Button batteries are small round silver batteries that look like coins to

small children. They pose a serious choking hazard because of their size,

which makes them easy for kids to put in their mouths and accidentally

swallow, or to push them into their ears or nose. If a battery is swallowed or

put up the nose, it can cause severe burns or death. Read all the

information below and share with others to help keep children safe.

Check items Button batteries are found in common household

items including: children’s toys flashing novelties (e.g flameless candles)

remote controls thermometers, car key, watches, calculators, scales,

musical greeting cards, glucometers, hearing aids, reading lights cameras.

Make sure the battery compartments are secure. Buy safe products.  Only

buy products that either: require a screwdriver to open the battery

compartment, secured with a child-resistant locking mechanism require

two independent and simultaneous movements to access the batteries.

Button battery products should be robust enough to be dropped without

breaking.  Keep out of reach.   Store spare button batteries in a cupboard

out of children’s reach and dispose of used button batteries immediately.

Flat batteries can still be dangerous because they contain enough charge to

generate an electrical current once ingested. Seek immediate medical

attention. If you suspect your child has swallowed or inserted a button

battery, contact the Poisons Information Helpline immediately on 13 11

26.  If this is not possible go straight to the hospital emergency room.  Do

not let the child eat or drink and do not induce vomiting.  It takes as little as

two hours to cause severe burns once a button battery has been ingested

and remains lodged in the body so you need to take immediate action.

There may be no symptoms, but look out for: coughing or noisy breathing

chest pain or grunting drooling or vomiting bleeding or

discharge unexplained food refusal or fever or vomiting nose bleeds—

sometimes this can be blood vomited through the nose bleeding from the

gut—black or red vomits or bowel motions.  Tell family and

friends about button battery safety, including prevention, recognising

symptoms and taking action. Button batteries must be kept out of reach at

all times.  Report products that use unsecured button batteries to the

ACCC.  Find a list of recalled button battery products from Product Safety

Australia.

Our Year 12 students attended the Flinders Shire Council meeting today and introduced themselves to our current Mayor,Councillors and staff.  Throughout the year, each month two Seniors will attend each Council meeting and give a report on what ishappening or what they would like to see happen and at the same time report back to students.  They were intrigued by theformalities of how the Council meetings are run and the processes that must be adhered to.  They learnt that agenda items arediscussed in the Monday’s meeting and in the Tuesday’s meeting they move and second each of these items.  Some of the items onthe table were the new and higher two lane Alderley bridge that will be constructed, the new water reservoir about to beconstructed as a backup for the current town water tower, the capping of the bores and the water that is saved by doing this, theFlinders Shire Council Drug & Alcohol Education program and the Cards 4 All program which will be available soon for allresidents over 18 years of age. Our Seniors each introduced themselves and spoke a bit about their interests and their leadership roles.  Mayor Jane then ledsome discussion about the Hughenden Recreation Lake and what their thoughts were about the Lake.  The Mayor then explainedthe reasons for the inflatable jumping castle being removed, swimmers jumping off the jetty and the depth and dangers in thewater.  The discussion then led to the vandalism occurring at the Lake and our Year 12’s were asked to speak about this to theirpeers, friends and family to explain that cameras are being installed so that the vandals can be identified.  Our Senior studentswill also be reminding students that dogs are not allowed in the play area and that they must be on a leash at all times. Today’s meeting was very informative for our Seniors and was a great way to start their Flinders Shire Council visits for 2020!

YLEAD WORKSHOPSThe yLead team were in our school last week from Monday, February 10 until Wednesday, February 12. Following theSchool Induction Ceremony, Amy and Matt, worked with our School Captains, Leaders and House Captains to focus on theirleadership roles. This then led onto working with students from Year 5 through to Year 12 with the main focus beingleadership and resilience! Students learnt through various activities that leadership is about more than being a captain andmore than just about a badge. It’s about all the little things you do each day, with or without a badge, to care for theenvironment and people around you. Leadership is about being active and the importance of trying new things, and workingtogether, not everything is a competition. Students talked about their strengths and looked at how these strengths can makeyou good team leaders. Students learnt they need to not just be aware of their strengths, but also to actively use them tosupport those around them. Break big goals into small goals and stay focussed. Always have respect and accept others forwho they are!
