Mystery: A Problem to Solve

All mysteries have certain elements: A Problem to be solved A Realistic Setting A Main Character who solves the

mystery

Edgar Allan Poe’sCriteria for a Mystery

Based on analysis and rational thought

Reach a solution by a step-by-step recreation of the crime

Focus the reader’s attention on how the crime was committed and not on the crime or the suspects in the case

Mystery’s Five W’s

WHO had the opportunity to commit the crime?

WHEN and WHERE did the crime occur?

WHAT clues were found?WHY was the crime committed?

(motive)HOW was the crime committed?

Characters

Characters in a mystery must behave like real people although there may be stereotypes.

Main Characters must be fully developed and well-rounded.

The Setting has to be Realistic, and consequently,

Mysteries are a sub-genre of realistic fiction.

Plot

Detective stories depend on a strong plot and often contain subplots that heighten suspense.

The major events are sequenced in a specific and logical order so that the story makes sense.

Clues and Distractions

Clues – The author drops hints which we call evidence, and consequently the reader might be able to solve the mystery.

Distractions – The author purposely adds elements to the stories to distract the reader from the solution. These are called Red Herrings.

Conclusion

The story must have a credible, realistic end to the story.

Denouement – (day-noo-man) - the solution of a plot in a mystery, usually reviewed by the detective at the end of the story
