As our state and Conference enter into Phase 2, I want to let you know that we have organized a COVID-19 Response Team. The team is Chaired by Kevin Neal, chair of the Trustees. Members are Mike Hinshaw, Mike Harrison, Barbara Laymon, Patsy Brewer, Don Bowles, Mike Deal, Charloe Miller, Russell Suggs, Natalie Gray, Lou Wilson, Tommy Dunn and Glenn Myers. The Team met on May 21 to get organized. The group has been reviewing informaon from a variety of sources including govern- ment officials, the CDC, the Annual Conference, Church Mutual, our insurance company, and the Annual Conference Chancellor (legal advisor). The Team wants to ensure the safety of all of our staff, members and guests and plans to follow the strictest requirements of the Western NC Conference and state government. As soon as prudent and we have a plan in place, we want to re-open worship and then other ministries and small groups will follow. As the summer months approach, online worship will connue for the foreseeable future. Tradionally, the summer months at FUMC take on a more casual approach to worship so we plan to reflect that in our services. I am amazed by the number of people who tune into our online services. We are averaging 463 views on Facebook which could be 2 or more people watching together. Our service is also available on YouTube, our website and on WDSL 96.5 radio at 5pm on Sundays and on their app (which has had listeners in TN and FL). We are grateful to Glen Stanley and Total Realty for providing the radio broadcast. Our church office remains closed, but staff do spend some me working in their offices as well as at home. Please contact any of us as needed. Our phone numbers are listed on the church website. We are taking advantage of the situaon to do a deep cleaning of ALL buildings and worship spaces over the summer. The new hand- icapped accessible bathroom off the sanctuary is expected to be finished in the next 2-3 weeks. We connue to stay connected by our Cast Me Not ministry and Stephen Ministry. I encourage you to reach out to others by phone, card, text or e-mail as the Lord brings people to mind. The final pass-by parade will be on Wednesday, June 3. May 24 marked our 11th week on Facebook Live. This is not a “normal” that any of us want to experience. We are continuing to deal with it in our own unique ways. It is a time of stress, anxiety, fear, depression, anger and a host of other emotions. For some it is a slower pace offering more time for rest. For some it is a time of extreme financial loss. Many essential workers find themselves ex-hausted. People are sick and dying. I would remind us that Jesus said He would build His Church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. The Church has suffered much worse in its long history. This is our time to bend the knee and confess Jesus Christ is Lord. He is still on the throne, the Sovereign Lord of all. Let us use this time to seek Him with all our hearts to see what He is seeking to teach us and grow in trust of Him. This is great news, from A.R.K. and the Evangelism Committee! We have modified the

winter Blessing Bags so that we can present them for the spring and summer. We have

taken out the gloves, and put in three new snacks, lip balm, and sunscreen! The WHEN

Ministry generously financed $5 McDonald’s gift cards for each bag, also! Thank you,

WHEN Ministry! There is no need to add anything else to the bags, unless you think you

really need to. We are trying to cut down on contact with the items and bags because of

COVID-19. This is a wonderful and much-needed outreach; especially during these chal-

lenging times. I was talking with someone, the other day about our Blessing Bags pro-

gram. The person asked me, “Who do you give those to?” I explained that we give them

to the homeless and needy. He replied, “How do you know if the person receiving the

bag really needs it?” I told him that our commission is to do this for “the least of these.”

We are doing what He instructed us to do. What comes next is not really up to us. Also,

we do not know which ones of the recipients may actually be “angels unaware” receiv-

ing these gifts, and blessing us in our giving. As it says in Hebrews 13:2: “Be not forgetful

to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Christian

Standard Bible. Regardless, in any case…I think it’s worth the risk! We have filled a lim-

ited number of bags, so we are asking each family to only take one, for now. You can

find the Blessing Bags each Tuesday and Thursday, from 10:00 to 3:00, outside the FLC,

in the wagon, near the picnic table! Stay safe and healthy!

This beautiful scripture is on the front wall of the choir room, but sadly, no one is there to read it each week. The good news is that those of us that love music and love singing, also have this written on our hearts. It is a very strange time in the life of our church, and the news changes daily about how we should proceed. But the news about singing is very sad and has not

changed. At this point in time, based on the science of COVID-19 as it is un-derstood by scientists, singing is not a safe activi-ty in a group setting.

So where do we go from here? How do we continue sharing God’s love through music as we patiently wait for a vaccine or treatment? Those of you that know me well already know my answer: we con-tinue to sing! We just make it look a little differ-ent. We sing at home with our families. We can sing on Zoom meetings, even though we can’t hear each other. We sing during our worship services on Face-Book, YouTube, our church website and WDSL radio. And as John Wesley

reminded us, “sing lustily and with a good cour-age...lift your voice up with strength.” And above all he tells us to “Sing Spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing Him more than yourself or any other creature.” And that, my friends, is how we con-tinue. We use our voice to please God more than any other creature. So tell your family to be prepared for whatever sound you may send forth, because God wants to hear you sing!

CHILDCARE MINISTRY Congratulations graduates! To our preschool class of 2020, our kindergarten, 5th grade, 8th grade, high school and college gradu-ates...Oh the places you’ll go! May the Lord be with you as you move on to your next adventure. Our preschool graduates for the 2019-2020 school year were recognized in a drive thru end of year celebration/graduation ceremony on May 21,2020 and while it wasn’t exactly what we had in mind for what that day would have traditionally held, it was a beautiful morning celebrating our preschoolers as God’s blessings rained down. Our graduates this year were: Allie Myers, Attikus Mezic, Ayla Justice, Bristol Collier, Chase Whitaker, Chloe Sparks, Eli Markland, Emersyn Stokes, Finn Hall, Gregory Giles, Harper Correll, Hayden Veach, Jayden Monteleone, Katelynn Hare, Liam Ward, McKinley Waterson, Millie Maurer, Raegan Fisher, Rylan Gregory, Samuel Tew and Saxton Brooks. As we near summer, you may be wondering about Build Up! Summer Day Camp 2020. While it is with mixed emotions we an-nounce we are not having camp this summer, I want to invite YOU to Build Up! Build up your friends! Build up your family! Build up your Faith! This was our theme for 2020 and while our plans are on hold, we encourage you to stop and think of ways you can build up others and your faith! We are taking summer camp to the streets and moving into our mission field- the walls outside our building to BUILD UP this summer! We look forward to a safe fall re-opening of preschool and after school care and hope to have some details later this summer for how that will look! Allison Gupton

Join Lou Wilson and Tommy Dunn on Facebook or YouTube on Sunday, June 14 at 7:00 PM for a time of singing comfort hymns. This broadcast will be pre-recorded and then available at 7:00 PM on FaceBook or YouTube on June 14 and any time going forward.
