In Narasimhapuram. By Preeti Srivatsan Sherly Chandran, a senior resident of Narasimhapuram, Mylapore, has been pas- sionate about garden- ing ever since she was a teenager. While growing up at Thrissur, Kerala, she would spend hours learning about fertilizers and compost from her gardener. She says, “We had banana, jackfruit and mango trees in our home. We mostly used cow dung to nourish our plants, we also had a huge compost pit to dump vegetable and fruit peel”. In 1976, after she got married, she moved to Narasimhapuram. For 12 years she stayed at an independent home there in a joint family. She says, “My father-in-law R. Rangaswami, was the make- up man for late actor Shivaji Ganesan. There wasn’t much time to take care of a garden then but I always hoped that someday I would get the opportunity to nurture my own garden”. In 1989, they moved into another independent home right opposite the one they had stayed at and Sherly got to work. She got a couple of rose plants to start off with and soon there were roses all around her home in red, white and pink. So beautiful were the roses that her home was nicknamed ‘The House of Flowers’. Today, though she doesn’t have as many roses as before, she takes pride in watching her Morning Glory, West In- dian jasmine (vritchi poo in Thamizh), Nithya malli, gundu malli and hibiscus grow. Her favourite however is her gundu malli creeper. She says, “I planted a small sapling about 6 years ago and the plant has grown so much since then. Now during the summer, I get enough flowers to make at least three mozhams (about 3 feet of stringed jasmine) everyday”. A few years ago, she started experimenting with growing different types of organic vegeta- bles. In January 2019, she planted tomatoes and a couple of months later she was pleasantly sur- prised with the yield. For the next 7 months, she did not buy toma- toes from stores. She says she often shared her produce with her neighbours and friends. Lady’s finger, brinjal, chillies, a small guava tree, than- du keerai, manathakali (wonder berry) keerai, drumstick keerai and microgreens like vendiyam, fennel and beans also grow in her garden at different times of the year. Here then is yet another example of a resident growing flowers and vegetables in a small or large patch and holding up an example that others can follow. Sherly Chandran grows a variety of flowers and vegetables in her garden. 1. The yield depends a lot on the soil mixture. Mix red sand, cowdung, neem cakes and a little bit of cocopeat, put a little water everyday and leave it for 10 days before any sapling or seed is planted. The neem cake will kill all the insects in the soil. 2. Jasmine needs to be watered everyday only when it is a sapling. When it grows a little bit, it doesn’t need much water. The more the sunlight the better. 3. Cooked rice acts as a good manure as well as a pesti- cide. Keep it in a bottle or container for about 10 days and allow it to ferment. Keep shaking the bottle everyday. After 10 days, dilute it with water in the ratio of 1:4 and spray as a pesticide. The rice can be added to the soil at the base of the plant, it is a very good fertilizer. 4. Mix sour buttermilk with water in the ratio of 1:10, filter and spray on your plants. It is a very good fertilizer. Chillies grow very well with this mixture. 5. Take banana and onion peels, add garlic and water and boil it. Dilute it in the ratio of 1:5 and use that water on your jasmine and tomato plants for a good yield. 6. Groundnut cakes left behind after the oil is extracted should be fermented for a few days, mixed with water, diluted to the ratio 1:5 and sprayed on flowering plants to see good results. 7. Mix 1/4 glass of milk with 5 cups of water, that is a really good fertilizer. 8. Don’t use sugar or salt on plants. Nattu sakkarai (jaggery powder made from unrefined sugar) however is good for plants. A garden enthusiast’s journey. In Narasimhapuram.

    V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

Revathy is now in Class 11. Her father works as a sub-staff in a private office. The office was closed for three months during the lockdown and the man hardly got paid. Thankfully, the office has reopened and the man is back to work and gets his salary. Some 12,000 rupees. Revathy’s mother is a housewife. This family resides in Abhiramapuram. Revathy was not sure how she would pay her school fees; there wasn’t enough money around.

Ezhilarasi has recently been promoted to Class 11. Her father passed away three years ago and the mother, a maid used to earn about Rs.10,000 a month. But she did not have a job for the past 4 months when families who had employed her asked her not to come due to the pandemic. Now, some of her employers have called her back to work. With hardly any savings, Ezhilarasi was not sure how she would pay her school fees of some 8000-plus rupees.

Sudharani is now in Class 11. Her father passed away in 2014. Her mother had a housekeeping job but she lost her job due to the pandemic lockdown and the family did not earn any-thing for months. She recently got a job which pays Rs. 6000 a month. But with no savings, Sudharani had not paid her school fees.

Revathy, Ezhilarasi and Sudharani are now less worried. They received grants from the Mylapore Times Charitable Trust (MTCT) the past weeks and are focussed on their online classes.

This year, 44 students from eight schools located in the Mylapore neighborhood received monetary support from the Trust. And the total amount that was granted stands at Rs.4,00,750. This is probably the highest amount that the Trust has given as part of its annual exercise. Obviously, the need was greater in extraordinary times when we are still grappling the pandemic.

The Trust, in operation for over two decades now launched this particular exercise when heads of some schools sought mon-etary help for poor students who did well in their academics. Students who needed help to gain admission to college.

So, through appeals put out in the Mylapore Times, the Trust managed to get a decent sum of donations that helped award a good number of students of Mylapore schools. The newspaper sets apart a good sum of money from its annual profit as donation to the Trust. And this has helped serve a larger community of young people.

This year, the donations were thin. Just about Rs.40,000. So we dipped into the reserves of the Trust to help young people whose families were in distress. Families battered by the effects of the pandemic situation.

I want to thank all the donors of this season. Every donation helped. And we at Mylapore Times are glad that despite the dark days the newspaper is experiencing for many months now, the Trust we support could still give more than we normally have.

Saibaba Temple re-opens:limited hours, regulations in place

The popular Saibaba Temple on Venkatesa Agraharam Street in Mylapore has re-opened now. But all guests and visitors have to follow the regulations strictly.

People have to sanitise their hands and get body temperatures checked to gain entry; temple volunteers ensure people keep a distance inside the temple premises

and are allowed to stay and pray only for a short while.

Nobody is allowed to sit or stand in the hall and pray or meditate for long.

People who accept the prasadam are asked to partake of it outside.

The temple, for now is open for limited hours in the forenoon and evenings. Timings ; 7 to 10 a.m., 3 to 6 p.m. only.

The central government recently announced that stu-dents from classes IX to XII would be allowed to visit schools to take guidance from their teachers’ with parents’ consent.

At schools in the Mylapore area, while some of them are ready to reopen anytime, others plan to wait for more information from the state government.

At Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Higher Secondary School, Mylapore, the prin-cipal G. Pandian says, “As of now we are not sure about what we need to

do. We are waiting for further instruc-tions from the state government in this regard”.

The principal of P. S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, Revathi Parameswaran, says, “The Corporation has sanitized the premises thrice for us, we also did so be-fore the NEET exam. We have the hand sanitizing machines and thermometers ready.

“If and when the state government asks us to reopen, we will adhere to the rules put down by the government. We will ensure that social distancing is followed”.

Are schools ready to open up their campuses for high school students?

A civic worker managing virus containment in the neighbourhood says that nowadays, virus clus-ters are reported increasingly among close contacts of a virus-positive person.

Said a civic worker attached to Ward 124, “These days, virus clusters are reported mostly among close contacts of a positive person.”

“As people are mostly homebound, the virus tends to spread quickly among family members of a virus-positive person.” For instance, a few days ago, 11 cases were reported from Ward 124. Of the 11 cases, she says, 8 were reported from a single household at Madhavaperumal Koil Street and three were reported from one household in Pitchu Pillai Street.

Says the civic worker, “At Madhavaperumal Koil Street, one man, working in IT company first tested positive. He got the virus from his colleague, who was positive. Following this, 8 of his family members (close contacts) got the virus.” Similarly, at Pitchu Pillai Street, she says, one man tested positive after he returned from his native village. “Soon, two members of his family also got the virus.”

Earlier, at Ward 173 too virus clusters were reported at Govin-daswamy Nagar slum, Narayanaswamy Thottam and KVB Gardens in R.A.Puram, among family members of a few households, after one member of their family turned virus-positive.

Police ask Marina visitors to vacate sands, warn of fines for violating pandemic time rules

The Marina draws people all the time but it is ‘no-go’ zone since the pandemic broke out in March.

But since the regulations were eased, many people who want to be out in the open have been heading to the Marina - to spots where the police patrols are not around.

But on weekends, this crowd has become big and police have had to intervene.

So police had to persuade people who were enjoying themselves on the beachside, south of the Light House to leave the place

since the pandemic rules do not allow for large gatherings in such open, public places.

Policemen and women of the Marina Beach and the Pattinappakam police sta-tions were involved in this exercise.

Lots of people had head-ed here since early evening last weekend; singles, cou-ples, families and friends. Some were enjoying a dip in the seawater while others sat on the sands opposite the rows of colonies starting from Nochi kuppam end.

The stretch of the beach from Light House to Anna

samadhi has been barricaded and under the eye of the police since late March.

Police say they will start fining violators soon.

The open-air fish hawkers market on the Marina Loop Road has been open since regulations were eased.

It is busy mornings and late evenings, and crowded on weekends.

Cadres of the DMK party in R. A. Puram remembered C. N. Anna-durai, founder of the party on his birth anniversary that falls on Sept.15.

A small group of them set up Annadurai’s portrait at the base of a DMK flagpole on St. Mary’s Road and adorned it with fresh flowers. Similar events took place in a few other areas in the Mylapore neighbourhood.

Besides founding and then leading the DMK party, Annadurai was a powerful orator and popular writer and was instrumental in changing the name of the state from Madras to Tamil Nadu.

It was the anti-Hindi agitation that the Anna-led DMK held rather strongly that led to the party’s victory in elections to the state Assembly.in 1967.

For the past few months, Chennai Corporation has been holding regular fever camps in the neighbourhood, to prevent virus spread.

Now, civic workers say the number of people attend-ing these camps has come down.

Says a civic worker attached to a local Ward, “Every day, we are holding camps at two streets in our Ward. One is held between 8.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and another one is held from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.”

“But, only 30 to 35 (approx.) residents are attending the camps. The number used to be close to 160, a few months ago.”

When asked why this is happening, she says, “As we hold a camp at the same street once every week or fortnight, people who tested say last week, are unwilling to attend camp, this week. Also, as Covid workers check their temperatures daily, residents say they don’t see the need to again check themselves at fever camps.”

However, she says, residents who have virus symp-toms voluntarily drop-in. “Covid workers (sector work-ers) too continue to check people for virus symptoms and ILI (Influenza-like Illness) cases during their door to door survey.” Another civic staff who organises fever camps also echoes similar views.

She says, “Generally, we hold a camp at a street where virus cases have been reported the previous day. Now, in some cases, relatives of virus-positive person or neighbours themselves are unwilling to attend camps. We then spread awareness and persuade them to test.”

Few other residents, especially senior citizens, she says, are unable to attend camps as they find the camp location far from their houses.

“In such cases, we send mobile vans and collect nasal/ throat swabs from their doorstep. We also ask people to visit swab collection centre at Chennai Cor-poration’s AIDS prevention and Control society near Thiruvalluvar statue off R.H. Road for sample collection.”

Although the state government al-lowed shops to operate till 8 pm and lifted complete lockdown on Sundays, managers/ owners of most of the small retail shops in Mylapore’s Luz zone say that neither of this has helped to im-prove their business.

In fact, some of them say that busi-ness has gone down post-September.

Says a staff at the popular clothing store, Gani, in Luz, “We have not seen any improvement in business post the relaxations this month. If anything, cus-tomers have reduced compared to past few months.

“Earlier, as we closed by 7 pm, people rushed to shop early. Now, with the busi-ness hours extended by an hour, which is way past most people’s work timings, they seem to have got the mindset that they can go shopping a little late. So peo-ple come in just before the closing time. But overall sales are dull,” he adds.

The manager of Butterfly Galleria store, that sells a range of kitchen appli-ances on Luz Church Road too says that business is lean now. “Hardly one or two customers are dropping in, since this past week,” he says.

Says Girish, manager of the well

known Rex Fashions here, “Not many customers are visiting our shop even on Sundays. We hope shopping will get go-ing in the following weeks.”

The man in-charge of VKC Pride foot-wear shop on this road too said business was low, these days.

However, the hawkers on this stretch, who sell items ranging from footwear and mobile accessories to clothes for men and women have a different story to tell.

Says a hawker, who sells clothes (kur-tis, dresses) for women, “We are having good sales since lockdown relaxation in September. The crowd is big on week-ends especially on Saturdays.”

Another hawker, who sells men’s foot-wear, says “Since the March lockdown, we suffered due to poor sales. Now, I’m happy that my business is improving. Several people are buying stuff from me.”

Staff at the popular Sukha Nivas restaurant in the area also said that they are receiving a steady stream of diners after rules were relaxed.

Though shops have taken precautions to prevent virus spread, many people who were shopping from pavement shops of this area had not worn the masks properly. And some were seen without masks. Social distancing too was not maintained by most of them.
