FIREHOUSE TO HOLD AUDITIONSNEWBURYPORT | The Firehouse Cen-

ter for the Arts has announced that audi-tions will be held at the Dance Place in MillBuilding #1 at the Tannery, located at 50Water Street in downtown Newburyport.

This audition, which will be for the hol-iday performance of “Nutbuster,” will takeplace on Saturday, September 16 at 11 a.m.The show is a modern rendition of “TheNutcracker,” with music to be performedby E.J. Ouellette.

“Nutbuster” will be presented by ExitDance Theatre and the Firehouse Centerfor the Arts the weekend of December 1-3.

The auditions will be held for elemen-tary school age and up. No experience nec-essary, just a desire to perform movementtheater with limited text. Children shouldwear comfortable clothes, and no shoes areneeded.

SEACOAST | Some ofNew Hampshire’s librariesare getting a very welcometech boost this fall. In fact, anumber of them are locatedright here in the Seacoastarea.

Public libraries in Dover,Lee, Madbury, Newmarketand Portsmouth are amonga list of 42 libraries aroundthe state which havereceived monies totaling$27,600 through the Bill andMelinda Gates Staying Con-nected Technical SupportGrant.

Administered by theNew Hampshire StateLibrary, the Gates grantassists in providing basic aswell as advanced technicalassistance and support forpublic library staff.

Grant funding alsoassures improvement inpublic access computing,and the sustainability ofnew technology.

According to the NHState Library in Concord,the grant “provides funds tosupport many areas of tech-nical support.” Thisincludes the writing of tech-nology and financial plans;designing and implement-ing networks; contractingwith technical support andtechnology vendors.

Configuring patronauthentication for the NHDownloadable Audio Bookprogram is also supportedby the monies providedthrough the Gates StayingConnected Technical Sup-port Grant.

At the Dover PublicLibrary, Director CathyBeaudoin says the $600 theyreceived in Gates grantmoney will be used to helpset up downloadable audiobooks through the library’s

“It provides all the tech-nological help [needed] forgetting us connected,” sheexplains.

Beaudoin adds that as ofTuesday of this week, library

patrons are now able todownload three audio booksat a time, free of charge,from a list of approximately800 titles obtained throughthe vendor, OverDriveAudio Book Suppliers.

“It’s going to be fun,”Beaudoin predicts. “We (thelibrary staff) have been prac-ticing downloading.” Sheadds that the extensive booklist includes “best sellers,‘hot off the press’ [books],

popular things that peoplewill want to listen to now.It’s very good.”

That’s a sentiment morethan likely shared by thestate’s libraries who are ben-efiting from the grant.

“We greatly appreciatethe assistance the Gatesgrant supplies to NewHampshire libraries,” saysState Librarian MichaelYork. “Their support hasmade a real difference.”
