

Displays when you click a slide title or bulleted item in the Slides/Outline pane. The Mini toolbar is a small toolbar containing frequently used formatting commands and is sometimes accompanied by a shortcut menu of other frequently used commands, which displays as a result of right-clicking a selection or of selecting text.

MiteredThe terms used to describe corners of a border that are angled to fit precisely.

Motion pathAn animation effect that determines how and in what direction text or objects will move on a slide.

Mouse OverAn action will occur by merely placing your mouse pointer on the Action button. It is not necessary to click.

MoveTo remove text from the current location and place it on the Clipboard.

Name BoxThe location where the cell address or cell reference displays.

Navigate To move around in a presentation.

Navigation tools

Buttons that display on the slides during a slide show that allow you to perform actions such as move to the next slide, the previous slide, the last viewed slide, or to the end of the slide show.

Network driveA common drive on another computer, usually a server, that is available to others working on the network.

Noncontiguous Nonadjacent or not next to each other.

Normal viewThe window is divided into three panes: the Slides/Outline pane, the Slide pane, and the Notes pane.

Notes Page view

The active slide displays at the top of the document, and an area for entering notes displays at the bottom of the document.

Notes pagesPrinted pages that contain the slide in the top half of the page and speaker notes in the bottom half of the page.

Notes paneDisplays below the Slide pane and allows you to type notes regarding the active slide.

Numbered lists

A group of items that use consecutive numbers or letters to introduce each item in a list; used to display a sequence of items that have definite steps, a sequence of actions, or are in chronological order.


OObject Linking and Embedding (OLE)

The program-integration technology used to share information between Office programs.

Office menuA list of document-related commands, such as Print, Save, and Open.

On ClickAllows you to set the timing of animation because the animation is triggered by the mouse click.

Outline viewA view in Microsoft Word that distinguishes the importance of data by the level of indentation.

Package for CDA feature used to copy presentations to a CD-R or CD-RW drive.

Palette A set of colors representing a range of choices.

Paragraph Any text that has a hard return at the end of it.

PasteTo insert an item from the Clipboard into a new location.

Photo album

A stylized presentation format with the following selections: 1, 2, or 4 photos on a slide. The format may include a title or caption for the photo(s) but it does not include content placeholders, which are common in other slide layouts.

Picture bulletA bullet that uses a picture, or image, for the bullet character.

Pie chart

Used to plot a single data series, a pie chart shows the relationship of parts to a whole. Values on a pie chart are displayed as percentages and cannot be negative values.

Pie of Pie chartEmphasizes one slice of the pie by representing the slice as another, smaller pie showing how the data in the slice is further divided.

PixelThe term that is short for picture element and represents a single point in a graphic image.

PlaceholderDisplays the location on a slide for text or other content.

PlatformThe combination of hardware and software used on a computer.

Plot areaDefines the area with the gridlines (if displayed) and the plotted data whether in columns, lines, slices or markers.

Point A measurement equal to 1/72 of an inch.

Portrait orientation

The page is taller than it is wide when printed, using an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch sheet of paper.

PowerPoint Help

Provides you with information and step-by-step instructions for performing tasks.

Presentation The arrangement or order of slides as presented to the 13

viewing audience.

Print PreviewEnables you to see how a presentation will look when printed using the print options that you select.

ProcessA SmartArt layout used to show a progression, sequential steps in a task, a workflow, or a timeline.

PromoteTo apply a higher, or more important, level to an item. When an item is promoted, the indent of the item decreases, or moves to the left.

Protocol A set of rules.

Publish To save a PowerPoint presentation as an HTML file.

Push and CoverTransitions that move out, or push out, the previous slide and cover it with the incoming slide.

Quick Access Toolbar

Displays buttons to perform frequently used commands with a single click. Frequently used commands in PowerPoint include Save, Undo, Repeat, and Print. For commands that you use frequently, you can customize the Quick Access Toolbar by adding additional buttons.

Radar chartShows the comparison of aggregate values of a number of data series usually relative to a center point.

RandomA type of transition that uses horizontal or vertical bars; the Random selection cycles through several different transitions each time it is applied.

RangeA group of cells either contiguous (adjacent) or noncontiguous (not adjacent) that are treated as one object.

Recoloring The application of a stylized color or hue to a picture.

Relationship

A SmartArt layout used to compare the relationship between two ideas and to display the containment, proportional, or interconnected relationships among more than two ideas.

ResolutionThe fineness of detail at which the image displays on the screen or when printed; based on the number of pixels per inch.

RGB color model

A color standard named for the three primary colors of red, green, and blue.

RibbonOrganizes commands on tabs, and then groups the commands by topic for performing related presentation tasks.

Rich Text Format (RTF)

A non-application-specific file format used to transfer formatted text documents between applications.

Rotate handleUsed to rotate, or turn, a placeholder or text box to any desired angle.

Scatter chart (XY chart)

Shows the relationship of numeric values in several data series without regard to time.

ScreenTipA small box that displays information about, or displays the name of, a screen element.

Search engineAn information retrieval system that searches a database for information matching a keyword or phrase.

ShapeReady-made objects in a recognizable form, such as arrows or rectangles.

Shortcut keyA key or a combination of keys that when pressed will perform the same action that would otherwise require several actions.

Shortcut menuA context-sensitive menu that displays commands and options relevant to the selected object.

Single File Web Page (MHT, MHTML)

A file format that saves a presentation as a single Web page and integrates all supporting information into one file.

Sizing handles Used to increase or decrease the size of an object; the small circles and squares that display at the corners and sides of a selected object or text. You drag the

handles to change the size of the object.

SliceA category in a pie chart that represents a part of the whole and shows the contribution of each value to the total.

Slide icon A small picture of the slide.

Slide master

The part of a template that stores information about the formatting and text that displays on every slide in a presentation. The stored information includes such items as the placement of text and objects or placeholders, and the size of placeholders for text and objects.

SlideThe individual page that includes any combination of text, graphics, images, video, or sound.

Slide pane Displays a large image of the active slide.

Slide showSlides display one at time and at the full height and width of the computer screen.

Slide Sorter view

Displays the slides in the presentation numbered and on one screen as a set of thumbnails.

Slides/Outline pane

Displays either the presentation outline (Outline tab) or all of the slides in the presentation in the form of miniature images called thumbnails (Slides tab).

Smart tagA button that displays, providing quick access to context-sensitive commands.

SmartArtDesigner-quality representations of information that you can create by choosing from different predefined layouts.

Source file A file from which information is copied.

Speaker notes

Consist of additional information the presenter wants to discuss but prefers not to include in the presentation. Speaker notes are typed in the Notes pane and can be printed below a picture of each slide.

Spell-checking feature

Compares the spelling of words to those in the PowerPoint dictionary. PowerPoint automatically checks spelling and indicates any misspelled or potentially misspelled words by including a wavy red line below the affected word.

Spin boxA small box with up and down arrows that enable you to move (or spin) through a set of values.

Split To create two or more cells from an existing cell.

Stacked Column Shows the relationship of individual items to the whole

Status bar

At the bottom of the presentation window, a horizontal bar that displays the current slide number, number of slides in a presentation, View menu, View options, Design Template, and Zoom slider. The status bar can be customized to include other information.

Stock chartShows the fluctuation of stock prices or other fluctuating data, such as temperatures.

StrikethroughText that displays with a horizontal line through the center of the text.

Stripes and Bars

Transitions that use horizontal and vertical blinds, checkerboard, or comb designs.

StyleSimilar to a theme in PowerPoint, it is a predefined format based on a set of colors, a set of fonts, and a set of line and fill effects that are stored as a set.

Subordinate level

A lower level of an outline.

Suffix The portion of the domain name after the dot (.).

Surface chartEnables you to find combinations between two sets of data when both the categories and values are numeric.

Synonyms Words with similar meanings.

Table A collection of rows and columns.

Table gridlines In a table, the lines between columns and rows.

TagUsed in markup languages, tags indicate descriptions such as size, color, position, and other formatting types.

Task paneA smaller window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands.

TemplateA predefined document that contains formatting information.

Text box The boundary that defines an area of text.

Text effects Formatting styles such as Shadow, Reflection, Glow,

Bevel, 3-D Rotation, and Transform.

Text paneA separate area where you can enter and edit bulleted items.

Text shadowText that displays with a shadow on the lower right of each character.

ThemeA set of coordinated design elements, such as fonts, graphics, and colors, that provide a consistent look for your presentation.

Theme colorsA set of four text and background colors, six accent colors, and two hyperlink colors.

Theme effects Sets of lines and fill effects.

Theme fontsThe default font faces associated with the theme used in the presentation, including the fonts used for headings and body text.

Thesaurus A research tool that provides a list of synonyms.

Three-dimensional (3-D)

Contains a depth axis.

Thumbnail Miniature image.

TilingPositioning that causes an image to fill the space with multiple copies of the same image.

TimelineA graphical representation that indicates, or counts, the number of seconds the animation takes to complete.

Title bar

Displays the program icon, the name of the document, and the name of the program. The Minimize, Maximize/Restore Down, and Close buttons are grouped on the right side of the title bar.

Title slideThe first slide in the presentation; frequently contains special formatting so that it is easily distinguishable.

Toggle buttonClick the button once to turn it on and click it again to turn it off.

Total rowThe last row of the table; similar to the header row, it is often formatted differently from other rows containing data.

Track The term for a song on a CD.

Transition sound

A prerecorded sound that can be applied and will play as a transition occurs.

Transition The timing of the transition-Slow, Medium, or Fast-18

UnderlineUnderlined text that has one or more horizontal lines under the text.
